Hello again to everyone from the last thread and welcome to anyone who enjoys talking about this aesthetic .. and if you have photos to share even better!

We've been discussing woollen jumpers, tweed skirts and jackets (with and without elbow patches), flannel trousers, fair isle tank tops, leather boots, culottes, berets and many other appealing garments, and more recently novels, poetry, libraries in general and even home decor with a DA vibe. Plus tortoiseshell spectacles and lorgnettes. I don't think we've touched on DA hairstyles yet although I've been giving that some thought ..

A DA quote I came across the other day: "I declare after all, there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library." (P&P of course)

If curling up in a wing-backed armchair in front of a log fire, with candles flickering, sipping tea from a china mug while reading your Jane Austen or Bronte novel sounds appealing, this thread might be for you. Or if you just like the clothes - that works too.

Oh fab, thank you @Ohwtfnow I like it, but I also know that I already have a perfectly good bag from fat face which looks like the attached. That pic looks like it is black leather but it's actually a rich dark brown. A shoulder bag rather than backpack. I fancied a change from it but not too sure I'm wasting money and it's actually just a nice bag.
So maybe I could get some opinions on which to choose? Stick with old bag or twist for the new one?

Wow those photos - especially the middle one on the second row, it looks so modern. It reminds me of one of my favourite Katharine Hepburn pics.

SqueakyDinosaur · 16/09/2024 07:55

@justkoko I always like to have a choice. What's stopping you? It looks like a very nice bag, so if you can afford it without affecting you in other, undesirable ways, I say go for it!

Justkoko · 16/09/2024 08:45

Haha, yeah, you're right. I think I might treat myself. Lovely shoes, bag and coat make me feel good.
I've also had another thread looking for some perfect loafers. Not found the right ones at the right price yet though. I do have dr martens adrian but they are feeling extra clunky these days. I don't want super light an slim ones, I want something weighted looking, but not as far as the super chunky ones go. And I'd like to buy good quality. Any suggestions welcome.

Notsosecrethistory · 16/09/2024 13:44

@Justkoko I've been looking at your loafer thread... I'm no help though, because I think I want some, but the chunkier the better! Did you like the DMs for a chunky option?

Re: the bag. If you can afford to do it, then go for it. I love the colour. It's very 'of the moment' but burgundy is always popular especially in autumn/winter - it's my favourite!

The weather here this morning has set me back on to my eternal side quest - a stylish, warm, waterproof coat. I have a trench coat and like it for this time of year, but honestly, I feel the cold so much more now... is it my age?!

Books: Susie Dent has written a fiction book - a mystery set in Oxford. It sounds right up our collective dark alley. 😆I do have a load of work to do, but I shall dig in as soon as possible.

SqueakyDinosaur · 16/09/2024 17:24

I like the Protected Species trenchcoats, and intend to buy one. I think I'll just bung an extra layer on under it!

Earlier in the thread a pp posted this

I'd love to make this but so many patterns are worked in the round and I just can't do the double pointed needle thing. I wish I could. This is perfect as it's not got a foldover brim adding bulk and it's soft and slouchy. Anyone know where I can find something like this but knit flat? I've tried ravelry and searching by construction type but it still brings up patterns for dbl pointed needles.

I love a cape. Just bagged myself a beautiful, autumnal brown tweed one: bargain from Ebay!

Another favourite is a washed-grey knitted one from Free People. That's my 'flying in comfort' item and it goes everywhere with me. Bit heavy but okay if worn in transit.

Beowulfa · 17/09/2024 12:12

Lovely green woolly hat above. My hair never looks like that in a hat though.

The Susie Dent crime novel got a kicking in the Private Eye review (limited actual crime plot) which is disappointing.

Notsosecrethistory · 17/09/2024 12:39

Oh really? I've seen only good reviews so far, oh well... I've got a day off soon, so I'll let you know 😅

Oh how lovely to see my fellow Dark Academians all back together again just as we emerge into the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness.

JaneJeffer · 17/09/2024 16:51

It's very sunny here Grin

evtheria · 17/09/2024 17:20

It is dark within our minds, dear Jane.
Also adjusts spectacles, despite not needing any.

*Edit: Mine is definitely full of fog, to be honest. Does wearing an air of constant distraction or slight bewilderment count as acessorizing?

Next month I'm having my library decorated in dark, moody blue to replace the boring old magnolia I've had since we moved here! Very excited.

evtheria · 17/09/2024 17:26

@SerafinasGoose That sounds beautiful! A lovely shaded reading lamp, a comfy chair... when do we all get our invites? Grin

JaneJeffer · 17/09/2024 17:28

Nature of the job! Ironic that I found this thread because of the book 'Dark Academia: How Universities Die ...' This thread has a much better vibe. NB. I don't believe in organizing books by spine colour. Or with the spines turned inward. Just why? How would you ever find the right title?

Open house! If you're ever in Yorkshire, give me a shout ...

JaneJeffer · 17/09/2024 17:52

I approve of your disorganisation. Much more interesting as far as I'm concerned Grin

It sounds gorgeous. Our study is decorated in a deep, stormy blue and it feels so rich and cosy. Also have two huge bookcases in there and the dark blue makes the colour of the book covers really pop.

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 17/09/2024 18:42

We used to have a dining room painted in midnight blue with a huge chandelier, and a grey marble fireplace.

I loved it.

CakeIsNotAvailable · 22/09/2024 18:41

I bought these beauties today! I thought of this thread - they feel very Dark Academia to me! (Ignore the pink chinos, which don't fit the aesthetic 😂)
