Best warm lightweight winter coat?

I seem to buy a coat every year, but none seem to keep me warm on the coldest days.

I'm thinking of getting rid of all these and buying one good warm coat. Budget £200 but preferably less.

Preferably lightweight as I have kids to wrestle / bags to carry. Nothing too long as I'm short. I tried a sheepskin last year and it was too heavy for me.

I'm thinking of something like this but don't want to make yet another coat mistake.

When people say cost, I think knee length or longer. I'd freeze in that!

Uniqlo dons nice lightweight down coats.

I think wool coats are back in this year as well.

How about this one?

The Didriksons one looks good. And I agree you would feel much warmer if your coat goes down to your hips at least.

If you get a shorter jacket you will have more freedom of movement than most longer styles, but you won't be as warm. There's always a trade off.

I have a mid thigh down jacket from patagonia which is actually incredibly lightweight, and also pretty good for warmth. But for when it is really proper cold and potentially damp as well, I wear a knee length coat, with down on the inside and a weatherproof outer layer. I invested in a Scandinavian Editions one a cpuple of years ago in their sale, and plan to wear it every midwinter for a decade. It is toasty.
