Hello again to everyone from the last thread and welcome to anyone who enjoys talking about this aesthetic .. and if you have photos to share even better!

We've been discussing woollen jumpers, tweed skirts and jackets (with and without elbow patches), flannel trousers, fair isle tank tops, leather boots, culottes, berets and many other appealing garments, and more recently novels, poetry, libraries in general and even home decor with a DA vibe. Plus tortoiseshell spectacles and lorgnettes. I don't think we've touched on DA hairstyles yet although I've been giving that some thought ..

A DA quote I came across the other day: "I declare after all, there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library." (P&P of course)

If curling up in a wing-backed armchair in front of a log fire, with candles flickering, sipping tea from a china mug while reading your Jane Austen or Bronte novel sounds appealing, this thread might be for you. Or if you just like the clothes - that works too.

Our first thread below:

And where to find it? This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trous...

That outfit is perfection. Anyone else feel that Cornwall is the spiritual home of Dark Academia?

Oh gosh...I hope so; I'm Cornish, and now live here again.

Anyone else feel that Cornwall is the spiritual home of Dark Academia?

In a kind of Poldark way but more so Yorkshire and Oxford and Cambridge for me.

Oh yes, most definitely Yorkshire. Howarth and Whitby are the quintessential Dark Academia haunts. And of course, the Isle of Sky.

MoltenLasagne · 10/10/2023 22:03

Yorkshire is the home of Dark Academia for me. I grew up reading The Secret Garden and The Railway Children and progressed onto the Brontes. We went on a school trip to Haworth and I vowed to move here, and still don't regret it!
I'd also completely forgotten about the Whitby series too - I had the set for a birthday present! @evtheria thank you for the reminder!

My lovely wool fabric has arrived but I've mismeasured the width for culottes so I think it will have to be a skirt instead. I'm desperate to start sewing but really must finish at least one of my current projects first.

I do love that Arya dress @teawamutu Unfortunately wouldn't suit me at all, but I love different constructions. Have you seen the origami blouses? I am determined to make some one day.

@BonjourCrisette
ps Both of us also dislike tomatoes! And mayo! But we happily partake in "milk and cake" time.

I am a firm fan of tomatoes and mayo but milk and cake are definitely not my thing! So I am not as much Harriet as I would like to be. Will have to look up the series.

Yorkshire is very good but I'll cast a vote for Scotland: Universities, castles, turrets, spires, wynds, pends, closes, cobblestones, crags, tartan, whisky, dormant volcanoes, Highlands, heather and haar, Michelle Gomez...

triggers34 · 11/10/2023 06:09

@Divebar2021 sorry my phone ran out of power to reply , the charity shop is Cornwall hospice I believe and maybe new. It was on a slight slope in the middle of town. I bought a tapestry wall hanging. I still can't find my book so bought it on my kindle instead.

Im away with some friends to explore seawater pools, I've only managed 1 -priest cove at Cape Cornwall. The others are more into cold water swimming than me plus Dh would be bored . I love Cornwall.

@teawamutu I really like the dress pattern. I can't sew but I'm keen to learn, I also would like to be able to knit fair isle . I've taught myself crochet and how to knit socks so sewing is next on the list.

Yes. Edinburgh is the ultimate dark academia setting i think.

helenahandcart78 · 11/10/2023 09:03

I've never been to Edinburgh but from what I've seen on TV etc it definitely does have a DA feel.

I'd like to put in a vote for Dublin. Trinity College and St Stephen's Green in particular. You would definitely feel at home with a bagful of books, a bicycle and a beret!

Belfast city is unfortunately a bit of a hotch potch of architecture. And so many nasty 60s and 70s buildings have replaced the original turn of the century ornate masonry. But the University Quarter, with Queens, Botanic Gardens and the Ulster Museum, is more on brief.

Merryhobnobs · 11/10/2023 09:48

I suggest you have a Google and look at images of Aberdeen University and old Aberdeen. I took one step on the grounds and fell in love. The walk to uni was through a park and down cobbled streets surrounded by trees. Marischal college in Aberdeen which once was part of the uni is very dark academia gothic. On another note, look what popped into my phone feed this morning. https://collider.com/best-dark-academia-movies-and-television-series/

12 Best Dark Academia Movies and TV Series, Ranked

Dark academia has taken the online world by storm, with tweed blazers, horn-rimmed glasses, Gothic elements, and oftentimes, deviant self-discovery.

helenahandcart78 · 11/10/2023 10:25

@Merryhobnobs I'm making a list of those films/series! And of course Oscar Wilde is DA perfection. Tortured soul certainly.

Bookist · 11/10/2023 10:45

I haven't been to Edinburgh for years. I now feel the need to re-visit wearing my full Dark Academia regalia. I'm also feeling the urgent need to buy a duffle coat and a soft, college style scarf.

evtheria · 11/10/2023 10:48

If one of you buys this, please post an outfit photo 😍

That is beautiful! Absolutely dreamy 😍

Mirabai · 11/10/2023 11:25

Love that 😍 the waist is a bit too low for me or I would, it’s my size.

Bookist · 11/10/2023 12:23

Right so I've been researching a weekend break in Edinburgh and stumbled across a hotel called The Witchery! This, this is our spiritual home Dark Academics. We need to have our AGM here 😍😍😍

VisaWoes · 11/10/2023 13:05

I’ve had afternoon tea in the witchery. Amazing.

MoltenLasagne · 11/10/2023 13:19

Oh my gosh, I've just looked up The Witchery, it looks spectacular! I feel like I have new interior aspirations!

Notsosecrethistory · 11/10/2023 13:46

Amazing. Right, we can meet there for the AGM, but maybe not stay over... it's a pricey place!

triggers34 · 11/10/2023 14:25

I've been to the Witchery once it was lovely. Dh is Scottish and his parents live on the outskirts of Edinburgh so we're often there. I agree definite DA vibe .

I've just had a wee mooch in Penzance - treated myself to some Nordic socks and a Lambswool burgundy sleeveless jumper. , I did spot a vintage leather satchel (top shop ) in the window of one of the many charity shops £9.99 . Tempted but I have too many bags .

helenahandcart78 · 11/10/2023 14:45

My beret has arrived! Along with a nice scarf I couldn't resist... just need the weather to cooperate now so I can wear them!

Ooh they're lovely.

RedLem0nade · 11/10/2023 17:32

Just catching up.

Fabulously atmospheric thread thus far and wonderful conversations. Brava to all contributors 👏🏻

I have acquired a lovely short skirt and cosy cardi from Mango today. Going to team with thick dark brown tights and my beloved Clark’s Orinoco stompy boots (but of course).

I’m sure I have a beret buried somewhere and after seeing yours @helenahandcart78 I’m getting the urge to dig for it. It’s a beaut! Love the scarf too.

Currently sitting in my library reading Northanger Abbey which is a little bit DA even if laughingly so😊

Could you link which one you ordered as that’s a nice red. I can’t decide between burgundy or more of a berry red.
