I'd like a brightish red lipstick to wear on my very occasional nights out but haven't got a clue where to start!

I've got very fair freckly skin, a pinky complexion, with very dark brown hair.

Anyone got any good suggestions?? I'm totally overwhelmed with the options going into John Lewis etc!

Chanel Gabrielle is lovely, if you fancy treating yourself.

For a cheaper option Mac Ruby woo is excellent. It became extremely popular and when there are so many red lipsticks about then that surely speaks for how good it is.

For something a bit more expensive then Rouge Dior is also lovely.

Ruby woo or Russian Red by MAC! Love both, I find that they both work for me (similar skin/hair combo)

MAC Ruby Woo

Dior 999!. I chose it because I didn't know where to start with choosing a red and they claim it suits everyone because of the undertone. It's amazing and I always get compliments.

Cotswoldmama · 14/10/2023 07:57

Another vote for ruby woo, it suits all skin tones you can't go wrong!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/10/2023 07:57

Ruby Woo is a great colour and has real staying power, but it is very dry and matte. These days I prefer a creamy one and just reapply.

AH37 · 14/10/2023 11:07

Great thanks all that's brilliant- will start with Mac ruby woo!

Mac Locked Kiss Ink in ruby true is also a lovely blue red and a good long wear lip pie.
Nars Air Matte in Dragon Girl is raspberry red while Power Trip is a dark red. Really comfortable formula to wear.

I’d recommend looking at some Korean lip tints. Peripera Ink Velvet no.3 Red Only is a beautiful colour and comfortable formula.
Fenty Poutsicle in Strawberry Sangria is a lovely cherry/strawberry red.

Lancôme Ruby star (314)

Buy from eBay, they often have smaller testers unused, easy to try out Mac, Dior etc. without paying ~£25

Sparkletastic · 14/10/2023 15:53

Ruby Woo is rather dry and not the universally flattering red that it's pimped as. I'm pale and freckly and this looks great

Do Mac still do their mini ones for about a tenner? Maybe worth a shot to see how you get on with it.

PatriciaHolm · 14/10/2023 17:14

Try it on using the feature on the Mac website! It's very clever

Sounds like you’re a cool tone? So find a red lipstick that’s blue based rather than orange based. I don’t know how much you’d want to spend but 858 Royal rouge red lipstick Rouge Allure L’Extrait by Chanel is an amazing colour.

Bobbi Brown lipsticks are lovely too.

I’d head to the beauty counters after establishing whether you’re cool or warm toned and asking for advice. Good luck!

Velvet ribbon by Lisa Eldridge is nice.
