Hello again to everyone from the last thread and welcome to anyone who enjoys talking about this aesthetic .. and if you have photos to share even better!

We've been discussing woollen jumpers, tweed skirts and jackets (with and without elbow patches), flannel trousers, fair isle tank tops, leather boots, culottes, berets and many other appealing garments, and more recently novels, poetry, libraries in general and even home decor with a DA vibe. Plus tortoiseshell spectacles and lorgnettes. I don't think we've touched on DA hairstyles yet although I've been giving that some thought ..

A DA quote I came across the other day: "I declare after all, there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library." (P&P of course)

If curling up in a wing-backed armchair in front of a log fire, with candles flickering, sipping tea from a china mug while reading your Jane Austen or Bronte novel sounds appealing, this thread might be for you. Or if you just like the clothes - that works too.

Our first thread below:

And where to find it? This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trous...

@Bookist i read The Lamplighters last year and really enjoyed it.

Just got this from Tu which I think will be nice from work.

someone at work the other day said I reminded them of their former, eccentric art teacher in my dress style. 😁🙈

That's really nice 😊 I used to get loads of lovely things from Sainsbury's: nice jumpers, jeans in many colours etc, but in recent times, there are just too many florals and slogans. I wish they would go back to good quality block colour stuff. My main bugbear is women's PJs with ridiculous sayings and Teddy bears. I am an adult. Just a good cotton plain set would be good!

It's so atmospheric isn't it? Her prose is almost poetry. Loved how it kept you guessing right until the end x

I have a denim dress from TU and it's better quality than my very similar one from Boden (that was five times the price) x

Right, I would love a pic, but I am thinking a grandad shirt or a mandarin collar blouse? In silk/satin material or else stiff cotton as a contrast to the soft wool. Pin stripe or a small pale check. Cream, duck egg blue, racing green, or tan. I've a negative thing about navy blue or brown with black. Or jewel colours (ruby, emerald, sapphire) with black. Not saying it's wrong, it just doesn't look right to me.
All just my own opinions!

Oh a Grandad collar, yes! You clever girl. Anything more would just tangle with the collar of the cardi. I'm like you in that I dislike wearing black with a bright colour too. I always remember Trinny & Susanna saying wisely that wearing black with bright colour 'just looks cheap'.

Notsosecrethistory · 29/10/2023 19:39

Sounds lovely - done up, does it need anything more than a cami/vest under it? A sailor collar prob doesn't need anything else...

I hadn't thought of just wearing it buttoned up? I like the sound of that. Very French girl chic well French grandma chic

Where I'm staying next week is remote and the place has no Wi-Fi so I will be off-grid. (Bliss!) I'm bringing loads of books, a heated throw, a hot water bottle and several snuggly jumpers. Long windswept walks on the beach and up to a nearby ruined castle with the dog in the mornings, pub lunches that will go on until evening, candle light and a roaring fire in the evenings. I cannot wait!

@helenahandcart78 well that just sounds like my idea of Heaven. Remember to take lots of photos for us to admire when you're back on grid. We're off up North this weekend with a big group of friends to stay in a house that looks like it belongs in an Agatha Christie adaptation. There's a panelled billiards room and an actual, yes actual, library. Our bedroom has its own open fire and looks out over the river. Already planning my outfits, obvs x

Notsosecrethistory · 30/10/2023 12:13

@helenahandcart78 agree - sounds like heaven. I read an article about 'reading retreats' somewhere... it was like the antithesis of fitness retreats, instead your room has a library in and sweeping views, and people bring you tea and books, and you can go for walks if you like. It's always stayed with me 😂

Notsosecrethistory · 30/10/2023 12:13

@Bookist where is this house?! It sounds amazing!

Well I've just disappeared down this wormhole. What a fantastic idea. Not surprised they're already sold out!

Notsosecrethistory · 30/10/2023 12:56

Yes! That's not the one I saw, but that's the general gist - what a great idea!

Bookist · 30/10/2023 13:15

Perhaps we need to hold our Dark Academia AGM at one of them x

Notsosecrethistory · 30/10/2023 14:54

I'm in!

JaneJeffer · 30/10/2023 16:16

@Bookist aren't you scared that one of you is going to be murdered?

It has crossed my mind. But as I'll be dressed like Miss Marple I'm hoping the murderer will give me a wide berth x

@VisaWoes someone at work the other day said I reminded them of their former, eccentric art teacher in my dress style.

See, I love the DA look but I think I end up as more wacky art teacher and it's all a bit of a mess. I've lost a fair bit of weight lately-more to go-and not really found my style yet.

Mirabai · 31/10/2023 11:04

Hat arrived finally, took ages to come, but it’s lovely.

For the poster asking about sizing - I’m small 55-56cm and it fits perfectly. Now planning others in different colours.

Dark Academia 2 - the conversation continues..
TressiliansStone · 31/10/2023 11:23

Ooh, that's superb!

Thank you so much for the sizing info. I shall pester you further to ask what that colour was called on the website, please...Halloween Grin

I'm currently holed up in a cottage on Achill island with a children's writer and a film director it's fabulous! Lots of tweed, chunky knits, berets and Aran long scarves. Storm Ciaran is whistling around the house it's great
