Hello again to everyone from the last thread and welcome to anyone who enjoys talking about this aesthetic .. and if you have photos to share even better!

We've been discussing woollen jumpers, tweed skirts and jackets (with and without elbow patches), flannel trousers, fair isle tank tops, leather boots, culottes, berets and many other appealing garments, and more recently novels, poetry, libraries in general and even home decor with a DA vibe. Plus tortoiseshell spectacles and lorgnettes. I don't think we've touched on DA hairstyles yet although I've been giving that some thought ..

A DA quote I came across the other day: "I declare after all, there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library." (P&P of course)

If curling up in a wing-backed armchair in front of a log fire, with candles flickering, sipping tea from a china mug while reading your Jane Austen or Bronte novel sounds appealing, this thread might be for you. Or if you just like the clothes - that works too.

Our first thread below:

And where to find it? This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trous...

Have you checked out eBay, Etsy etc?

Chrysanthemum5 · 08/01/2024 09:41

Not yet. In my head the liberty money is free because I don't notice it going out each month 😂

IndianSummer78 · 08/01/2024 22:24

I love the bag chrysanthemum.

I want liberty pyjamas.

worstofbothworlds · 08/01/2024 23:28

I also want Liberty pyjamas. I mainly wear woven bottoms with a t-shirt so I reckon I could sew pyjama shorts quite reasonably and just wear a baggy t-shirt.

TheDarrellRivers · 09/01/2024 04:58

@Divebar2021 🫣🤣🤣

TheDarrellRivers · 09/01/2024 05:01

@Chrysanthemum5
your bag is gorgeous! I keep putting off the Liberty drop. Now I’m super tempted.

With my smaller wardrobe I'm trying to be more 1930s with outfit care as well: wearing an apron when I'm cooking, hand washing woolens more frequently and dabbing spots rather than throwing everything into an enormous wash basket and it is clean weeks later.

Outfit care is a lovely phrase, and something I have always practised.
I even use soapwort for cleaning vintage fabrics, and read old household management books for tips.
A new....and modern...... tip from a tailor, is to spray smelly clothes with nest vodka. Buy the cheapest available. It works! Cheaper, and more environmentally friendly than dry cleaning.

Notsosecrethistory · 14/04/2024 10:03

Hello fellow DA Appreciators... As it's spring, and the sun is (finally) starting to peep out... I thought I'd bump this thread to see what in (our) world everyone was wearing?

Chrysanthemum5 · 14/04/2024 15:20

I bought this recently and love it - not sure it's the DA look but I feel amazing in it

SqueakyDinosaur · 14/04/2024 19:25

Oh, I wasn't aware of the V&A collection at Next - there are some stunning prints there!

Chrysanthemum5 · 14/04/2024 19:41

Yes the prints are gorgeous

Notsosecrethistory · 14/04/2024 20:35

Ooh I might have a nose through those... I find summer dressing a bit of nightmare tbh.

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 15/04/2024 07:40

Morning!

i have drifted from sartorial DA but very much wish to get back into it. I am away this week on a girly shopping trip / hen party so will focus my attention on possibilities!

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 15/04/2024 07:43

.... musing... might go for a more Agatha Christie as archaeologist look. Edwardian, linen shirts, pale long skirts.

Just wish I had the figure for it!

SqueakyDinosaur · 15/04/2024 12:56

Carey Mulligan in the film The Dig has some fabulous 1930s clothes, too.

TressiliansStone · 16/04/2024 10:49

Morning, morning. Lovely to see you all again. I trust we have all wintered well.

That V&A at Next collection is gorgeous! Alas I've spent all my money on copies of C18th letters, but oh my! Some of those prints are right up my alley.

I don't have anything sartorial to add, but I do have a book.

"The Wills of Thomas Bassandyne, and other printers, &c, in Edinburgh 1577–1687" in The Bannatyne miscellany, 1836.

The Inventories of Property, of every description, which occur in the
old Registers of Confirmed Testaments, furnish us with much curious information, which has not hitherto been made available to any considerable extent. In selecting from the Commissary Records of Edinburgh, the following Inventories and Wills of Scotish Printers and Booksellers, of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, it was conceived that the lists of books, and prices which they exhibit, might serve to throw some light on the state of the current literature of that period.

I saw it and thought of you.Grin

TressiliansStone · 16/04/2024 11:00

Also, an apology. Back in December I transcribed the money my hero had in his pocket c1754 as "£1-16[d]", which of course doesn't exist. It must be £1 16 shillings.

Yes yes, of course it doesn't matter in the real world. But I know you will understand when I say my error has been bugging me ever since...Wink

TressiliansStone · 21/04/2024 17:29

Oh my.

I was back on the Next site yearning for those V&A prints... and drifted onto these longline linen blazers... with linen trousers.

My question is, how many blue blazers does a woman who rarely leaves the house need? Blush

And is it more or fewer than her number of trilbies...?

stillhelenahandcart · 22/04/2024 18:25

Hello lovely people! I was on the original DA thread, then fell off the second one. I'd been hoping there would be a spring/summer discussion starting up so I'm delighted!

For what it's worth, I have decided to embrace bohemian summer academia this year. Possibly because of the incessant rain and wind 😔 . Spring in NI has been the most disappointing ever!

So, in complete denial of what's happening outside, I am channelling lots of floaty silk and linen fabrics, and layered elaborate jewellery (with a fleece over the top in the house because, god, it's still cold!! ☹️)

I am wearing linen wide legs or silk yoga style trousers. Light coloured brogues or tennis shoes. Once the weather gets better I've got brown leather gladiator sandals. Flat of course, as I can't do heels any more.

Thin fitted woollen jumpers with a loose fitting denim shirt or unstructured linen sleeveless tops with a khaki slim waisted military style jacket.

I'm still coveting a cricket jumper, a la Brideshead revisited, but haven't seen one yet.

This was long and rambly - sorry! I'm reading some interesting books but will save that for another time 😁

Mirabai · 22/04/2024 19:59

I have 2 purchases for the summer that I’m delighted with. Not sure if they’re technically dark academia but they’re dresses with a vintage kick. I got them both pre loved but in mint condition.

Lovely @Mirabai the second one is definitely my style!

worstofbothworlds · 23/04/2024 08:52

I'm still in cords and cashmere cardigans...

Mirabai · 23/04/2024 08:59

Chrysanthemum5 · 23/04/2024 08:00

Lovely @Mirabai the second one is definitely my style!

Thanks, it’s Diane Von Furstenberg. I’ve hung my nose over it for several years.

The red one is Realisation Par which has some really nice stuff.

TressiliansStone · 23/04/2024 09:04

I am taking notes, @stillhelenahandcart !

I've been after a sleeveless cricket jumper since last year. I paused my buying to actually wear my lovely purchases for a while and work out what gaps still need filled in my wardrobe.

Notsosecrethistory · 23/04/2024 11:22

I'm wearing jeans, trainers and a waterproof coat most days, so I'm well out of the loop. I think like @stillhelenahandcart I tend to go more bohemian academic in the summer. (In my head at least)
