Hello again to everyone from the last thread and welcome to anyone who enjoys talking about this aesthetic .. and if you have photos to share even better!

We've been discussing woollen jumpers, tweed skirts and jackets (with and without elbow patches), flannel trousers, fair isle tank tops, leather boots, culottes, berets and many other appealing garments, and more recently novels, poetry, libraries in general and even home decor with a DA vibe. Plus tortoiseshell spectacles and lorgnettes. I don't think we've touched on DA hairstyles yet although I've been giving that some thought ..

A DA quote I came across the other day: "I declare after all, there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library." (P&P of course)

If curling up in a wing-backed armchair in front of a log fire, with candles flickering, sipping tea from a china mug while reading your Jane Austen or Bronte novel sounds appealing, this thread might be for you. Or if you just like the clothes - that works too.

Our first thread below:

And where to find it? This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trous...

@Mirabai I can't do links because I'm a tech dinosaur but I took a screenshot if that's any good to you?

@RedLem0nade I love that outfit - brown tights and boots will be perfect.

Merryhobnobs · 11/10/2023 18:43

I have that Aran scarf in a maroon colour. Have mitts and a bobble hat to match. I definitely don't suit berets alas!

I have some excellent vinted items to show once I have my kids in bed. My eldest is poorly so could be a wee while.

helenahandcart78 · 11/10/2023 18:46

Outfit for today (even though I was only out of the house for about an hour tops 😂):

Russet red lamb's wool jumper, cream and black checked felt culottes, black brogues. Accessorised with a large bronze pendant, bronze hoop earrings, and my new scarf. Still working up the courage to wear the beret, but it's still too mild here for headgear anyway. Although the temperature is definitely dropping (yay!)

helenahandcart78 · 11/10/2023 18:48

@Merryhobnobs, the scarf is lovely - soft and not scratchy at all. Wishing your eldest a speedy recovery!

Amazing. Right, we can meet there for the AGM, but maybe not stay over... it's a pricey place!

We'll have a very grand AGM there and then nip round the corner to the Travel Lodge 🤣

I've been to the Witchery once it was lovely. Dh is Scottish and his parents live on the outskirts of Edinburgh so we're often there. I agree definite DA vibe .

I've just had a wee mooch in Penzance - treated myself to some Nordic socks and a Lambswool burgundy sleeveless jumper. , I did spot a vintage leather satchel (top shop ) in the window of one of the many charity shops £9.99 . Tempted but I have too many bags .

Ooh but that vintage bag sounds gorgeous! I couldn't have restrained myself 😂

On the subject of books can I recommend two authors, you probably are familiar with them but just in case. Thomas Hardy & E.M.Forster.
Then there’s of course always Dickens

Notsosecrethistory · 11/10/2023 19:18

@RedLem0nade I'm actually on the mango site looking at that skirt now, how short is it? I'm assuming the model is significantly taller than me

Forster was brilliant, and very moral.
He said 'only connect'.....excellent advice, and we are.

Just catching up.

Fabulously atmospheric thread thus far and wonderful conversations. Brava to all contributors 👏🏻

I have acquired a lovely short skirt and cosy cardi from Mango today. Going to team with thick dark brown tights and my beloved Clark’s Orinoco stompy boots (but of course).

I’m sure I have a beret buried somewhere and after seeing yours @helenahandcart78 I’m getting the urge to dig for it. It’s a beaut! Love the scarf too.

Currently sitting in my library reading Northanger Abbey which is a little bit DA even if laughingly so😊

Oh goodness, I have fallen in love with this cardi & skirt combo. This thread is costing me a small fortune <sighs happily>

So we're decided, The Witchery for our AGM and afternoon tea. But we'll book a huge AirBnB in a rambling, Victorian house on one of the cobbled back streets in Edinburgh for our gothic themed sleepover. Ghost stories, mulled wine and brushed cotton night dresses, yes?

@triggers34 school girl error. Surely you know that the optimum number of bags is every bag you own + just one more???

Love that formula 'n+1' - applies to leather notebooks and cats as well, oddly enough...

RedLem0nade · 11/10/2023 20:01

@Notsosecrethistory it’s pretty short.

Having done the “bending-over-in-front-of-mirror” test my undergarments remain concealed- just. And I’m only 5 foot and a bit (yes, that bit is very important to me).

Thankfully thick tights and flat boots make any skirt perfectly acceptable. At least they do in my head🤗 I always think of thick tights as being basically the same as leggings.

RedLem0nade · 11/10/2023 20:02

@Bookist sign me up for that AGM!! You had me at mulled wine.

It's pretty much the Universal Formula, I find.

<gets suitably academic note book and starts list>

I do make a magnificent mulled wine, if I say so myself. Real cinnamon sticks and candied orange peel.

evtheria · 11/10/2023 20:06

I mean this in the most flattering way possible (?!) 🤣 but I've got this scene/image in my mind, regarding our AGM.
At the very least, we would look like a fabulous and secret time-travelling society (we've got vintage DA, 1970s DA, modern urban DA...) plotting a murder. Which is totally a look I endorse.

evtheria · 11/10/2023 20:06

The image in question!

RedLem0nade · 11/10/2023 20:09

Hahahaha!

Anjelica Huston is a frickin legend though. We should definitely invite her.

Coniferhedge · 11/10/2023 20:25

Sorry if this has been mentioned as not read the full thread, but has anyone purchased from Linennaive? I’m quite taken by this dress. Not so much the blouse, but I do love the dress.

helenahandcart78 · 11/10/2023 20:30

I'm in for the AGM too - sounds joyful! I think we should invite Helena Bonham Carter. She'd love it. But she'd probably drink all the mulled wine. Hmmm.

And shoes. And fabric.
