Just looking for recommendations

The absolute collagen comes up on my SM a lot but the reviews are very mixed and £66 pm is not really ideal

TIA

I absolutely know that it’s not practical for everyone, but if you can, make your own bone broth - from all different kind of bones. It’s the best and most nutritious form of collagen . It’s so much more cheaper, than buying collagen supplements. Yes, for sure, there are many amazing collagen supplements out there, but they are so much more expensive from what you can make yourself.

Do you have any more info on this? I have a delicious recipe for chicken tea and I'd make it more often if it saved me taking a supplement!

Isn't collagen just digested like other proteins? So broken down to amino acid building blocks? I'm curious how it would work.

This is some interesting discussion on that point:

They're all awful - I can tolerate the powder in the first picture in my coffee but only just, still makes me feel queasy - can't buy it again, too queasy

The second picture, the liquid tastes revolting - I can't drink it in anything and drinking it on its own makes me actually throw it up

I think this is the fifth types I've had, I've NEVER re-bought one

It’s as simple as boiling the chicken carcass, after the Sunday roast. Just add a bit of seasoning, if you want, - a bit of salt, pepper, some bay leaves for example, I add some dry mushrooms for greater depth in taste. I then would bring that to a gentle rolling boil, for around an 1.5-2 hours, and it’s done. I also buy beef marrow bones, but probably boil these for around 5-6 hours, again adding any seasoning you like, on a gentle roll. They key thing here is to make sure that you continually remove the gunk that forms, when it all starts boiling to ensure the clarity of the broth. Finally, when boiling any kind of bones, always adds some vinegar, to draw out as much of the minerals, from the bones, as possible. For each, you can make a batch, for a couple of days, put it in the fridge and drink a cup or 2 as you go. It may sound a bit complicated, but it’s not, and it’s so much cheaper than buying supplements, many of which are excellent, but a lot more pricey than the home made stuff.

That's really interesting, thank you.

I take Bare Biology powder. Bought for knees. Minimal improvement on knees but receding hairline has filled in, nails are strong, skin much improved. Did not expect that. Been taking for a year now. Wouldn't be without it.

poppym12 · 02/11/2023 09:08

I've been vegetarian for over 30 years but I feel so crap these days that I'm thinking of trying collagen.

I've been miserable for years with thinning hair but I'm finding the joint pain (and skin dryness/dullness) horrible.

I started taking nourkrin and there's something marine in that but I think I need something extra.

I think I'd prefer marine to bovine (which is best for hair?) but overwhelmed with the amount on the market.

Can anyone recommend a collagen which might help thinning hair and joint problems please?

Doingitsolo2023 · 02/11/2023 09:16

@TomAllenWife I have the bovine and marine from Hunter Gather and have a spoon of each, each day. I read on Hunter Gather Instagram (I think) that they recommended you did that if you weren't sure which you would benefit most from.

Doingitsolo2023 · 02/11/2023 09:18

@poppym12 Have a look at the Hunter Gather bovine or marine. I take both in my morning coffee (spoon of each). Its been about 4 months and my hair and nails are both noticeable better. If you look on their Instagram they usually have a 25% code off for new people.

Ohwhatadag · 02/11/2023 14:06

I take marine collagen from Normal. I have no idea if it working as i started 3 weeks ago. But I found taking it in miso soup is great. No test at all and it makes me drink miso, which i like and is good for you in itself.

Tatapie · 03/11/2023 07:34

Boots marine tablets. No taste! Might not be as effective idk

Minttee · 03/11/2023 08:28

I was thinking of taking collagen but read that if you are prone to kidney stones not to take it. Has anyone else heard that? I really don't want kidney stones again!

Have you tried Ancient and Brave True collagen powder? I tried about 4 others before finding this one, and it honestly is totally tasteless and dissolves in a hot drink. The worst one I tried was from amazon, all the reviews were great, but it tasted revolting and wouldn't dissolve.

Jewelspun · 03/11/2023 13:10

I'm a vegetarian and have tried a few vegan ones but this is the nicest flavour.
I like to try things for six months and I'm at the end of my third month.

Have t really noticed any difference.

What makes a huge difference to my skin is Vaseline.

Isthatarealname · 03/11/2023 13:14

I've been taking a collagen powder in my morning coffee from bulk for about 6 weeks or so. Cant taste it at all. To be honest I didn't really think there was much difference but then I went to my botox lady and she said how good my skin is looking at the moment. Should have taken before/afters

ReverendBlueJeans · 03/11/2023 13:22

I take this:
www.healthspan.co.uk/super-strength-marine-collagen-complex/
It's type I and II. More affordable than many others. Can't say I've noticed much benefit for my skin tbh but I do feel it's helped with osteoarthritis.

RedderThanABeet · 03/11/2023 13:28

@LaurieFairyCake another one saying Ancient and Brave powder, I was really worried about how it would taste but honestly I cannot taste it at all, I have added it to tea and coffee. I have been taking it for a month and ordered some refills for the glass jar. Mine is the bovine one.

FlamMabel · 03/11/2023 19:27

I would love to hear more about the vaseline comment please! What exactly are you doing with it and when?

bellac11 · 03/11/2023 19:40

I use this one, when I needed to use lots of it as a protein powder (its not a full protein) my skin was really soft and as I use less and less of it as more of my protein is coming from food now, I notice that my skin isnt quite as good

How long does it take to have a noticeable effect on hair thickness? I’m losing hair and it’s thinner than ever (I’ve always had very done hair) so I need to do as much as I can

This is very helpful. I didn't know about the vinegar. I usually brown the bones in the oven first before boiling them for taste but I dont think that affects the amount of collagen. The other thing is, it's the jelly bit of the result that contains the collagen (the stuff on the top once cooled that isn't fat) so don't scoop it off!

jillies · 03/11/2023 20:17

There's not enough research, and scientific evidence, to say that taking collagen like this helps. I wouldn't waste my time, personally.

wited · 03/11/2023 20:21

Yep. Love it. My achy joints are so much better and my hair and nails thicker too.

I get reverse life liquid. It's not terrible, tastes like berries with a slightly weird aftertaste.

I've been on it for a year and won't stop now.

I think around 6 months or so. I’ve been taking it since March and it was a month or two ago that I really noticed as I straighten my hair and usually do it in sections, the top layer and the bottom, but I’ve needed to add in a middle section too. I recommend taking liquid chlorophyll as well for hair growth.

I shall! Is there a particular brand or dose for the chlorophyll that you’d recommend please?
