Thinking of getting subtle pink streaks added to my hair

But I’m in my 40s and work in a professional job.

For some reason I’ve been wanting to do this to my hair for the last couple of years but I’ve not gone ahead for several reasons.

Will it look ok if I let it grow out? Will I look like I’m going through a mid-life crisis? I’m 43 if that helps. Also how much is it likely to cost? Ideally I would like it to be done in a way where it would look ok if I decide to grow it out. Also would I need to check with my employers that it’s ok to have my hair like this?

I work for a large organisation in a professional field but not in a public facing role. There are a few reasons that have stopped me getting this done but then I think you only live once so why not?

Forgot to add, my hair is poker straight dark brown. I’ve seen a lot of photos of people with pink streaks in their hair but it’s been curled with a flat iron. Unfortunately I just don’t have the time to do that.

Pink is the new blue rinse.

Pink is the new blue rinse.

Can confirm, a neighbour in her 70s has pink streaks in her white hair.

Ok now I’m definitely not getting it done. So glad I checked on here first 😂

It's not a good look imho. A lot of middle aged woman seem to go in for a home dyed version which just looks awful. It's the Mrs Slocombe look for the 21st century.

BlueBlueBerries · 08/10/2023 21:23

Just do a semi permanent dye - directions or manic panic. Then, if you don't like it, you can wash it out. Go for it!

Worldgonecrazy · 08/10/2023 21:24

Yes it is completely mid-life crisis, and lots of older women are sporting a rainbow of hair colour, but who cares. If you like it, do it.

Friendpain · 08/10/2023 21:25

I had pink earlier this year and it’s a total faff. You have to keep re-dying it as it washes out all the time. So there’s no worry for you about growing it out as it’ll frustratingly wash out anyway.

Also you’ll need to bleach the bits you want pink too, which will wreck your hair.

RosesAndHellebores · 08/10/2023 21:28

I fancied bright blue highlights a few years ago. I'm over 60 and DH goes to my hairdresser too. I asked my hairdresser about doing it. She laughed and told me it would look awful and not to be silly.

Rosiem2808 · 08/10/2023 21:29

Go to a good hairdresser and ask for the tips only. That way if it is a fail you can get them cut off pronto

LadyWithLapdog · 08/10/2023 21:32

Something like this would look nice. Don’t be put off by the comments re blue rinse. It doesn’t look at all like that IMO.

That’s a good idea. I have had a look on Pinterest for ideas and saw a couple of ideas where the pink is done on the bottom layers and just about shows through the top layers. I just want to inject a bit of fun into my hair but at the same time don’t want to look like I’m having a mid life crisis!

Give it a go if you want to. Ignore all the naysayers.

Just use the toners, they wash in and out.

I did balayage and went for rose gold ends. It washed out in one wash so I had blonde balayage...

TigerDroveAgain · 08/10/2023 21:38

Pink really washes out though: I had bleached white hair for a bit and fancied pink in it - it was so faint and barely lasted a wash

sleepyscientist · 08/10/2023 21:38

What about red streaks to avoid the "purple rinse"

sunnyseed · 08/10/2023 21:38

I wouldn’t dare try and do it myself I would go to a hairdresser and get it done. I used to dye my own hair in my teens and 20s and had many a disaster which has put me off trying to dye my hair again.

ChocolateCakeOverspill · 08/10/2023 21:40

Use the drop it toner. You can make it as bright or subtle as you want, and if you don’t like it, wash it out.
