Slightly fancy pub meal

Cocoadream · 18/10/2023 20:34

Off for a pub meal on Saturday night with DHs side of the family. We very rarely get together and there will be a couple of new people I'll be meeting. Casual pub but due to the occasion, I feel like making an effort.

What shall I wear?

I'm size 12 busty and had forgotten how flattering wrap tops are. I bought two from FatFace recently and have worn them to pub lunches, the styling on their website is awful though. I've just ordered a few more from Next including a couple of velvet ones.

Sadly (because it wouldn'tve been the case with the early Laura Ashley) the dresses make even the models look much fatter than they are. The only tolerable (though still wouldn't be that eye catching to a bloke in itself) one is this one https://joanieclothing.com/laura-ashley-x-joanie-rhian-gracie-floral-print-midi-dress.html but I don't like the collar.

Did they edit her milking stool out of the photo?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/10/2023 19:13

Jesus...this thread went very weird!

What can I wear to the pub asks OP. How about a dead yeti and some clogs, or maybe worry about if men will 'kink' over you or not says MN.

The Joanie dresses look a bit fussy to me but maybe that's because I'm feeling a bit over ditsy prints and lots of fabric. I'd probably go with a Whistles cocoon shape mini dress with tights and boots, or with jeans and a silky shirt.

EastEndQueen · 19/10/2023 20:03

Ted Baker is doing some absolutely beautiful bodies, tops and jumpers this season in velvet, sheer, silky fabrics etc. They would look lovely with black jeans or a leather/leather look trousers or skirt

EastEndQueen · 19/10/2023 20:03

I also find the Joanie stuff very fussy and easy to transfer over into frump

DiamandaTheGreat · 19/10/2023 21:59

Oh wow, I thought I quite liked Dawn O'Porter's style but those Joanie frocks are not doing it for me 😳 maybe I just like her cardies!

Agree with a pp about needing to be able to shed layers if it's hot - I run warm generally.

Generally I'm a fan of jeans and a silk shirt if I can't settle on anything else - I like the Autograph ones but sometimes the colours are a bit wacky. I know.how it feels, though OP, to have lost confidence in choosing anything other than standard daywear - I really struggle at weddings nowadays, even though I've been to blinkin hundreds! And definitely on nights out.

CharlotteRumpling · 19/10/2023 22:21

This thread is super entertaining😁I have no suggestions. I think I have totally lost touch with fashion. I would be boiling in those gilets.

Blankscreen · 20/10/2023 00:02

I think it depends on what type of pub.

A country gastro pub has a very different vibe to a town gastro pub.

For the former I'd probably go for nice jeans, oversized sweatshirt glam
acessories and either suede clogs or Adidas samba trainers.

For the latter I'd go for high waisted wide leg trousers with a kitten heal and tucked in top.

I love the clothes/style of Dilly on sort out your life. She looks glam without being over dressed.

Blankscreen · 20/10/2023 00:04

I really like that Bettina dress, that could be very versatile.

Kat1981111 · 20/10/2023 03:18

Is it me or are christmas meals getting expensive. A local carvery is like £7 per person in my local pub. JUST add pigs in blanket for Christmas and its like £56 per person!!!! Rip off.....gets me how people are willing to pay this...gone are the days when family meals at home at Christmas was magical....

Graciebobcat · 20/10/2023 07:42

For even a fancy gastropub people will be casually dressed. Jeans, nice top, nice boots I'd say.

Graciebobcat · 20/10/2023 07:47

Personally I'd go more for a jeans, leather jacket and boots look than sequinned top.

But there’s variety in casual dressing, @Graciebobcat.

I don’t think millions and millions of women are all obliged to agree to wear exactly the same outfit at the pub this weekend?

I think some posters can't imagine anything different from what they themselves wear. Someone said she couldn't imagine wearing the Joannie dresses to a pub- that type of dress is completely normal round where I am and gastro pubs in my area. Although I suppose that poster is just saying what she might wear- not , as others have said, nobody would ever wear the dresses.

That jeans and leather jacket combo is every day clothes- perfect for going to the supermarket in. No reason why you couldn't wear the same clothes to then go to the pub of course, but it's not in the least bit dressed up.

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 20/10/2023 08:37

currently loving this look…. Never too early for sequins

Sure, but I was trying to suggest what might be appropriate for someone who doesn't go out much, has lost confidence in their ability to choose nice clothes - hence asking on here and wants to look nice without sticking out like a sore thumb or a try hard fashion victim.

I think my suggestion may go down better at the pub and the OP may feel more comfortable than going in fancy dress as Robin from Ghosts, a character from Goodnight Sweetheart or Margot Leadbetter.

Fleetress · 20/10/2023 09:28

Nope! You’re definitely saying any variation from what you’d wear is absolutely, definitely weird and only worn by ‘fashion victims’ or 70’s housewives.

But you don’t seem alone in that attitude! 🤷🏽‍♀️

Graciebobcat · 20/10/2023 09:34

No, I'm suggesting that if the OP is looking at denim skirts and jeans then a fur gilet, 1940s vintage or 1970s floral dress is probably not really her thing.

Style and beauty is supposed to be about suggesting what posters might like based on the information they have given, not a personal crusade about yak based clothing. Plus thinking about what the weather is like in most of the UK this weekend, it's wet but not that cold, and a furry suit is the worst fucking suggestion this side of Svalbard.

Graciebobcat · 20/10/2023 09:38

I really like all of @tensmumllaf 's suggestions, @Cocoadream

I've just bought this. I'm a busty size 12 and a small was perfect. It's long on me at 5'4" but wearable. I know I'm going to get loads of wear out of it this winter.

Well you are saying that. You could have just said "the gilet, etc, might be out of the OP's comfort zone"- rather than what you've actually said.

I didn't like the gilets on first look, but you know I didn't know they even existed and on a second and third look at least one of them would go well as an extra layer for me. I'm not the OP, but ideas are open to anyone.

This made me laugh 😂

I really like the denim skirt and jumper, OP, and think they'd be nice with chelsea boots and very versatile for other occasions. I'd wear something like a cord dress or a relaxed shirt dress I think. I take any opportunity to wear a dress as in day to day life (cold but casual office/wfh/days with toddler), I tend to wear jeans/leggings in autumn/winter/spring. Also a casual dress doesn't require finding the right top (plus tucking/untucking/is it the right length/does it look bulky etc) and is so easy to sling on but looks like you've made a bit of effort. I also love the anthropologie dress upthread.
