Black nails under gel polish

Has anyone had this before? Have had polish on longer than should have but removed last night and my two big toes are black, one worse than the other. Is this discolouration from the gel polish? How do I remove, does it have to grow out or could I file it off?

I haven't had this but my nail tech has said leaving gel on too long can cause a fungal infection -- basically the gel starts to lift and bacteria etc gets between the gel and nail. Could it be that? You might need to get a treatment from the pharmacy - pharmacist can advise. My only other thought is could it be a bruise or blood under your nail - is it sore? Hope it gets better soon!

Actually, yes. The only time I had professional gel pedicure, I got black big toe. I have no clue what caused it but I am not tempted to do it again.

Oh forgot to add, I did not damage the nail in any way and it wasn't painful when it was black.

Thanks for the replies. I had wondered was it an infection. They aren't sore now. Although I had been on holidays and walked lots so wonder could it have been bruised from then. My feet were very sore at the time and I think my toes were too
