How to style this skirt?

I have been given a beatiful skirt but have no idea how to style it. Tops and shoes/boots.

My usual style is cords/ jeans etc with jumpers or casual cotton tops and DM boots. I have no other skirts and if I wear dresses, I wear them with thick tights and DMs.

The skirt is this shape, maybe an inch or two longer. It’s high end (maybe jaeger) and a deep purple, heavy ish fabric with a sheen. It’s beautiful quality and not my usual style.

Any thoughts? Please help me Style and beauty gurus! I am 5’7, size 10, hourglass.

Well for starters nothing like that appalling styling on the example.

If it were me, footwear, flat lace up boots and opaque tights (I can't wear DMs but yours will be fine) or flat pumps and opaque tights or flat knee boots.

On top a loose jumper or buttoned cardigan which comes down to the waist line or just below worn over , not tucked in, with for warmth (rather than to be seen) a thin long sleeved vest / t shirt tucked in.

Sounds gorgeous.

That sort of skirt goes with pretty much anything. Truly. No specialist knowledge necessary. And what looks best will depend on your exact proportions, so experimentation is your best way forward.

The thing to do is to set aside a bit of time and try it on with all the jumpers, shirts, tops you already own. See how it looks with each one. Tucked in or not, belted or not. Do you have any jackets - try those too. Keep an open mind - I have a red white and blue tweed skirt that - quite unreasonably - looks fabulous with a bright green jumper.

Eventually you’ll have an idea of which looks you feel happiest with, and you’ll maybe want to buy more of those things.

I’d wear it with a fitted polo or other high neck top tucked in, as the skirt has a feature waistband. Than tall boots at this time of year. I’d actually go for black or another dark colour and make the skirt the colour feature. It’s lovely.

That last outfit (cropped jacket) would look so much better with knee high boots, @Seaside3! With ankle boots it’s rather like dance routines in early rounds of Strictly - several good bits but no flow.

Seaside3 · 29/10/2023 09:47

@Gruelle I quite like the preppy look if it, but know what you mean. I was really looking at the jacket, not the shoes.

Just type 'full skirt outfut' into Pinterest, op, it cane up with loads of ideas.

I love this, the waist band on your skirt is lovely so I'd tuck in.

Or this works with dms

Cropped/biker jackets and a plain t?

There's a Cabbages and Roses outfit on the pinboard you linked to (some fabulous looks there)

How C&R style similar full skirts might be worth looking at

Ooh love the idea of a roll neck jumper! I’ve lost 5 stone and wouldn’t wear high neck before. Just need to find a nice soft one (sensory issues). So reassuring to know I can wear with DMs.

It’s much nicer than the one I linked to, but yes with a wide lovely waist band. I’ve never worn tucked in tops, always felt too large, so must try that too.

Thank you!

I wear that sort of skirt all the time because they're so versatile. With tshirts and trainers most of the time, or with a silk blouse when I want to be smart at work, or with a crop top to go out, or with a white buttoned shirt and pearls with a jumper over the top for a preppy look, or with a roll neck when it's cold, or black lace and big boots for a gotic look.

Seaside3 · 29/10/2023 14:44

@StamppotAndGravy youre making me want a skirt, and I've always avoided them.

StamppotAndGravy · 29/10/2023 17:05

@Seaside3 even better with this sort of skirt is that they sit a bit higher or a bit lower depending how much lunch you ate, and don't mind a generous arse and thighs which make jeans so difficult. They do require leggings or tights though if it's chilly, which you might consider as bad!

Seaside3 · 29/10/2023 17:08

@StamppotAndGravy it's the gapping between top and dirt I've always found difficult, but I've taken to tucking stuff in, so should work.

TruthRevolution · 29/10/2023 17:10

I would wear it with a skinny rib polo neck, tights and DM's.
