Thinking of getting subtle pink streaks added to my hair

But I’m in my 40s and work in a professional job.

For some reason I’ve been wanting to do this to my hair for the last couple of years but I’ve not gone ahead for several reasons.

Will it look ok if I let it grow out? Will I look like I’m going through a mid-life crisis? I’m 43 if that helps. Also how much is it likely to cost? Ideally I would like it to be done in a way where it would look ok if I decide to grow it out. Also would I need to check with my employers that it’s ok to have my hair like this?

I work for a large organisation in a professional field but not in a public facing role. There are a few reasons that have stopped me getting this done but then I think you only live once so why not?

Yes.

Something like this would look nice. Don’t be put off by the comments re blue rinse. It doesn’t look at all like that IMO.

I absolutely love this!!! It wouldn’t suit me personally but it looks beautiful.

pizzaHeart · 08/10/2023 22:10

I think it’s not about your age or professional job but about your colouring and style of hair. It looks silly if it doesn’t suit you but can be great.
I was never good with pink even it my teens, so I wouldn’t start now. I’ve found colour combination which suits me best so sticking to it. My teen Dd had pink highlights and it looked very good but she’s got completely different colouring. I can imagine her going around with pink hair in her 40s.

Beautifulvue · 08/10/2023 22:13

i saw a lovely image where someone died the underside of shoulder length hair with some pale pink ( on blonde). then when she wore it up you could see it and worn down, not. it looked very classy IMO and i will try it one day if i have the nerve!

No
Because then you will have to call yourself "crazy" and say "I am mad, me"....

Exactly. Pink hair today and then it will be dungarees the next.

BadBadDecisions · 08/10/2023 22:37

I tried this a couple of years ago. It looked fucking shit, luckily it faded really really quickly. Fuck knows what I was thinking.

Actually looking back this must have been the beginning of my mid-life crisis, and frankly things have only got weirder from that point...

LunaNorth · 08/10/2023 22:41

I liked my pastel pink pixie crop.

Only lasted about a week. It was a fun week, though.

Goodmirror · 08/10/2023 22:45

My Little Pony springs to mind

IDontHateRainbows · 08/10/2023 22:49

Been there, done that and yes it is a mid life crisis thing. Not that that should put you off!

It is ridiculously high maintenance/ quick fade so it wasn't a long lived fad for me.

If I could afford the upkeep I'd do it all the time

foxlover47 · 08/10/2023 22:51

I did it last October to go to a machine gun Kelly concert , I have ice blonde coloured hair and it lasted a couple of weeks really well and was able to wash out without needing to re bleach my hair again after to get it back blonde
I'm 49 and thought I want it so did it
Honestly just do it , it's only hair if you don't like it then go back to brunette but least you've itched the scratch as it were

ChishiyaBat · 08/10/2023 23:39

Wow some people are really sarky&judgemental! I'm an ex hair stylist who has being colouring my own hair every colour I fancy since I was 13! I'm 43 now and am currently sporting a half violet half green split. I love my colours, I give zero fucks what anyone else thinks!
pink is hard work to upkeep, but it is lovely. You might love it you might hate it, but unless you try you will never know, so I say go for it!

That’s a good idea. I have had a look on Pinterest for ideas and saw a couple of ideas where the pink is done on the bottom layers and just about shows through the top layers. I just want to inject a bit of fun into my hair but at the same time don’t want to look like I’m having a mid life crisis!

This is what I had done, my colours are lowlights rather than highlights so you don’t see the roots as your hair grows. I have had loads of compliments about the colour and love it!

Ok now I’m definitely not getting it done. So glad I checked on here first 😂

Mine does too!

If you do get it done it takes a long time to fade, just bear that in mind in case you're likely to get fed up of it.

Fucking hell. Quite a dose of ageism and sexism cowering inside some of these “Nooooo you’ll look old/blue rinse/mid life crisis!”

So what?

OP it could look awesome or you might hate it. Some people will judge, others will love it. Give it a whirl.

Sarahbumdaa · 09/10/2023 00:03

You could get some pink hair extensions through the bottom. Then you could take out if your not happy

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 09/10/2023 00:06

I did mine a few years ago and treated myself to a diy kit this year cos l loved it so much. Horrified to hear it is the new blue rinse/mid life crisis!! Maybe l should just get a mum bob and be done with it!

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 09/10/2023 00:06

I’m a Director in a professional role and have had bright purple or pink hair for the last 5 years or so. It does take a lot of work and I can never go incognito but I get so many compliments every day. Go for it!

MirrorMirror1247 · 09/10/2023 00:13

I'm a natural brunette but have been dyeing my hair dark purple for years. A hairdresser friend of mine suggested putting in some pink flashes, so I got her to do that for me about five weeks ago. A full head tint and highlights cost me £94 (she gave me friends and family discount). The pink has washed out a bit, and due to the cost I'm in no hurry to get it redone, but I thought it looked lovely while it lasted!

Go for it!

My hairdresser does the highlights and I do the purple. Arctic Fox colours are long lasting and very easy to use if you want to top up the pink. They do a diluter if you want pastel colours rather than vibrant.

I rather like yours @Ihateslugs . Looks sophisticated.
