En brogue -- a flat shoe thread

Can we chat flats please? All shoes, not just brogues, but not trainers. Flatforms entertained. Block heels, say up to 1" max.

I'm wearing these R&B loafers today in the murky green shade. (With ankle-length tapered leg jeans, white tee and a cropped chore jacket.) It's still warm enough for bare ankles here but have already tried them with all the socks and eagerly anticipating cooler weather 😀

Latest acquisition: these Bobbies though they're still at the cobblers awaiting rubber soles. (Apparently with the return of ballet pumps the demand for this has soared so who knows when they'll be ready 😑)

Contemplating: some higher vamp styles from Aeyde (Moa or Betty). Anyone know what their sizing is like?

@shivbo2014 I have the feather Viviennes from Embassy and they're great! Might wear them tomorrow now I think of it!

clowniform · 06/10/2023 22:29

OK, I know I said I was happy with my R&B brogues but this Embassy London chat sent me down a dangerous path and now I can't stop thinking about these Chies.

Also these loafers.

JaceLancs · 06/10/2023 23:44

I normally hate anything with a bow but bought these yesterday as they are such soft suede

I'm still looking at the feather ones as well, the colours are gorgeous. it's a toss up between the two!

UnconventionalLife · 07/10/2023 13:27

I recently bought these Toast Sturlini loafers & love them!
I'm a big fan of flat shoes as I'm tall already & find them more comfortable
I love brogues but I'm fussy about them & rarely see any I love.

I love the colourful ones on other people but less keen on them for me. I like a nod to androgynous but not totally mens iykwim.

Bobbies looks promising so off to have a look on there...Great thread!

Love the loafers.

Such a lovely thread - thank you for starting it. I've given up high heels but am bored with trainers. There's a whole new world to explore.....

Jacopo · 07/10/2023 15:36

Love this thread and I’ve just bought the shiny black brogues by White Stuff, from John Lewis. Love them.
Now to continue my quest for a pair of penny loafers that don’t slip off my narrow heels.

Auntpodder · 07/10/2023 12:42

thanks to this thread and a search on Ebay, I’ve learned that Startrite go up to 43 shoe size and don’t have VAT and this Angry Angels brogue is rather nice https://www.startriteshoes.com/products/impulsive-black-patent-girls-lace-up-school-shoes

Ohhh... I might have to get those!

JaneFarrier · 07/10/2023 20:02

@Stravaig (love your username) I have been trying to get back into wearing "proper" shoes but am finding it hard on my feet. I do wear trainers a lot, but mostly because I am hypermobile and have dreadful connective tissue so my arches collapse. But I feel scruffy all the time. My work trainers are solid black and don't really draw the eye, but I'd love to have something more stylish. I'm kind of limited to styles that actively support round the arch - lace-ups or Mary Janes with thick straps do work, but they aren't very sophisticated. I look at these loafers and ballet flats and love the look but know I wouldn't be able to stand in them for long! And I also have the world's bluntest toes so anything pointy is out...

clowniform · 07/10/2023 20:17

@JaneFarrier (Is your name a DWJ reference by any chance? 🧙🏻‍♀️)
Don't know that this'll help if you just don't like them, but chunky lace-ups and MJs are extremely trendy right now, especially with round or slightly squared toes. Will leave it to more knowledgeable posters to link specific supportive options.

@UnconventionalLife Love those loafers! I'm waiting for a pair of Fracap Monkey boots from Toast right now 😀

@MonikerBing We are definitely on the same wavelength! I know better than to swear off heels forever for myself, but will resist a return for as long as possible.

Wanted to buy the silver White Stuff brogues but they are all sold out. Have you all been buying them?

eyeslikebutterflies · 04/10/2023 09:04

OP, I think I love you - never heard of Bobbies but those pointed flats you linked to are literally what I've spent the past month looking for! Thank you :)

Also love the R&B but will have to save up and up for them (tho I know they'll last forever so that's some consolation).

I was looking for some boots earlier and thought R&B had got really expensive this year! They do tend to last well so I don’t mind paying for quality and I tend to go for classic styles rather than anything especially ‘fashionable’ but it stuck in my mind that they seem to have really gone up in price this year.

Lentilweaver · 07/10/2023 20:52

I have been thinking lately that I don't want my brogues to last for 10 years because I would get bored. I would rather buy some less expensive ones every two to three years!

I think that's fine if you know your tastes change all the time and that there are plenty of cheaper options you like. I would spend more on classic brogues because they're not a fashion piece for me, but set a much smaller budget for stuff like ballet pumps or loafers -- not that they aren't classics for some, just not a consistent part of my style in the same way.

@clowniform yes, it is! SophieHatter was already taken... I probably have more in common with Sophie personality-wise but I have sympathy for Jane, the plain girl with weird hair and dodgy fashion sense who nonetheless has a heart of gold.

I do have some Mary Janes already and one pair of relatively new laceups but they're not fantastically comfortable. I think they need more breaking in... I like them rather than love them.

chalkyc2 · 08/10/2023 07:07

I have the silver white stuff brogues - I got them at the beginning of the summer. For me they've been a 'summer' brogue - they're quite light, sole is quite thin and the leather is almost a bit suede- like. I don't think they would be great in the rain!

My favourite brogues are my grenson snakeskin chunky ones I got in a sample sale a year ago. I had to retire a cream pair of boden summer brogues (replaced with silver white stuff). I also have a pair of brown older clarkes brogues with a cream chunky sole which I like. So I think I'm brogue-d out atm.

I've just branched out into a pair of loafers - the latest M&S sienna miller ones. But over the next month I reckon I'm getting my boots out. Am also a trainer lover....

MonikerBing · 08/10/2023 07:54

I love love love the Cheaneys! Do they shred your feet though? (I don't have a breaking in lady in waiting to hand at the moment).

Also the chie miharas which are just gorgeous I think. And actually the Boden pointy flats too. I used to wear Boden shoes a lot when I had to dress up for work and they were very comfortable.

I've just remembered I have a pair of Grenson loafers and a pair of monk shoes from Toast which I barely wear. (Have been preoccupied with trainers for the last couple of winters) so I might dig those out. I saw a woman earlier this year in a black trouser suit with flat shoes and bright stripy socks and she looked great!

Lentilweaver · 08/10/2023 07:59

Oh @chalkyc2 that's useful advice. I walk a LOT because I am in London, so I definitely need something sturdy. I mostly live in trainers for that reason. Maybe I will save up for R and B or Lanx then.

This autumn has been so hot. I can't even imagine cold and rain at the moment.
