Hi I have a full head of grey hair. Lately I have become quite depressed with the colour. I am strongly considering, using a box dye, to give it some colour, and give me a much needed boost. My natural colour was a chestnut brown.I cannot afford to go to the hairdressers, sadly. Can you give me some advice and reasurrance I am not heading for a catastrophy? I have never tried home colouring before. I am most afraid if it all falling
out 🤣 🤣

I have been touching up my roots with a box dye for the past year. I just got fed up of wasting time at the hairdresser. I have dark brown hair and use Clairol Nice and Easy, It's not much worse than the hairdresser, though I do miss a few patches. Not fallen out either, though dye does of course make it drier.

I've dyed my hair at home for years. Been blonde, red, brown and black.

Just buy a L'Oréal one like nice and easy. You can't go wrong.

Uniquuue · 02/11/2023 18:04

Oh maybe that's not L'Oréal. I just buy whatever main brand is on offer.

Died mine at home for years!

What I will say is though, go for a lighter name as it does come out darker;
Medium dark brown - basically black
Light brown - medium brown

I HATE hairdressers but my hair was a real mess a couple of years ago and my Mum persuaded me to get the hairdresser to sort it out. First one I went to was fantastic and reasonably priced. Second time I got it done I hated the colour. Third time, same-had to buy a box dye anyway to correct it. FOURTH time, hairdresser bleached my (usual ashblond) hair all through instead of touching up my roots. I looked like a long-haired 90s eminem. I had a big event the following day and I looked dreadful-I was SO upset. I dyed it pale pink (box dye!) to salvage it somewhat. Since then I have not touched hairdressers even though I can afford to. Box dyes all the way!

I let my grey grow out during lockdown, then stupidly went and put a box dye on it. It looked dreadful and I spent days trying to wash it back out again with crushed vitamin c tablets and head and shoulders! It really did go "menopause mahogany" shade and looked dreadfully artificial.

I now use a coloured brunette shampoo. It builds gently, and gives you a much more natural effect than a box dye. The Plantur 39 brown one is great.

I have naturally dark brown/chestnut hair, but lots of grey. I've never grown it out, but its more than 50%. I've used Clairol casting colors for years. Its a semi, so if you don't like the colour, it won't leave a permanent line which takes years to grow out. They are normally 2 pack for £12 at more supermarkets.

Note: buy a much lighter colour that you think you'd need. I buy light brown, which comes out dark brown. I sometimes use chocolate truffle or iced chocolate which have more chestnutty red in them, but NEVER use a darker one, unless you want it very dark. It does eventually wash out though. It says its 28 washes on the pack, but I've never gone that long between colours to know. I see the grey regrowth and know its time to do it again.

You’ll be fine with brown shades op, they are semi permanent unilkelike blonde shades which are permanent and more damaging. The Superdrug own brand ones are good and v cheap. As others have said they nearly always turn out darker than expected so start off a bit lighter than you actually want.

Questionsquestions134 · 03/11/2023 14:11

I dye it and use root spray in between. Superdrug do one and it's 2 for £7 at the moment that works well to use on your hairline. I have found the nice and easy box dye works well

I listened to all the advice you gave and decided to try Nice and Easy by Clairol. I chose the dark blonde shade. I am so pleased with the results. Not too dark but so much more flattering than the grey. 😍
