Wooly black coat - at least 50% wool - has anyone seen a good deal?

I know I will have to spend some $ if I want quality and warmth but I don't want to go too crazy

I prefer it to be kinda tailored, long-ish and preferably a collar than can be closed rather than a lapel...and maybe no belt...but I can cope with the belt if I find the right coat

Ah and pockets!

Cos, surely?

I bought this in a charity shop ( pockets still stitched) so basically new. It doesn’t tick all of your boxes but worth considering! https://www.allsaints.com/women/coats-and-jackets/sidney-wool-cashmere-blend-tailored-coat/WO126Z-5.html

Thanks but I'd like some waist definition and for that price I'd need more boxes ticked

Lucky you! Where is this charity shop then?

Have a look at all the MaxMara coats on Vestiaire.

but have vetoed a £329 coat.

She's vetoed it because it's a lot of money for something that isn't exactly what she wants

My budget is flexible but I have never bought a brand new quality wooly coat so I'm adjusting to prices - I usually wear down coats from Uniqlo which are cheaper than 329 - so half of that would be ideal

Well OP has now confirmed she's looking at around £165. Which rules out two suggestions already. (Cos and Max Mara second hand)

Anthropologie and Seasalt have 50% wool blend coats, some under £200, but none at £165.

I don't know what the quality would be - just picked 2 brands that are generally reasonable quality (regardless of what you think of the clothes)

That is my comfort zone but I can push myself and invest more for the right thing. But then I would like it to be timeless, durable and versatile.

So

Is 50% wool warm enough or should I go higher?

I’d rather spend more and not have to layer so much underneath

NatashaDancing · 05/10/2023 11:40

I don't know. All of my coats are wool or a wool and cashmere mix but it's generally the case that layers are the best way to keep warm.

If it's really cold I'll also add another layer of a wool shawl or wrap over my shoulders.

If budget is the main concern, I got mine from an army surplus store for £50. New, 90% wool, lined, navy blue, buttons up to the neck, but is so warm I rarely do it up at all. I'm size 10 and size 36 is a nice amount of oversized on me

Have you tried House of Bruar or similar country stores? HoB have a tweed (grey or navy) funnel neck coat (100% wool) at £245 and lots in their clearance section depending on size. Agree with others re layers being key to warmth.

If it's more a city look you're after, I've always found jaeger to do affordable good quality woollen coats.

Love this from Mango. They're great for coats. I got a gorgeous Camel one last year. As a previous poster has said, Cos are excellent too. I'd love a Max Mara, but my coat of dream in Selfridges was almost 3k. Gulp.

Yes, I used Epic Militaria. There's others too, no doubt.
