'going out' tops

OMGitsnotgood · 22/10/2023 14:50

I’ve quite a lot of nights out in the next couple of months. Some Christmas dos in December but several birthdays & general catch up events, usually involving bars & restaurants, not clubs.

I am really struggling with things to wear. I would love to be able to wear a jumpsuit but have tried on loads and not found one yet that suits - probably because I’m 5’4 with a bit of a tummy. Also not keen die toilet reasons.
Dresses I’d be ok with but would want to be able to wear them with flats (i’ve a bit of a walk to get the tram and several of the events require a walk at the other end).
I think I’d be better off with a couple of new tops but struggling to find anything I like. I have access to most high street stores, am ok with buying online if there are free returns.

I wear Autumnal colours but can get away with black.
I am curvy (size 14 with biggish boobs and a bit of a tummy).
Don’t want skin tight
Don’t want something i would have worn to work (corporate office)
I don’t mind sleeveless or sleeves (as long as material won’t make me too hot)
I can’t wear high necks, need to show a bit of skin but not too much cleavage

Would anyone like to help me look please? I'd like to see specific recommendations as sometimes other people pick out things i wouldn't have considered.
If you don't have time to look but have a recommendation for online stores i might not of heard of, that would be great too.
Thanks

I'm also a curvy 14. I find going out tops one of the hardest things to find, and almost everything now is high necked, in horrible material or both.

If I'm wearing jeans and boots, I've got an All Saints silky kimono that works well to feel a bit dressed up, over a vest or t-shirt.

I also quite like a sequin t-shirt with a blazer or biker jacket or jersey jacket over it

Seaside3 · 22/10/2023 15:48

I'm more of a 16/18 and my latest favourite is a satin type shirt, tucked in, sleeves rolled up, unbuttoned as far as you dare. I've added a see through sparkly mesh top under, so it's super sexy, but without being revealing. Loads of compliments every time I wear it. Hot both in h and m, but I'm sure it's a look you can find in most shops. Thank Trinny for the inspiration of the mesh layering.

It's a pain isn't it!

Thanks for sharing what you wear, will take a look at kimonos and also maybe look for jazzier things to go under the jackets I've got. I've one that is quite lightweight with ruched sleeves which i tend to use for flying/cool holiday evenings. it might be cool enough to wear over something as part of the outfit, rather than take it off

I wouldn't tuck in, prefer tops to drape over my stomach - but like the idea, will see what i can find along those lines and try on. Thank you

@OMGitsnotgood I used to feel the same, but after watching countless videos of people tucking their tops in, I concluded they always look better. Gives more shape and a longer leg. (Only 5'2, so any help.is needed). Once I got over myself I realised generally a tuck looks better.

I hope you find something suitable.

anon2022anon · 22/10/2023 16:28

I've recently got this from Zara. It comes up large, I kept the small as a size 12-14, although with small boobs

Please can you show an example of what you mean by sparkly mesh top?

I'd also like the answer to this question!

anon2022anon · 22/10/2023 16:32

I also got these, which are really thin, and would be good for eating out- are you brave enough to try with a skirt? I got a leather midi, but possibly a mini might be better length wise for you? This is more sparkly than it looks.

That is very pretty but pink really isn't one of my colours. Hope it will help someone else reading this thread because it is lovely

That is lovely and i can see how it would work beautifully with a skirt. I'm not sure about the neckline - if I don't have a bit more flesh showing, i look 'all boob'.But I have access to Zara so will see if I can find it in store and try on

@genesis92 here you go. I got the black, it is see through and I'm no longer 18, so wouldn't wear it alone. But under a shirt or a jacket, it's really nice.

I got this from Next last week for a girls night out this week. Can’t go wrong with leopard print - it’s tucked in here but longer and flattering left out

That is fab, will definitely try that on. I wandered round Next last week and don't recall seeing it but will look again before ordering online.

Wrap top? Shows a bit of cleavage without being revealing https://www.fatface.com/women/clothing/tops-t-shirts/reese-velvet-wrap-top/981684.html?dwvar9816844color=DARKNAVY#q=Wrap&lang=enGB&start=7

CharlotteRumpling · 22/10/2023 18:22

I love those Zara tops. But find the Zara site so hard to navigate.

anon2022anon · 22/10/2023 18:29

@CharlotteRumpling such a bad website! I change the layout to show 6 items in a row or whatever (on the actual website, there's boxed with one, two or six squares in the top right corner). If I find something the right shape/ style, click through and go to the bottom of the page, the algorithms work quite well from there to give you alternative items.

Silver is a big trend at the moment, how about this? Would work with jeans, trousers or a skirt

that is really lovely, possibly too warm for me but will try it in if they have one in my local fat face. Thank you for suggesting it - I will search for wrap tops/ keep an eye out in stores as I think that might be the sort of thing I need
