20 year old velvet coat, over £100 at the time, which seemed a lot. Still in great condition, worn mainly for smart evenings. £250 wedding dress 10 years ago.

Black leather mini skirt, cost £100 about 15 years ago. It was a bit on the tight side when I bought it, and I’ve been getting bigger ever since!

@EverythingYouDoIsaBalloon

I have a regular search on seasalt coats on ebay (I want a grey plant hunter) and they sell like hot cakes -loads of bids, watchers etc.

and not for peanuts, you'll make ok money back if you list.

Good to hear! I keep meaning to list it, must get my finger out and actually do it.

A Ralph Lauren maxi coat bought by DH on the first day of Harrods sale in the 1990s. It was reduced to about £800 and I paid to get the sleeves altered locally.
I parked in our village on the road, opened the door to get out and somehow tripped over the hem flat on my face into the oncoming traffic. How I didn’t get run over I’ll never know! I never wore it again
It’s still hanging up in the wardrobe as a reminder to never park in the road again!!

Please wear all your nice things, life’s to short to keep them hidden away!

A Mulberry bag I've worn once before lockdown when I commuted and had a desktop. Now, I mostly wfh and have a laptop, so I need an additional laptop bag, which ruins the look.

Would anyone recommend Vinted for selling bags?

Cathbrownlow · 05/04/2024 08:42

To my shame, I have a whole stash of expensive clothes that I don't wear for complicated reasons. I have a bit of a hoarder mentality due, I think, to a marriage where I was financially abused and due to a childhood where I was told I wasn't worth anything decent.

I have so many dresses, coats, bags and shoes from Toast. I also have some Max Mara dresses and bags. Some other stuff too.

I really want to start gradually wearing the stuff. It is so silly not to. Perhaps on this thread we could be a support group, like the weight loss threads?

Oh my gosh WEAR THEM! Please.

I remember a colleague telling me her mother died and she had to clear her wardrobe after her death. So many unworn things with the label on being saved for best. Best never came. Wear them!

I couldn't agree more. I acquired a ridiculously expensive handbag last week and once the weather improves (it has a non-waterproof element) I will use it all the time as it's quite practical as well as beautiful.

There are unlikely to be many more "best" occasions in my life - no children to see married, no reason to get a Royal Garden Party invitation etc - so every day will be "best" from now on.

I would recommend Vinted, but you'll have to wait for a bit to get a price near to the price you want for the bag. You'll get an awful lot of people offering you peanuts, but so long as you go in for the long haul, it will sell in the end at a price you want.

These all sound gorgeous, post pictures! i agree you should all wear them - I am guilty of keeping things and not sure when the occasion would be.

I have a black lacy sheath D&G dress i bought at a seconds sale which is lovely but Ivw never had the right occasion to wear

SoundTheSirens · 05/04/2024 08:59

Usually nothing, partly because I don't keep things "for best" and partly because I usually buy second-hand, but right now I have a Hobbes dress that is unworn - but only because I've bought it for a wedding next month.

I've got an absolutely beautiful, but useless real fur coat, given to me by DM, and given to her by a billionaire, in the 70s.

It's so heavy, and hot, and people will just chuck paint at you, so completely unwearable. I darent sell it anywhere like eBay because a paint thrower type will buy it just to cut a hole in it and return it "damaged."

I just don't know what to do with it. Personal feelings on fur aside, it's from an era when fur was fine, and it's about as high quality you can get. Ideas would be gratefully received on the best way to sell?

Ac friend was telling me she has one too. Apparently film companies buy them. Might be worth looking in to
