Plus sized sequins?!

GreenVelvetCushions · 24/10/2023 17:18

Help please S&Bers... I am finding myself constantly drawn to sequins at the moment.

Just bought the most beautiful navy sequin party dress sized 18 and it made me took like a pregnant disco ball! 🪩 So I sadly had to send it back.

What glittering cool and fabulous styles can a XXL middle aged lady wear this festive season, without looking frumpy or preggers?! 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

Primark? I got a red sequinned jacket from there and my very fashion-conscious son wanted one!

soundsys · 24/10/2023 17:22

(I'm a size 18 and late 30s. My mid-60s also a size 18 man has one too!

Cider or ASOS

Boymum2104 · 24/10/2023 17:32

Boohoo have lovely sequin blazers in the plus section & trousers to match!

PrintersCourt · 24/10/2023 17:46

I bought the most beautiful tulle skirt with little moon and star sequins yesterday. Unfortunately I look like the Sugar Plum Fairy’s fat sister in it 😳

SM4713 · 24/10/2023 17:58

Anything shiny such as sequins and shiny fabrics reflect the light and can make lumps and bumps appear more obvious. Velvet, on the other hand, helps to absorb the light and makes things far less obvious. I'm larger and find a velvet dress/top works much better. If you want some bling, add a sequined mini jacket/bolero thing, glittery necklace/earrings or bag etc.

Nodashians · 24/10/2023 18:03

I have lost weight but last year I wore a very pale gold top that stopped about mid thigh, fake leather leggings and black
suede ankle boots and got lots of compliments at a party I went to. I’m gutted it doesn’t fit now.

Nodashians · 24/10/2023 18:07

It was this top in a very pale ivory/gold colour , I went the full hog and added diamanté accessories.

Plus sized sequins?!
Nodashians · 24/10/2023 18:16

This is the colour, I think it’s a flattering colour.

Keep sequins to a minimum (maybe a head accessory or a clutch bag) or the slimmest areas of your body like along the cuffs and neckline or hem. rest dark in velvet like pp said. Keep sequins as an accent.

ChocoChocoLatte · 24/10/2023 19:05

M&S have fab party options this season

LateMumma · 24/10/2023 19:05

New look and H&M had some lovely sequin wrap dresses in a size 18

CinnamonJellyBeans · 24/10/2023 19:24

That top from @Nodashians is nice. I think sequinned blazers do not look good if you are broad across the top half, as they are often not well-tailored, do not drape and can make you look like a festive fridge on legs. A draped jacket looks much better.

This is the risk we take 🤣

Marks had some sequined navy trousers going up to a 22 or so; they are wide legged, almost like a skirt, surprisingly flattering and about £55. Also in black and champage; they have a whole range.

Their sequin patterned jumper for £29 looks lovely on the website too.

Seaside3 · 25/10/2023 08:02

As a fellow fat sequin lover, I either keep them to a minimum, or think 'to hell with it' and shine away.

Shangrilalala · 25/10/2023 08:09

I bought some fabulous champagne sequinned trousers from H&M last year. Problem is the sequins catch on each other and lock together as I walk, leaving me to strut about like a toddler long overdue a nappy change.

LookItsMeAgain · 25/10/2023 08:39

I wouldn't go for sequins all over, decide if you want them on the upper half or lower half of your outfit and then go from there.

Here are a few suggestions (and I quite like how they have them on the models so there are some suggestions on how to wear them and pair them with other clothes)

Option 1 - Sequin collared shirt
Option 2 - This link is for a jumper but the skirt the model is wearing is what I wanted to show you
Option 3 - for all over, it would have to be a dress

Divebar2021 · 25/10/2023 09:42

I like the evening offerings from M&S this year - and I’m not always that impressed with them. Sequins I really love on other people - especially when they make them work in the daytime with an old bashed up pair of jeans. You should be guided by what feels great when you put it on. Don’t worry too much about “rules” on size or anything else. We’re very programmed around dressing to be “flattering” there’s only so much a bit of fabric can do. Don’t dim your light OP.

Excellent point @Divebar2021
