Pls help me dress for the Savoy Grill

It's my husband's 50th birthday coming up and I've booked the Savoy Grill as something special for him. Their dress code is confusing for me. It's something comfortable you feel elegant in (or similar to that). He will be wearing a suit which I'm not sure if that's a good choice or not. I think men are expected to wear jackets.

I have ordered this dress: https://www.debenhams.com/product/fs-collection-velvet-wrap-style-long-sleeve-mini-dress-in-blue_p-3641b244-c25d-4fc7-b123-f8c16e2644e5?colour=Teal

His birthday is in January. Do you think this will be ok?

I also need shoes. I have size 8 (EU42) feet and I'm tall so ideally flat or low heels are needed.

For context I'm 36 size 14/16 (chubby hourglass), and 5'9. I'm not very good at dressing up. What else should I be thinking of?

I'm struggling to find the dress code on their website - can you copy/paste here what you have received rather than paraphrasing?

Hard to go wrong with a suit.

That dress looks lovely.

Would you feel more comfortable in flat boots than shoes?

In terms of flat shoes, Mary Janes would work, I think the ones with 2 bars or 3 bars are more stylish then 1 bar.
(I must admit I'm not a massive fan of the style)

I’ve not been there recently, but it was London casual — I wore a trouser suit over a T-shirt and expensive Italian trainers last time. The friend I was meeting wore a suit, but he had come straight from work. I think the time before that DH wore a jacket and jeans. No idea what I wore, but possibly a woollen wrap dress.

Slipknotted · 05/11/2023 07:54

The dress code just says no shorts, hoodies or tracksuits!

OverToYouTony · 05/11/2023 08:00

@Slipknotted yes I think you are right. I could have sworn I saw elegant and comfortable but on looking again that's for the Savoy in general.

Hopefully we won't be overdressed?

@Whataretheodds I was thinking Mary Janes too. I am struggling to find a pair I like though.

Would boots go with the dress?

No. I would say you can dress up if you want to without feeling out of place, but also that it’s certainly not obligatory, and that there will also be people there dressed in a fairly low-key way.

MissHavershamReturns · 05/11/2023 08:08

Are you going on a week might or weekend?

OverToYouTony · 05/11/2023 08:11

@MissHavershamReturns mid week. Nothing like a January birthday!

OP posts:
MissHavershamReturns · 05/11/2023 08:16

Excellent! I think if mid week suit will be fine for your dp as some will have come from work and he shouldn’t feel overdressed. I think your dress will be lovely.

I go to similar places through work a lot and the range of what is worn is quite wide nowadays.

ChristmasPuddingFace · 05/11/2023 08:37

Don't overthink it.

The Savoy is very relaxed. I went to a wedding lunch there.
The Ritz is more fussy- men in ties and jackets, no trainers.

The no-nos would be scruffy trainers (on either of you), joggers etc , jeans.

You can really wear almost anything that resembles smart casual or dressier, and TBH you will get more 'looks' for being over-dressed than under-dressed.

OverToYouTony · 05/11/2023 08:38

@Whataretheodds yes love those! What colour would work best?

@MissHavershamReturns thank you. That makes me feel much better. I worry about these things.

OP posts:
Whataretheodds · 05/11/2023 08:40

All 3 colours would work with that dress so I'd go for the ones you like the best /that you think you might get more wear out of.

You can wear any of those with jeans and a jumper afterwards.

ChristmasPuddingFace · 05/11/2023 08:41

Is this lunch or dinner?

Lunch is not formal as people use the Grill for all kinds of things, even business meetings and lunches.

You'd be fine in any kind of dress or smart trousers etc.

I've eaten at the Ritz and the Savoy and they are not as 'posh' as you imagine. Within the dress code, people wear all kinds of things.

TerfTalking · 05/11/2023 08:45

I've been and would say that dress is over dressed.

Everyone was smart casual when I went, nice shirt or dress but not party wear.

OverToYouTony · 05/11/2023 08:46

@Whataretheodds I think the pink ones as I have a bag to match.

@ChristmasPuddingFace it's for dinner. I have never been to somewhere like this before but I want to make the effort for his birthday.

I have done mid week lunch a few times there. Last time I wore a Per Una blouse, black trousers and very ordinary comfortable black shoes. I love the Savoy Grill, enjoy!

AnonyLonnymouse · 05/11/2023 08:46

Sorry, but I am afraid that I don’t like the dress - it is quite shiny and combined with the length has the potential to look a little cheap. There are a lot of lights and mirrors at the Savoy! I would go for something matt, perhaps with a bit of beading or similar.

When I went I wore a matt silk crepe knee-length dress (short sleeved but all fairly covered up) with vintage-style heeled shoes. That felt about right.

Agree with this. I think you need something elegant rather than a cocktail type dress, also I think the length is too short.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 05/11/2023 08:50

That dress is far too dressy, looks a bit Christmas partyish imho.

The Savoy will be low key, so don't overthink it as a pp said and go for understated/ casual.

Quitelikeacatslife · 05/11/2023 08:51

I like the dress, I'd go with the gold Oliver Bonas shoes but they also do ones with a tiny heel might be more flattering

Torganer · 05/11/2023 08:58

I have been quite a few times, lunch and dinner and I would say it’s informal, but more like ‘smart-casual’. Chinos, shirts, and some suits, etc. Lots of business meetings. Last time I went I wore a jumper dress, opaque tights and lace up, thick some boots. I didn’t feel under or overdressed.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/11/2023 09:00

I’ve eaten there, and honestly, anything you’d wear to the smarter sort of restaurant would be fine. You really aren’t likely see people dressed up to the nines.
