Using gel polish over split nail

One of my nails is growing a vertical split from where it’s been filed too thin by a nail drill. I’m keeping my nails very short and filing them as smooth as possible to prevent catches, but the split on my index finger keeps growing as the nail is so thin and weak. Would it be advisable to use gel polish on top to strengthen and protect it until it’s grown out? Or is there something else I can do to protect it? Been using OPI nail envy and keeping covered with a plaster but the split is still growing due to daily activities putting pressure on the end of the nail

Have you tried a bit of nail glue and a tiny clipping from a tea bag? You can add that and file it down gently to smooth then put a single coat of gel/ builder gel and that will protect it.

This will only work if it's a split in the length, not over the nail bed as you don't won't to risk any infection.

Unfortunately the split goes into the nail bed which is why I’m not sure what’s best to do. I need to try and protect and strengthen it while it grows out but don’t want to cause infection or make things worse

Ooh sorry I wouldn't put anything over that until it grows down, just in case. Hope it's not too sore!
