Outfit for a 90s party

It’s been a long time since I partied in the 90s as a 20ish year old. What does one wear to a 90s party in their 40s that won’t make me look totally ridiculous??

Fancy dress or 90s fashion? If the latter, my first thought was DMs with a long flowy skirt, long sleeved blouse and waistcoat. If it's more preposterous fancy dress then I'm really not sure!

Just head to primark and have a look at what they have, 90s has come back around so there are plenty of options.

Or pick a character/film that was popular then and look for inspiration

I would go as a 90’s back packer. Big hippy trousers, flip flops, a lonely planet guide, bucket of booze (Thailand style) and a tsang beer T-shirt.

I'd go for grunge, as I'd love an excuse to wear baggy jeans. Nirvana t-shirt, lumberjack shirt around your waist, smudged eyeliner. All set.

Satin slip dress over a cap sleeve fitted t shirt or under a fluffy jumper? Space buns? Chunky footwear? Combats and a crop top, ironed hair? Zara wotsits outfit on Strictly this week? Button through summer dress over shorts, check shirt over a grunge band t shirt and jeans, Una Thurman from Pulp Fiction? Rave? Dungarees and a bucket hat? Brown lipstick? (Or any other 90s make up trend that appeals to you.)

Yup. I went with combats, band T, Bjork buns and eyeliner. ALL and eyeliner.

All Saints - cargo pants and a vest. If you have straight hair, do that zig zag hair parting that me and my mates were all obsessed with having!

Grunge - white slip dress/night dress, loads of necklaces, DM's and messy hair and smudged eyes and lips.

Boot cut jeans, Addidas gazelles, parka, Addidas zip up top, bucket hat, can of red stripe. Hey presto your a member of Oasis/Stone Roses/Cast/OCS/Bluetones/pretty much any britpop band.

I went to an 80s party in summer and there were loads of men in shell suits, I thought they were more 90s.

I think it depends if you want street style or high fashion. I’ve just looked at a Vogue collection of Linda Evangalista photos from the 90s. One thing that struck me is they didn’t look like any era at all. Most would be worn now! Vivian Westwood was still doing the tartan - so that’s easy!

I loved that dress.

I'd do cargo pants - especially ones with embroidery on - Maharishi style - a tight cropped vest and trainers or DMs.

I love 90s style.

Don’t forget the butterfly clips and black choker

Our h&m had a 90s section when I went in last week. Full of high waisted baggy jeans and combat pants. Might be worth a look
