Wedding Guest Dress Help

I need help! I am going to a wedding at the start of December and just don’t know what to wear.

I am mid 30’s, 5ft 6 and a half but have a long torso. I have skinny arms and legs (regular length), 34d chest and a bit of a tummy.

I don’t like anything too high around my neck, and don’t tend to go for bright colours or anything super patterned. I’m really struggling with finding something. I don’t know if a skirt and top would be better than a dress but I’m crap at putting outfits together and don’t feel like I suit being all dressed up (which obviously may be in my head but it’s how I feel).

I don’t really have a budget in mind as I want to make sure it’s decent quality as everything in the past, I’ve gone for cheaper stuff that maybe doesn’t sit right etc due to cheaper material.

Where can I look? What do I wear? Can anyone help? I feel lost!

Fairly formal. It’s at a stately home/hall type place

You would have just enough time to order this, which is the least showy of the very beautiful designs available. Would need a very short jacket - sheepskin or velvet or tweed. (I know what I mean but hard to describe.)

Batnm · 06/11/2023 07:06

For a formal wedding in December ? 😳

For a formal wedding in December ?

Yes, why ever not? Perhaps you didn’t scroll down to see all the photos? It would look amazing with a short weighty jacket, some beautiful boots and a couple of well chosen pieces of jewellery. And it’s something one could wear again - in any season.

Sometimes I despair of other people’s lack of imagination!

Someone posted this Biden dress on another thread, it would be perfect for a December Wedding, comes in green red or navy!

@SomethingMustBeScaringThemAway I have an imagination, just don't like it for a December wedding. Neckline is awful and op states not a high neck.

SomethingMustBeScaringThemAway · 06/11/2023 07:50

🤷🏽‍♀️Not sure how a square neckline cut well below the collar bone could be described as high necked.

Obviously if I link something it’s because I think it could be wonderful on someone who liked it. But we all like different things. That’s not a problem.

Bearpawk · 06/11/2023 08:08

@BalanceNotSymmetry could you perhaps post some of your favourite dresses that you already have, just so we can get a sense of your style in order to make suggestions?
Where do you usually shop?
What colours do you like ?
Will you be wearing shoes/ boot// tights or no tights ?
Do you have a coat or jacket ?

Bearpawk · 06/11/2023 08:09

Also John Lewis is a good website to browse (with filters set) if you have the time

Whataretheodds · 06/11/2023 08:21

What's the dress code on the invitation and can you give us a range for your budget? Are you up for stuff that costs several £100s?

GettingStuffed · 06/11/2023 09:47

How about something like this
https://www.monsoon.co.uk/ruched-jersey-midi-dress-with-sustainable-cotton-blue-45078761.html

It's going to be versatile, to dress it up for a wedding add jacket in a toning colour gold jewellery, bag and heels.

Then afterwards it can be worn with trainers, clumpy boots etc

Sorry, it’s been a manic few days! Thanks for all the replies :) I’ll try to answer some of the questions but sorry if I miss any!

  • I normally wear a size 10
  • Lately I tend to shop in Next but don’t actually buy clothes that often. Style wise, I’m a jeans and Vans/black boots kind of person which is obviously a no go! If I have to dress up, or I’m browsing online, I tend to like the look of dresses/skirts that have lace or chiffon/tulle but they’re not must haves
  • I tend to go for black and grey and if I want colour then deep greens, purples and blues but I’m not really opposed to any colour I don’t think
  • I’ll probably wear low heeled shoes and tights (most likely skin coloured)
  • I have a black blazer I could wear or a few shrug type things
  • There’s no dress code on the invite. It’s a formal sounding place but they’re not a particularly formal couple if that makes sense!
  • Budget - Depends how versatile the outfit is and if I could wear it again but ideally below £150

I’ll have a look through some of the suggestions now :)

It's not the dress I would have picked from that site but there are some lovely dresses.
