where do you place your blusher?

For years, we've been told to 'smile' and put it on the 'apples' of our cheeks.
Yet, looking at photos of 'certain women' (thinking Princess of Wales, various other high profile women) they appear to put it halfway down the sides of their cheeks more like contouring and their upper cheeks are pale (highlighted?)

Is this a face-shape thing (some faces suit different placement) or is it black and white?

I do it really high up almost under my eye towards the outer edges. Probably where a lot of people put highlighter at a guess. I would add highlighter on top of my blush if going for a more glam look.

I used to put blush on the apples of my cheeks when I smile but as soon as I stop smiling it drags down and makes my face look sunken.

I put it at angle across my cheek bones and always have. Apples of cheeks doesn't work for me as when I'm not smiling it makes me look "dragged down" and weirdly tired.

Housewife2010 · 04/12/2023 11:44

I've never really seen the point of smiling to find the apples of your cheeks. You can see and feel them. (Same with the sucking in to find the holows - you can feel them) . Wayne Goss demonstrated that when you smile and and apply it, it's lower when you relax your face.

On the underside of my cheekbones

I used to do the apple thing. And it stopped working and I couldn't 'work it out and then I watched an insta video where an older lady make up artist pointed out that gravity is not my friend anymore! Grin. Now I tend to put it much higher up on my cheekbones and yes, probably where highlighter would go and does go sometimes too.

Bronzer I tend to do below as a sort of cheat contour for quick coverage.

You are supposed to put blusher a little higher up as the face matures. I was told a little technique for over-50s blusher:

Make a L-shape with your thumb and first finger. Place your thumb alongside your nostril so it's horizontal (and your first finger is pointing vertically upwards). You then apply your blusher right in the corner between finger and thumb, and blend it upwards/outwards.

I do it like the first pic pp shared but I know it’s wrong in todays fashion and should be like the last. It just doesn’t suit me

KirstenBlest · 04/12/2023 13:47

@SpottyCrumpet , that's where the contouring product goes not blusher

SpottyCrumpet · 04/12/2023 14:06

Sorry I didn’t explain it well. It was more the shape it was showing there, the younger generation are placing it more where the highlighter goes!

TheOGCCL · 04/12/2023 14:30

I'm doing what @CointreauVersial said. Apples are far too low for me these days.

KirstenBlest · 04/12/2023 14:32

I'd need a picture

Wendyspotatopeeler · 04/12/2023 15:46

Like the classic picture above, across the cheek bone.

ChristmasBaublesandMore · 04/12/2023 16:15

I was tending to do Rosy Glow (from the diagram) with a bit of Classic as well.

This is 100% the advice I take. I don't put it too low on my face.

heyhohello · 05/12/2023 22:07

As I've got older, right on top of my cheekbones and brushed back towards ears (which is slightly higher than apples of cheeks). I blend well and make sure it's not too stripe like though. I don't bother with highlighter and contour makes me look like Skeletor!

BIossomtoes · 05/12/2023 22:48

On my cheekbones and towards my temples now. It doesn’t work lower down on my aging face.

hexsnidgett · 05/12/2023 22:54

I put it on, realise it looks weird and then wash it off. I just can't get along with it.
