Thinking of getting subtle pink streaks added to my hair

sunnyseed · 08/10/2023 21:13

But I’m in my 40s and work in a professional job.

For some reason I’ve been wanting to do this to my hair for the last couple of years but I’ve not gone ahead for several reasons.

Will it look ok if I let it grow out? Will I look like I’m going through a mid-life crisis? I’m 43 if that helps. Also how much is it likely to cost? Ideally I would like it to be done in a way where it would look ok if I decide to grow it out. Also would I need to check with my employers that it’s ok to have my hair like this?

I work for a large organisation in a professional field but not in a public facing role. There are a few reasons that have stopped me getting this done but then I think you only live once so why not?

Something like this would look nice. Don’t be put off by the comments re blue rinse. It doesn’t look at all like that IMO.

This is gorgeous

specialguest · 09/10/2023 08:41

The upkeep is insane for that sort of colour. First you will have to bleach your hair pale blonde before you add the pink dye. Then you'll probably have to re-dye it every fortnight depending on how often you wash your hair.

Lentilweaver · 09/10/2023 08:16

I rather like yours @Ihateslugs . Looks sophisticated.

Gosh, first time I’ve been called sophisticated! Thanks

AtrociousCircumstance · 08/10/2023 23:59

Fucking hell. Quite a dose of ageism and sexism cowering inside some of these “Nooooo you’ll look old/blue rinse/mid life crisis!”

So what?

OP it could look awesome or you might hate it. Some people will judge, others will love it. Give it a whirl.

Jaw dropping isn’t it?

How have some of you fallen so completely for that misogynistic rubbish.

How on earth do you ‘look like you’re having a mid life crisis’? To who and why do you care?

Absolutely pathetic.

SoupDragon · 09/10/2023 11:56

Dear god there are some boring fuckers on this thread!

Go for it OP. You can always change it if you don't like it.

LunaTheCat · 09/10/2023 11:59

58 year old medic here… I love my pink hair.

Lentilweaver · 09/10/2023 12:19

We may be boring, but I don't see the point of this forum if everyone who posts a question asking for opinions must be met with " You do you hun! Go for it, beautiful! I don't give a fuck what anyone thinks about me! #Livelovelife". Its not Insta! 😁

The OP asked. We answered. Up to her what she does with our opinions.

MrsDanversChickenSandwich · 09/10/2023 12:22

Warning the OP that she might be mistaken for a lesbian is like something from the 1980s.

Lentilweaver · 09/10/2023 12:46

Well @MrsDanversChickenSandwich that I agree with. But we dont have to welcome everything someone suggests. A couple of my friends have coloured their hair pink. It is not flattering, and not because they are in their 40s either. It just isn't, in my opionion.

Someone will now post to say they don't care about flattering hairstyles and they DGAF! Fine. But clearly the OP does, or she wouldn't have asked.

The comments about "I'm mad, me" "midlife crisis" "blue rinse" ...l those are the ones that show the posters up to be boring. It's not an opinion, it's just being rude really.

You said Because then you will have to call yourself "crazy" and say "I am mad, me".... which is just ridiculous and narrow minded.

Danikm151 · 09/10/2023 12:55

I’ve been doing streaks in my hair since my teens. The times I went back to all brown people at work have commented that it doesn’t look right 😂

go for it- if it doesn’t turn out right you can always dye it

Lentilweaver · 09/10/2023 13:01

Oh well @SoupDragon Sorry you find it ridiculous. It was partly tongue-in-cheek though. But not entirely.

No.

You'll look like a Krusty/stop oil/lesbian librarian/Labour mp. Etc

The daily mail comments section would make you feel right at home!

Catswithhats · 09/10/2023 21:32

@Ihateslugs fab
I love seeing people with coloured hair at any age, it adds a little brightness Smile

Planning a few coloured highlights when my hair grows back (post-chemo)

AnchorWHAT · 10/10/2023 09:32

When i wore my hair poker straight i bought a load of coloured clip in extensions i cut to the length of my hair and clipped one in under the top layer so it just showed through as my hair moved, i loved them and i could change the colour whenever i felt like it and not bother with them for work.

Zooeyzo · 10/10/2023 13:17

I'm around the same age as you @sunnyseed and did this in my early 20s. As well as purple. Is it back in fashion? I'd love to do it again

Pushkinini · 10/10/2023 13:20

I'm 51 and until recently had cobalt blue streaks in my hair. If you like pink OP, go for it. They'll fade in time anyway if you don't like them.

luxuryinteriors · 10/10/2023 16:14

I have pink hair and I'm middle aged.

BadBadDecisions · 08/10/2023 22:37

I tried this a couple of years ago. It looked fucking shit, luckily it faded really really quickly. Fuck knows what I was thinking.

Actually looking back this must have been the beginning of my mid-life crisis, and frankly things have only got weirder from that point...

So funny 🤣 you've proper cheered me up

Zooeyzo · 10/10/2023 21:02

@luxuryinteriors That looks really good.

Missingmyusername · 10/10/2023 21:10

Clara Batten style? I quite like hers. I couldn’t carry it off though.

My elderly neighbour dyes her hair pink- I think she colours it platinum blonde and then pink if that’s possible…. it’s long and pink and scraggy, looks bloody awful. She dresses in leggings and wife beaters- I mean each to their own but it’s not a great look imo. I think you need decent hair to pull it off.

Work colleague has a pixie cut that’s she dyed pink- suits her, she’s about 50.

luxuryinteriors · 10/10/2023 21:14

Thanks @Zooeyzo

PTSDBarbiegirl · 10/10/2023 21:16

I used to love this look but now it screams 'TWAW' to me and has a different vibe altogether.

Housenoob · 10/10/2023 21:23

Please don't. It's dated (MySpace emo/scene kid from the 00's vibe) and looks like you're trying too hard to be 'quirky'. I'd say this whether you're a teen, in your mid 90's, or anything in between. It's just plain naff.

If you want a change, go for a nice warm balayage with some more natural tones.

spookehtooth · 10/10/2023 21:26

Isn't there the thing where you dye parts of your hair, and its only visible when styled a certain way? Probably a technical term for it, but that would be a way for to dye hair and not think about whether or not anyone you work with will say anything. I'd go bold, personally, unless you think the consequences work wise was really that bad

I'm so thankful I work from home, I got piercings here and there that I wouldn't have thought about cos work. Ditto dying my hair a kind of dark purple a few weeks back. It was disappointing, but I'm cool with that, try again in a few weeks or months. Who cares if it goes wrong, its ephemeral, it goes soon enough. Doesn't look great for a while, that's conversation material, you can work that by moaning or making a joke about it. Not taking little risks makes a dull life
