Size 6 trousers with 28.5 waist?

ViolaCello · 27/11/2023 19:47

Is this possible? It's at Me&Em.
I am after some cords and the fit guide says this, and yet the model wears the UK8.
Not sure how, since I imagine it would drown her.

Am I missing something, or are most brands just playing with the fairies at this point?

Well, it was very Guardian...
I think it might have been sizing having gone from chest/leg to S/M/L. A few complaints about oversizing, too.The majority claimed that they were still wearing clothes that were over 30 years old, or something they'd cobbled together from the coal shed, so make of that what you will Grin

Friendly local tailors/dressmakers. Give them some business.

I did notice that when sizes are added to a clothing line they tend to go lower rather than higher. This would appear to suggest vanity sizing, but who knows at this point!

Well yes, this brand now would need to go down to a 2 to allow actual size 6 women to buy something that fits (without a thick jumper tucked in).

Devilsmommy · 28/11/2023 20:44

@ViolaCello Ive only just seen your thread. I wear a size 6 myself, UK, and I've got a 29" waist. I think though that alot of places now have completely different size guides so always better to go to an actual shop and try on

heyhohello · 28/11/2023 20:53

Where do you shop @Devilsmommy? I've a 25/26 inch waist 35 inch hip and I wear an 8 most often sometimes a 10 in M&S if fitted on the waist. This is in accordance with M&S size guide.

Pipistrellus · 28/11/2023 20:55

I'm a 6 in trousers and these would be much too big. I wear a 25/30 in accurately sized jeans.

Devilsmommy · 28/11/2023 21:12

@heyhohello well I'm the same as you in that I've got 35" hips and I get mine mostly from Tesco and shein nowadays though also EMP online as long as I get the 26" waist as the 28 is huge and I find that the 8's in most shops completely swamp me.

heyhohello · 28/11/2023 21:22

Interesting @Devilsmommy. Maybe I just don't like tighter clothes. I do make use of belts quite a bit. 😁

heyhohello · 28/11/2023 21:24

Also I find 6s quite hard to find plus my bust is 35inches so a size 6 dress wouldn't fit, I don't think.

Most size guides have me as an 8 or 10.

Devilsmommy · 28/11/2023 21:26

@heyhohello 😆 I can't wear belts because the buckles always give me a rash. I think the style of trousers changes things too. I'm 5ft 7" and only really wear low waist jeans, can't stand a waistband round my middle, I'd constantly be trying to shove it down🤣

heyhohello · 28/11/2023 21:31

5 foot 7 too @Devilsmommy! I do like a high waist though. My favourite belt of the moment is an elastic woven one with leather ends and a buckle. Buckles don't give me rashes but they don't rest on my skin just on the garment. I don't like low waists as they tend to ride down or dig into my stomach if they are tight.

heyhohello · 28/11/2023 21:33

Was thinking with a low rise garment the waist size is less applicable to standard sizing. Because standard sizing measures at the waist which the garment doesn't sit on. So as long as your hips are narrow it doesn't matter if your waist is bigger than the size standard.

Devilsmommy · 28/11/2023 21:35

@heyhohello I know many people on MN are completely against Shein but they've got some really great quality jeans in size 6 and it sounds like you're the same size/shape as me so It's definitely worth a look.

determinedtomakethiswork · 28/11/2023 21:36

Jeans in the 70s used to be 28 inches equalled a size 10, 30 inches equalled a size 12. I remember those days! And there was no elastic in the denim either.

heyhohello · 28/11/2023 21:44

@Devilsmommy definitely very similar size and shape. I just can't imagine ordering a 6 though. But maybe that's because I tend to order high waisted and my 26 inch waist might feel pinched in a 6 when an 8 usually fits or sometimes a 10. My last jeans were M&S, high waisted wide leg, this year. But maybe Shein is bigger. I'd have to investigate.

Devilsmommy · 28/11/2023 21:47

@heyhohello shein is definitely bigger, 26 waist is Definitely a 6 there😁

heyhohello · 28/11/2023 21:56

Interesting you expect the cheaper clothing companies to have smaller sizes in order to cater for younger customers.

Younger people do tend to be slimmer. Once upon a time, that's why stores aimed at young people came up smaller than those for middle aged people, although what's happening now is anyone's bloody guess.

ViolaCello · 29/11/2023 12:18

@heyhohello I am similar but always wear size 10 trousers. I measure for an 8 but never feel comfy in them, might be cos I have a high set hip. I really love those me&em trousers but feel too confused to risk spending.

I have noticed lots of brands aimed at my age range size me out, but it has been improving. M&S used to be terrible, even a 6 in there was loose. I must be a young size with a middle aged body Grin

Problem with places like Shein is that I don't like them. I can always find a fabulous fit in Primark too but the quality kind of steals the point.

You can get smaller-fitting trousers from Zara, though I do have XS, S and M from them that are all the same waist size so it's not a guaranteed fit by any means. The XS are jeans and the M are wide-leg trousers, for info.

porridgeisbae · 29/11/2023 12:38

Even if they were an elasticated waist, I imagine they would be uncomfortable with your waist size if they call themselves 6.

But I suppose there are brands where the sizing is really large compared to the number. I had a White Stuff skirt that was like that, for instance, and I imagine there are some other brands that are the same.

I don't know about the 1970s but jeans in the 1980s and 1990s were all sorts of weird sizes. I was never more than 26" waist and a size 10 but remember buying 32/32 Levis. I bought 32/32 recently from Boden as a size 14.

Theresit · 29/11/2023 19:56

Some retailers like Woolovers give the actual garment measurements which is great. I’m a M with some styles and a L with others.

Theresit · 29/11/2023 19:57

I also think waist sizes have thickened in the last 50 years as a result of a high carb western diet.

The rise in obesity is as simple as it is complicated. I don't think it's a complete coincidence that it's followed an era of intense pressure to be extremely thin.
