Having my hair coloured at the hairdressers for the first time - what to ask for

My natural hair colour is a light mousey brown (in hairdressers' terms it's probably classed as a dark blonde), I got bored of it earlier this year and I'm starting to get my first few grey hairs so I dyed it slightly darker which I liked but it ends up going really brassy and shines orange in the light despite using blue shampoo.

I want to go to the hairdressers to have it coloured, I want something very subtle to just enhance it as I feel like my natural hair colour is very blah and boring. However, I'm nervous of highlights as I have visions of blonde stripes in my hair. I wear my hair straight a lot so it would be quite visible. I've never been to a hairdressers before, as all my life I've had my haircut by a family friend in my own home.

I like these pictures, what would I need to ask for at the hairdressers to acheive this? Also, as my hair is a light brown I feel like I could go either way and have it darker or lighter, how will I know which would suit me best? I have pale, cool-toned skin with blue eyes. Is this something that an average hairdresser can do, or do they tend to be more heavy handed with the highlights?

I would show the hairdresser those pictures and ask them to do that for you.

Sometimes online hair photos will detail the colours used, so maybe look for some of those?

My hairdresser is very good at identifying colours used.

There are a couple of apps too, if you have a smartphone, where you can upload your photo and change your hairstyle/colour, to give you an idea of what you might look like.

Book a consultation first, a week or so ahead, and say everything you’ve said here.

Thank you both. I'll definitely take along pictures and will ring them and ask for a consultation.
