Hello again to everyone from the last thread and welcome to anyone who enjoys talking about this aesthetic .. and if you have photos to share even better!

We've been discussing woollen jumpers, tweed skirts and jackets (with and without elbow patches), flannel trousers, fair isle tank tops, leather boots, culottes, berets and many other appealing garments, and more recently novels, poetry, libraries in general and even home decor with a DA vibe. Plus tortoiseshell spectacles and lorgnettes. I don't think we've touched on DA hairstyles yet although I've been giving that some thought ..

A DA quote I came across the other day: "I declare after all, there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library." (P&P of course)

If curling up in a wing-backed armchair in front of a log fire, with candles flickering, sipping tea from a china mug while reading your Jane Austen or Bronte novel sounds appealing, this thread might be for you. Or if you just like the clothes - that works too.

Our first thread below:

And where to find it? This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trous...

OK, not all very Dark Academia! Went rather off brand with the blue and fawn, but it's very me.

Think I could do with a different shoe with the brown tweed.

I like your brooch too. I haven't been much of a brooch wearer but this thread is making me think I should become one!

Oh you star, highlandcoo, thank you! I have no pale shoes in my wardrobe at the moment (apart from a regrettable pair of court shoes, bought in the usual wedding-guest panic), and those would be great.

Granny's brooch gets its first outing! About time, too. I think it might actually be a tie pin - it has a tiny gold chain and safety clip.

Although I can see right now that sharp object + scarf is going to be a complete no-no for me (unless the sharp object is very carefully secured through the scarf + jacket, and I sit very, very still...)

Well! Wore my beret only to be greeted as Frank Spencer by DH 😭

Well! Wore my beret only to be greeted as Frank Spencer by DH 😭

😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆

Today I wore a Black Watch tartan mini skirt, forest green, cashmere polo neck (with small brooch), black opaques and black, suede brogues. Felt very spruce until DH asked 'if Miss Jean Brodie' wanted a cup of tea.

SteveBuscemisRheumyEye · 28/10/2023 23:35

@Bookist why are they so very rude?!! 🤣😭😭🤣😭

Notsosecrethistory · 29/10/2023 08:44

@Bookist @SteveBuscemisRheumyEye They don't understaaaand! @😂

Hello tribe!

I am away next week so have been snowed under with work trying to clear the decks. And when I come back, I'll be snowed under catching up. I sometimes wonder why I bother taking annual leave!

Anyway, I have been keeping up with the thread and am loving the ideas and discussions.

I finished The Secret History last week and felt bereft for a day or two until I started on The Historian - thank you to whoever recommended it! Really atmospheric and the perfect gothic autumnal read.

Oh, and I entirely relate to the people getting less than supportive comments on their outfits. When I wore my beret for the first time in front of DH, he told me all I needed was a string of onions round my neck and then I'd be 'magnifique oui oui!' [Twirls pretend moustache]. He got a very hard stare, I can tell you.

I've another charity shop gem to show you all - tweed jacket originally from Avoca, a high end Irish brand. I haven't looked online but I think you'd be lucky to get change out of £100 for similar. I snapped it up for a tenner! It's a little big but it's mannish and slouchy so perfect for DA.

Where I'm staying next week is remote and the place has no Wi-Fi so I will be off-grid. (Bliss!) I'm bringing loads of books, a heated throw, a hot water bottle and several snuggly jumpers. Long windswept walks on the beach and up to a nearby ruined castle with the dog in the mornings, pub lunches that will go on until evening, candle light and a roaring fire in the evenings. I cannot wait!

Woman on the go... the Wedgewood brooch edition:

This is fabulous!

Think I could do with a different shoe with the brown tweed.

Love the dusky pink tones! And a polo under a blazer is always such a classic.

Can I ask the advice of you lovely DAers?
I bought the Amazon waistcoat mentioned upthread.
I've attached photos. The large is obviously too small under bust ( see photo done up)
I'm not sure whether to get the XL. My concern is that I think it might be too baggy/loose on underarm/ top of bust ( I think even the large might be too big here?)
Or, do keep this one and mess around with buttons to loosen under bust (maybe change to a single button) and maybe even try and mess around with darts on upper bust ( tricky and perhaps beyond my competence as it is lined).
I'm also not sure if this style is going to work for me anyway as it seems to emphasize my very large tummy ( I am not pregnant but look it sometimes!)
so maybe I just return it and look for something different.
My usual "style" is to go for lots of knitted/ jersey styles rather than fitted and looking at these photos I can see why!
What do you all think?

I agree with @TressiliansStone. I think you have a bit of leeway to move the buttons. It is a beautiful waistcoat - gorgeous colour.

@Bookist I like the sound of your book <adds to list>
@highlandcoo I have a whole week to myself - Dh has gone to Scotland to see his parents , not only can I have candles they can be scented 😂

So today I found what I think is an Edwardian blouse, hand made, embroidered , 58 knot buttons . It fits dd size 10 but she doesn't like it.
I'm on a diet but size 10 feels a stretch ...

That is a thing of beauty. So intricate and very versatile as you could dress it up or down. And go dark or light DA depending on season. What a brilliant find!

TressiliansStone · 29/10/2023 16:35

Now I have tweed-jacket-envy all over again!Grin Despite my own acquisitions.

A DA book recommendation from me. Just loving this so much. Has such an eerie, dream like quality to it. DH has gone out for a curry so hoping to finish it this evening x

Thanks @Bookist - another to add to my (ever growing) collection of books bought off the back of this thread!

You're very welcome. It was so good. Not the sort of book you could read again though x

helenahandcart78 · 29/10/2023 16:41

I want a cane too! I would go with a dark gold top as silver washes me out. I've actually had a bad back and clicky knees this week (old age plus bad posture while working at the laptop) so I really could have done with one!

I do have a wonderful large sturdy black umbrella with a wooden crook handle which I stride about with on inclement days. I can also lean on it and gaze into middle distance, in what I like to think is a very intellectual fashion 😂

Oh sorry to hear that. As ever though, we are twins. I am suffering from a painful coccyx. A few weeks back I spent an entire afternoon sitting and reading on a hard park bench. It's been bothering me ever since. If it doesn't ease by this week think I might need to see an osteopath. My Grandpa had a beautiful shooting cane, where the handle opens out into a small seat for perching on. And within the cane itself was a silver phial for your tot of whiskey. I wish I knew what happened to it x

IndianSummer78 · 29/10/2023 18:06

There's a shop in my town sells canes with animal heads carved on top. They're beautiful.

Bookist · 29/10/2023 19:21

I've just treated myself to a black, silk/cashmere mix cardigan with a sailor style collar. It's boxy and hits at hip length. But now I'm at a loss what to wear under it? A stretchy jersey top seems a bit bland. But a blouse would be too fussy, I think. I love a cardigan but never sure how to style it properly x

Right, I would love a pic, but I am thinking a grandad shirt or a mandarin collar blouse? In silk/satin material or else stiff cotton as a contrast to the soft wool. Pin stripe or a small pale check. Cream, duck egg blue, racing green, or tan. I've a negative thing about navy blue or brown with black. Or jewel colours (ruby, emerald, sapphire) with black. Not saying it's wrong, it just doesn't look right to me.
All just my own opinions!

Notsosecrethistory · 29/10/2023 19:39

Sounds lovely - done up, does it need anything more than a cami/vest under it? A sailor collar prob doesn't need anything else...

helenahandcart78 · 29/10/2023 19:40

Also, is it a round neck or v-neck?

VisaWoes · 29/10/2023 19:42

Just got this from Tu which I think will be nice from work.

someone at work the other day said I reminded them of their former, eccentric art teacher in my dress style. 😁🙈
