Slightly fancy pub meal

Cocoadream · 18/10/2023 20:34

Off for a pub meal on Saturday night with DHs side of the family. We very rarely get together and there will be a couple of new people I'll be meeting. Casual pub but due to the occasion, I feel like making an effort.

What shall I wear?

I like some of the dresses which came up on the Fatface link from @Workawayxx - particularly the check cord shirt dress and the sweater dress . Worn with thick tights and boots .

Well you are saying that. You could have just said "the gilet, etc, might be out of the OP's comfort zone"- rather than what you've actually said.

I didn't like the gilets on first look, but you know I didn't know they even existed and on a second and third look at least one of them would go well as an extra layer for me. I'm not the OP, but ideas are open to anyone.

Well, I could have said that, but it would have been slightly duller and less amusing.

Ideas are certainly open to anyone. But if it were up to me, someone suggesting Joanie dresses on every single style and beauty thread would get a permaban from the area.

NatashaDancing · 20/10/2023 10:55

It wasn't particularly amusing but I suppose humour is subjective.

This is what I would wear. But that will no doubt generate a "eugh, nobody wears that, look at ridiculous price, why not wear jeans and a leather jacket?, that won't catch a man's eye"

Suggesting jeans and a leather jacket is a bit like suggesting "wear clothes - they're great"

I'd wear a cord dress with boots. In a brightish colour.

Nodashians · 20/10/2023 12:12

I’d just concentrate on something with a really nice top half, do your nails and hair and wear a bracelet or two. These are the only things I notice when I go out for a meal with friends/family.

Nice - and very Charlotte R!

I’ve just received this wrap top and am pleased with it. I’m going to wear with black jeans and boots for Christmas pub visits and meals out, it feels cosy without being too warm or heavy. I think it’s nice to have an interesting neckline if you’re sitting down a lot and it’s quite forgiving on my problem stomach area.

I generally default to casual dress, coloured tights and flat boots for meals in pubs. Casual for me ranges from denim shirt dresses to more of the t-shirt/sack type, but in a more elevated material. I’ve got one in very dark grey embellished velvet from White Company a few years ago that’s a favourite for this kind of thing. Or my current go-to is a ribbed, long-sleeved bodycon one, which I didn’t think I could carry off any more, but is surprisingly flattering.

DiamandaTheGreat · 20/10/2023 15:10

I like that, @ThoseDamnCrows - lovely shade of blue.

Personally I don't think suggesting jeans and leather jacket is just like saying "wear clothes - they're great", especially not to someone who might spend most days wearing a suit, or a uniform, or outdoor gear, or scrubs or something else very specific. If you're not someone who goes out a lot or who has lost confidence, you might be pleased to hear that that kind of outfit is considered suitable for the pub/a fairly casual meal with friends.

I.mesn, it's Style & Beauty - there isn't always going to be a consensus, and even if there is, it doesn't mean it's the only feasible.option! I think you're right, though, @NatashaDancing, about some people only being able to conceive of what they would usually wear, and being surprised at suggestions outside of that range. But it takes all sorts!

Greeksummer · 20/10/2023 15:12

I think some posters can't imagine anything different from what they themselves wear.

Rich coming from you @NatashaDancing 😂

Greenpolkadot · 20/10/2023 15:29

Iv enjoyed looking at all the dresses on these web sites iv never heard of.
Im 67 so i dont know if any of these would look ok on me,,,but some are sooo lovely

Graciebobcat · 20/10/2023 15:32

Who said that? I think you are jumbling up comments from several posters together.

Well , yes that's exactly what I was doing. It's a compilation of comments. Some might be paraphrased.

At that price range I'd go for something from Joannie.

Love these. I adore the blue swan dress!

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 21/10/2023 10:02

I like the style of that dress @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie . Looks like you had a good bargain as well .

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/10/2023 10:17

Thanks @ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea I’m tempted to get it in green as well.

CharlotteRumpling · 21/10/2023 11:06

I quite like that Whistles dress @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie but it looks a bit short? Worried I might flash someone as I live in a windy part of London. I am a bit sick of midis and want to get my legs out more.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/10/2023 11:51

I’m a short arse. It’s just above the knee on me.

I like it too but thought it may be too long on me as I’m short, I’d wear it with tights and ankle boots.

CharlotteRumpling · 21/10/2023 12:36

Probably too short on me then.I am nearly 5"8. I wish tiers would disappear too.

LanternFields · 21/10/2023 18:57

Im sorry Natasha but those dresses are extremely conspicuous for a small family pub meal Grin
I doubt she wants to go out looking like a top heavy Hollie Hobbie.

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 21/10/2023 19:35

Just don't order bum and chips @LunaNorth 😆
