Please help me find some clothes!

Since turning 40, I'm finding clothes a nightmare. I have two issues. The first is that I'm really skinny up top (size 6 with zero bust), but in the last two years have developed a paunch/belly (always used to be flat - most irritating now it sticks out more than my chest!). This means most dresses look crap unless they're shift dresses, and it's so hard to find any that don't swamp me.

The second issue is that I can't stand having anything even vaguely tight around my waist. For some strange reason it causes massive bloating. Also highly irritating, particularly given the fashion for high waisted stuff. I was able to get by with low rise stuff before, and I used to live in Gap's super soft low rise jeggings, but they're all threadbare now and Hollister (which kept me going for the last 2 years) have stopped doing them too (apart from awful ripped ones). Would be willing to try bootcut jeans as used to love these when I was younger, but do low rise ones exist?

I basically live in leggings or joggers, and have a couple of dresses for work. But when it comes to the weekend and going out, I have no idea what to wear.

The summer is ok as I get by with elasticated waist band skirts and t shirts. But would so like to have some smart bottoms to wear for the winter. Just don't know where to turn!

I'm 5'5 and about 8 stone, so a bit puny and can't pull off a lot of styles.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

I love not all but a lot of primark winter clothes at the moment.

Have you had medical oversight of your swollen middle, @Falcon1?

Falcon1 · 13/11/2023 08:52

@ProperDeep I have seen the GP yes. They ruled out ovarian cancer and weren't interested after that.

Thanks for the suggestions @Copperoliverbear and @xmasdealhunter

Ok.

Can’t help with the jeans thing - but think anyway you might be better off with dresses. Specifically quite boxy cuts with wide-ish shoulders and sleeves and pockets on the chest. Thus balancing your upper and lower halves.

I’m thinking this sort of shape:

Or a fashionably voluminous shacket to wear over a narrow ankle length silk / sequin skirt?

I'm several sizes bigger than you, OP, but I have the same thing with my middle. I tend to wear straight, slightly flared or cocoon style dresses just above my knee - so sweater dresses, shirt dresses with no belt etc with leggings or tights. For some reason tights are quite comfortable but I wear knitted ones rather than the type that hold you in .

KirstenBlest · 13/11/2023 11:17

Cocoon dresses and shirt dresses, pinafores, dungarees.
Yoga pants. Jeans, jeggings, joggers or combats with elastic/drawstring waist.

vestedinterests · 13/11/2023 11:27

What about dungarees? I have quite a few from Lucy & Yak and rate them highly.

If you can get hold of oasis scarlet jeans on ebay as no longer made, these I find a little lower on the waist, I used to wear them back in the day, but gone up a size from 8 to ten so I've given them charity, and I've been buying them on ebay.

Rina66 · 13/11/2023 19:18

Would you wear leather look (coated) joggers or leggings? Would look great with a t shirt, cami or thin slim fit jumper then a blazer, shacket or long coatigan over?

Knitted dresses with tight sleeves or dresses with ruching over the tummy.

Satin bias cut midi skirts, pleated midi skirts or stretchy tube skirts with deep elasticated waists.

Thank you all so much for your suggestions! I'm taking it all in and doing some googling. Definitely some good ideas here! I love the look in all those photos @Rina66
