Let me tell you about the older couple I met today

... having coffee in town.

They looked absolutely fantastic.

Both probably in their 80s. The wife was wearing a navy blue suit with cropped trousers, a full sort of frilly white blouse and a bolero hat with a large brooch on it Her makeup was perfect. She wore navy suede gloves and had a fake fur stole also in navy blue.

Her husband was wearing a grey tweed three piece suit with a rose button hole, a black beret, a dark grey silk scarf and had on very large black rimmed glasses.

They looked absolutely wonderful and I was completely inspired. They were dressing for themselves, with clearly pleasure in what they wore and I felt that I could take some pointers in dressing not according to fashion but according to what you loved and suited you.

Me- in contrast- I was wearing boyfriend jeans, converse and a blue shirt. (I'm 50).

I think this marks a new phase in my life- not just wearing something that fits and is vaguely inoffensive- but wearing clothes that I love for the sheer happiness of it.

I was in Lewes last month.

One woman looked mid 70's had a slightly oversized tweed brown blazer, ankle length denim skirt, cross body bag, and khaki stompy boots. She had a long bob. She looked amazing.

Then, an older man probably late 70s, had horn rimmed glasses, handlebar moustache, waistcoat with white shirt and sleeves rolled up with jeans.

They sound beautiful.

@Bookist I need to read that thread!

You will be very warmly welcomed x

Yes, sorry @Bookist I meant to thank you earlier for that thread tip. It's very enjoyable.

You are very welcome x

Please ignore the four naysayers, OP. Your initial post was charming and filled with pleasure, and sadly many people will resent you for that. They might try and dress it up (sorry for the pun) as being morally superior to you, but actually they're just much more unhappy than you.

tsmainsqueeze · 12/11/2023 12:09

I think your thread is lovely in fact i feel quite inspired to make a bit more of an effort myself.
A few years ago i saw an elderly couple and the lady was wearing a pair of fab sparkly vintage earrings , they lit up her lovely face , i told her she looked amazing -she did !
She was so happy to receive the compliment , she had wondered if they were 'too much' i said they certainly weren't and she should carry on regardless.
There are some miserable sods on here who would rain on anybody's parade and there's enough misery in the world , i like knowing that the couple you saw and others like them are out there dressed to the nines , thanks for telling us about them.

@whiteshutters You mean to tell me that the iconic bra-burning scene in Carry On Girls is based on a lie? Say it isn't so! 😂

I don't know many well dressed boomers though. I did have one older ex colleague (67) who wore lovely loose silk tunics, but she was a textile conservator, so it was expected. My mum (71) is more normcore/ coastal grandmother, basically baggy trousers and tops, and that look depresses me. It's the lack of structure that makes people look like they have given up. Obviously individuals can wear whatever they want and not everyone is a peacock, but when the "given up on myself" group seem to be in the majority it all gets a bit sad.

Probably different if you live in a city of course, or anywhere a bit more alternative.

I LOVE stompy boots

And that woman's outfit sounds amazing

@MenopauseSucks ..I'm an older person..I work in a charity shop. I shop. I go to various appointments. I see great stylish women in all these places. I sometimes compliment other women on their great hairstyles, their overall style. Tell them they look lovely today. Patronising? Not in my book...surprised pleasure is always their response.
People can be such complete tools as shown on a lot of MN responses. It's a shame women continually seeking to undermine other women.

I like watching 60s tv just for the fashions. So interesting to see how things have changed.

I loved watching Mad Men for this reason. So glamorous.

Although I don’t wear loungewear particularly, I’m usually in jeans and a top with converse or trainers. I’ve started wearing more day dresses in the summer though over the last few years, which makes me feel like Ive made a bit of an effort.

😍😍😍 I was neglected as a child and basically dressed in rags, while my heart was in fashion, so now I have a huge wardrobe, mostly thrifted, and I dress in MY style. I'm always the most overdressed person in the room and I don't mind. I love seeing others who also dress for themselves, it's so fun!

OP - those posters are completely ridiculous. You've done nothing wrong. You're not patronising or ageist. I don't know what's wrong with those posters. You posted a completely innocent and lovely post which inspired me.

I agree. However, there seem to be a rather bitter group of people on MN who like to do nothing more than put people down, and can't seem to comprehend that there are actually nice people in the world who simply want to discuss something in a pleasant fashion. They seem to think they are superior to the rest of us.

My ex neighbour who was late 70's was like that. She always dressed in natural fabrics, woollen skirts , wool or cotton tops, and gold jewelry.
She had a beautiful bone structure and always wore a bit of mascara and lipstick, plus her naturally silver hair was always in a chignon.
She was stunning.

I was heading into town last week to join friends for a rare night out. At our age we meet early and so I found myself in the city centre, dressed up, while the shops were still open.

I popped into a few as I went past and it was a revelation! I've never dressed up for the mere act of shopping before, but I must admit it felt amazing to be glam as I sashayed around the place. I can't usually be arsed as I work full time and have DS etc but it did make me think: one day I'll have the time to do this whenever I like.

Sashayed!!! Love that word lol ..swishy sashayed 🤣

Me too.
Had very little clothes or shoes when kid.
I am very well dressed now..my own style admittedly, not conventional...i like it and whilst able will continue to do so.
Whilst my daughter was young i couldn't afford to dress well, priority was DD. When she grew up and had her own life it was then time for me.
