Jeans help - hungry bum

Not some weird troll thing. I’m having a crisis of confidence in my middle age!

I just got some new jeans that are perfect from the front but I’ve just looked at my bum and it seems that it (my bum) eats jeans. I’ve now tried on the other jeans from my wardrobe and they are all pretty much the same. The best way I can describe it is that the seam down the middle of the back disappears into my bum much higher than it looks like it should. I’ve cautiously tried to google what a bum should look like in jeans but a) I’m nervous of what I might google and b) I’m pretty sure the models tip their hips get a better photo.
Does this make any sense to anyone? Or can anyone reassure me that no one is looking and/or it looks ok when you aren’t static. I am reluctant to upload a photo of my hungry bum to the internet!
It’s taken me many years to spot this 😭

No 😁 is there anyway you can take a pic?

Deliadidit · 18/10/2023 16:34

Sorry / I just realised that sounds a bit Pervy! 😆

MrsRetriever · 18/10/2023 16:38

I think a lot of brands just cut most of their styles like that now. Same with leggings - rare to find anything without a ruched arse now

Devilsmommy · 18/10/2023 16:43

What style are you wearing, maybe a looser fit wouldn't be as bad? This is why I don't wear tight jeans, this absolutely would happen to me😆

Does a bit 😂

All relaxed styles such as barrel leg and boyfriend. It may be my body type as I have a reasonably small waist, but I tried on the larger size and they are too big everywhere no just the waist and lose their shape/style.

Ok, I’m being brave… they are dark jeans to hard to see well. Orange arrow is where the seam disappears, green arrow is where I feel like it should disappear.
sorry about the filthy mirror

A 'hungry bum' is a sign your jeans are too small for you.

Tanaqui · 18/10/2023 18:21

They don't look too small for you. Are you (apologies) slightly older? My bum is sliding down my legs now I'm in my fifties, despite running and squats! I'm not sure I want to look at my rear view

Ollybob · 18/10/2023 18:22

Thicker jeans? Stiffer fabric should mean it doesn't get the chance to tuck in.
I'd think the thinner, stretch/legging types would cause this issue more.
Now I'm afraid to check my own bum in jeans! 😂

Thighdentitycrisis · 18/10/2023 18:26

Are they high waisted ?

I have a flat and widish bum (blokes bum) and find high waisted look abit like that

prefer mid rise

TheLonelyGoatTurd · 18/10/2023 18:29

Are they too big, so there's spare fabric looking for a home? Are you wearing sturdy pants to gatekeep? A thong is just inviting trouble.

usernamenotaccepted · 18/10/2023 18:37

That happens to me if jeans are too small, especially high waisted ones. Hungry bum is exactly the right way to describe it!

Thinkle · 18/10/2023 20:01

Thank you all. Lots of theories from too big to too small. The jeans are barrel leg and quite thick denim. I do think they fit me ok, I’ll upload a front photo. The bigger size are definitely too big. I think @Tanaqui might have it, I am getting older and my bottom is probably on the slide 😞
I love everything else about the jeans and as all my jeans over varying cuts and sizes do this I think the problem is my bum and something I’ll have to live with.

coxesorangepippin · 18/10/2023 21:13

Love the arrows, btw 😄

The Sewing Bee judges mentioned ‘hungry bum’ several times in the context of jumpsuits - I think it’s when the top half of the garment is too short so when the wearer pulls the sleeves over their shoulders, etc and pulls the jumpsuit taut it rides up the bum - and vice versa if it’s too long it would be baggy at the bum. Anyone with better recall please clarify this…

Seems like this measurement would be less critical with trousers/jeans vs a jumpsuit but you could try something in a tall range or has a higher rise. You might have a longer torso/waist than average.

Jantlet · 19/10/2023 07:06

You may have a long torso so need a longer rise.

Being that shape is quite literally a pain in the arse.

RavingStone · 19/10/2023 13:23

I have this problem a bit in the sense that I'm tall and also my waist is higher than manufacturers think it should be. I need to wear high rise because of my shape, but lots of jeans that call themselves high rise do not come up as far as my actual waist.

I really wish manufacturers would list the rise measurement and offer different rises. It's far more important than length, imo, because too long jeans can be hemmed and too short jeans can be worn as ankle grazers, but we can't change the shape of our hips/ waist.

That said, from the picture your jeans look great from both angles!

Thinkle · 19/10/2023 19:02

Thank you for all your thoughts, given this happens with all styles I own I think I might have a slightly long slightly aging body and I’m doomed to have a hungry bum.
@RavingStone thank you for the compliment it has helped my decision to keep the jeans

Pandamood · 21/03/2025 00:23

This happens to me too, I know its because I have hip dips and also because If I were to gain weight I would have a 🔻shape. My legs dont gain mass or weight when I work out. So in turn big waist/ torso and small/ narrow hips would cause this.

willowstar · 21/03/2025 18:56

I lost a lot of weight and my bum is now droopy and there is a lot of excess skin sort of below it. I am 51. My bum looks like yours in my jeans, all of which fit well on waist etc...it is just my saggy older body.

Iloveeverycat · 21/03/2025 19:24

Do you where a thong. Will wearing normal knickers help

okydokethen · 21/03/2025 19:41

Massive pants might help? Pulling them slightly lower on the hip might too
