Black tie do in November. Arms arent my best feature..does this need a wrap and if so do I go bright as a contrast or silver? Or black?

What wrap with this dress?

i would be picking out the cream/ white of the flower, but that’s as much to do with my ginger/ pale skin/ autumn colouring, as the dress, so which would look best against your complexion?

Azaeleasinbloom · 09/10/2023 18:09

Lovely dress

NatashaDancing · 09/10/2023 18:37

Silver or black.

There will probably be a lot of posters along soon to tell you wraps are "so dated" which is irrelevant if that's what you want.

My own view is that wraps can be useful just to wrap round you if it's cold sitting in a church or hanging around for photos or getting to and from a venue. They don't strike me as a practical solution for covering your arms for the whole evening at a black tie event.

Maybe a short jacket like this -

I found this at John Lewis & Partners. What do you think? https://www.johnlewis.com/phase-eight-zoelle-bow-detail-jacket/p109263350?tmad=c&tmcampid=7&sshare=jlappioss_Y29tLmFwcGxlLlVJS2l0LmFjdGl2aXR5LkNvcHlUb1Bhc3RlYm9hcmQ=

Thanks all. I have a sallow complexion with green eyes...and short burgundy hair!
I know wraps and scarves can be a bit fiddly, but the drape also helps disguise a tummy by being a bit flowy,IYSWIM, rather than a short jacket

I'd go for a jacket that you don't mind wearing all evening or find another dress if you want your arms covered. Wraps are a pain, and never look great imo - and I disagree that a wrap will help disguise a tummy.

I agree on all counts.

If you're going to wear that dress it needs a black velvet or black silk or possibly deep raspberry or deep purple, loose fitting, unbuttoned jacket which comes to at least thigh length or to the same length as dress or within an inch of the hem of the dresss (can't tell from picture but guessing ing it's around knee length?)

I have an exact picture in mind of the jacket but can't find one. The closest was this Brora one.

Brora silk jacket

If the dress were plain black you could put a 100 Stars Kimono over it, but that won't work with a patterned dress. Something this shape and length but in plain silk or velvet would work (but tbh by the time you've bought something that fits that bill you'd be as well buying another dress)

M&S usually do a couple of black velvet jackets in the run up to Christmas party season. Might be worth a look?

If it's full length the jacket can be shorter. The Brora velvet cardigan is the right shape but not sure about the colour.

French Connection draped jacket - pretty inoffensive and not £££.

Next sheer black kimono thing - might be too 'busy' though.

Too busy. It would be perfect without the devoré pattern.

AnneKipankitoo · 09/10/2023 20:55

Different dress ?
If you are so self conscious about your arms …

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/10/2023 20:58

Yes, I think so - but otherwise looks as if it could have worked.

Another quick google threw this up, which might be horrific but also might just be small and subtle enough to maybe be worth a look? Roman bolero thing It would perform the same job as a wrap whilst being less of a faff maybe.

Looking at other dresses too but liked the simplicity of this one,and the fit. Its also second hand from Ebay as I like to reuse and recycle.
Lots of great options though so thanks all

I think a wrap rarely does what you think it will do in concealing the elements you dislike, but rather draws your attention to it.
