Dress/outfit help needed please

I have a wedding to go to in 3 weeks' time and need something to wear. I'm size 18 and 5'5", aged 60. I've spent years in jeans and t-shirts and have no idea what to buy. I'd prefer trousers and a top to a dress. I have to have something that's not clingy or silky - my figure won't cope with that. Does anyone have any idea what I could wear? Not high necked as I'm apple shaped with big boobs.

@frillseeking I'm copying you in, in the hope you'll see this as well.

Thanks.

because of your colouring I searched for green dresses on the John Lewis site and came up with a few nice dresses:

Elegant boho (might need a thermal vest)

https://www.johnlewis.com/monsoon-sarah-embellished-wrap-dress-green/p111136230

Classic jersey wrap

https://www.johnlewis.com/jolie-moi-rashelle-jersey-maxi-dress/p110318308

Glamorous

https://www.johnlewis.com/ro-zo-super-sparkle-ruch-front-dress-green/p111180862

A bit more pricy but a very elegant and versatile option

https://www.johnlewis.com/gerard-darel-jovana-abstract-print-wrap-dress-green/p110573201

i think any of these could be worn with classic stilettos and nude tights or boho platforms and coloured opaques, maybe a burgundy, with the really snazzy dress. A clutch bag too.

you didn’t say but do you have good legs? That might give you some more options. And how posh is the wedding?

OutfitNeededPlease · 01/11/2023 19:25

Thanks for all the links. It's not posh posh but I'll be expected to scrub up.

I'm not happy wearing a dress simply because I haven't worn one for so long - same with heels. I wish there was a way of opting out of these bloody things!

Thanks though re the colour - I've been looking for green, too.

I should have read the OP more carefully! There are some great jumpsuits but I’m not good at telling what figure they would flatter so here are some trousers and tops.

These are fab and I think could work with several different styles of top. Even just a plain silk shirt like in the photo perhaps. Maybe a blazer

https://www.johnlewis.com/jigsaw-mason-tailored-velvet-trousers-teal/p111077479

Amazing and really festive - again could be balanced with a more conservative or drapy top

https://www.johnlewis.com/live-unlimited-curve-sequin-trousers-green/p110955047

These are very classic and probably easier to find something to go with as they are black
https://www.johnlewis.com/and-or-vegas-plain-velvet-wide-leg-trousers-black/p110648767

this is probably the wrong colour, but with a good bra this sort of style could be comfy and flattering
https://www.johnlewis.com/phase-eight-alix-sparkly-plisse-top-rose-gold/p111016908

again not sure about colour but the style is good
https://www.johnlewis.com/phase-eight-medora-sequin-shirt-silver/p111016902

amazing blazer that I could see with the black velvet trousers perhaps and a simple cami top, perhaps adding a touch of green with bag or accessories. Chic but festive without actually being Christmassy

I will look at shoes as well.

Thank you! So much here for me to look at.

Can anyone tell me whether Hobbs comes up small?

Gabor could be good

https://www.johnlewis.com/gabor-henge-block-heel-suede-court-shoes-atlantik/p110550999

or if you want a very low heel
https://www.johnlewis.com/gabor-develop-leather-court-shoes-black/p110516124

all are totally classic and look v comfortable.

then there’s these - especially if you’ve got good ankles
https://www.johnlewis.com/paradox-london-flynn-wide-fit-shimmer-block-heel-slingbacks/p111112531

or even these, which are very nice and also fashionable - although proceed with caution (not the easiest style to wear IMHO)

That's a lovely dress, really nice. And don't wear heels if you don't usually. Happy feet are key to getting through long days at weddings!

Can anyone tell me whether Hobbs comes up small?

I don't think so, at least not for the work dresses I've bought - and that velvet once looks very nice!

Moirarosesgarden · 01/11/2023 20:14

Lovely dress and lots of flat or low heel shoes would go with it. Google “low heel sparkly shoes” and lots come up that could work.

Thanks so much, I really appreciate all your help.

I find them about average. I’m also 5’5’’ apple shaped and a size 16/18.

I have this in Navy for a christening but could easily be dressed up.

That other green Hobbs dress is lovely but that belt on my waist wouldn't look good, I can assure you! On with the diet.

If you don't want a dress what about this green velvet suit from M&S, I was looking at this earlier!

@OutfitNeededPlease That dress is beautiful and very suitable. The cut looks very flattering too.

OutfitNeededPlease · 01/11/2023 21:55

@shoeawsome I have ordered the Hobbs dress now, but will definitely look at that trouser suit if the dress doesn't look good.
