Best high street collabs

Out of curiosity and because I like to search vinted/charity shops for a bargain, what do you rate as having been some of the best collaborations on the high st? I still love some of the Kate Moss for Topshop pieces from 2000s and can see they still sell at reasonable prices. Particular favs are the tea dresses she did.

Oh, if you’re looking for pre-owned stuff I have another historical Topshop suggestion - not exactly a collaboration but Simone Shailes’ entire graduation collection of epic knitwear from 2008. I have a single piece breathlessly purchased at the time after seeing the Vogue article. It’s unbelievable now that this sort of cutting edge quality was available on the High Street. I worn mine relentlessly, until I realised how precious it was. Now I just stroke it occasionally. Simone Shailes went on to become Head Designer of Knitwear at Hermes.

I think pretty much the entire British high street was amazing from around 2000 until the banking crash. Manufacturing had been outsourced and prices were falling but the quality was mostly holding up and it was endlessly inventive, although admittedly a lot of it was unacknowledged catwalk knock-offs. It might have been a house built on sand but I can't pretend I didn't enjoy it while it lasted.

Anyway for collabs my vote would be for:
Jil Sander for Uniqlo. It's one of the few things that might still get me onto Vinted.

Matthew Williamson for H&M. Probably not my thing any more but I remember some silk dresses in fab prints - I've still got one somewhere.

Erdem for H&M. Disclaimer: I never saw any of it because, as I remember, it sold out instantly. But it was very well received.

Not a designer collab but the M&S Best of British range.

Jil Sander Uniqlo. Mapplethorpe Uniqlo. William Morris print H&M. I used to get stopped in the street all the time and asked where my Morris print blouses were from. £14 each at H&M. A friend told me she'd assumed it was £££ from Liberty.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 25/10/2023 15:05

The Jil Sander / Uniqlo would have been my follow up choice - purely for design rather than fabric quality though.

I’m wearing a shirt I bought from the mid-lockdown collection today. With the sleeves cut off, because they turned to rags before the rest of the garment. (Under a hand-me-down boy’s prep school sweater and some disinfectant stained Uniqlo cords. I don’t look at all ‘fashion’.)

I should have preserved it in its brand new state and sold it for a fortune a few years hence!

Interesting, @TotalOverhaul - from a recent thread I discovered a ‘William Morris’ collab with Warehouse. Cotton dresses that were head and shoulders above the rest of the brand’s clothes. I never saw them in the flesh but a poster who bought one confirmed it was as good as it looked on a screen. I was quite tempted but big flowery dresses tend to sit unworn year after year here, so I resisted.

I'm sorry @PerditaProvokesEnmity but Vogue are taking the piss out of people 😂Looked at your link and then another and I see this. If that's what's to wear this Autumn ....and at a cost of about 4k 🙄

Nothing to do with me, @bronkie …

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 25/10/2023 15:36

I was talking about a Topshop jumper I bought nearly 15 years ago and can still wear with great delight. So Vogue did me a favour by informing me of it all those years ago.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 25/10/2023 15:43

That Topshop x Kate moss collection had me in a chokehold back in the day

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 26/10/2023 10:00

Perhaps I’m the only person in the country who never gave a toss about Kate Moss, or her style? Grin (Though I really, really loved Corinne Day as a photographer and miss her work awfully.)

I seem to recall feeling a bit disgruntled by that Top Shop collab, because I had no interest in wearing leather shorts (or whatever, I forget) and the shops were suddenly uncomfortably full of eager Moss fans.

clowniform · 26/10/2023 10:18

Ah this thread has made me nostalgic. I remember every other girl in the pub wearing that Kate Moss yellow silk teadress. And being cruelly disappointed by the Celia Birtwell collab (even as a teen I turned my nose up at the fabric quality). Generally miss Topshop Boutique/Unique more though!
Like PP I had a lot from the +J Uniqlo collections. More under the radar but the Gazinskaya Stories one was also great. I missed out on the most famous epic queue ones though (Erdem, Kane etc.) elbows clearly not sharp enough.

Has anyone tried anything from the Peter Do Banana Republic one currently?

Edited

Those blouses are now about six years old and faded as I wore them so often but if I ever get them out, I still get compliments every time. Best £14 ever.

The Stella McCartney for H&M collab. I got a lovely skinny scarf when it first came out. I don’t think high street, high end collabs appeal to me as much as they used to. Agree that the high street stuff of years back was better quality wise.

I think it may have been mentioned on the current Parisienne dressing thread, @clowniform.

bronkie · 26/10/2023 13:54

How does a Stella McCartney skinny scarf differ from any other skinny scarf that is out there? Other than the label tag?

You're at least one of two - never found anything appealing or interesting about her in any way. Style, look, the cool girl personality - I thought the 'easyJet basic bitch' story epitomised everything I needed to know about her (or wished to).

Collaborations - personally love the Marimekko/Uniqlo ranges, appreciate not to everyone's taste but the linen mix caftan dresses are wonderful for heatwave summers and holidays.

bingohandjob · 26/10/2023 14:09

I really wanted the House of Hackney/Barbour dresses last year to be wonderful but I tried one on and looked like a Victorian child ghost dressed in their mother's elaborate night gown.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 29/10/2023 01:45

Probably not my style, though.
