En brogue -- a flat shoe thread

Can we chat flats please? All shoes, not just brogues, but not trainers. Flatforms entertained. Block heels, say up to 1" max.

I'm wearing these R&B loafers today in the murky green shade. (With ankle-length tapered leg jeans, white tee and a cropped chore jacket.) It's still warm enough for bare ankles here but have already tried them with all the socks and eagerly anticipating cooler weather 😀

Latest acquisition: these Bobbies though they're still at the cobblers awaiting rubber soles. (Apparently with the return of ballet pumps the demand for this has soared so who knows when they'll be ready 😑)

Contemplating: some higher vamp styles from Aeyde (Moa or Betty). Anyone know what their sizing is like?

This thread is making me so happy! I thought women had moved en masse to wearing trainers (which I can't abide) with everything. I've been skulking around in out of season boots or sandals thinking it would seem less weird than still wearing real shoes.

Has anyone tried Vivaia’s flat shoes?

No, but I've been interested in them for a while. I might get some next summer, they are ideal summer shoes IMO as lightweight, breathable and washable.

Loafers are very on trend - more so than white trainers.

Oh my, those Ganni Mary Janes are gorgeous! But expensive! But GORGEOUS!

Auntpodder · 05/10/2023 00:34

I was gutted when I saw the price… @TheJackal

OK. Forgive me if this has been asked many many times but...what socks do you wear with brogues and loafers? Or do you put bare feet, straight from slippers, into cold leather shoes and then go out with bare ankles? I love the look of brogues and loafers but need to know the secret to not having cold feet!

I've been living with the same question @TooTiredToType77 ... I blame my inability to withstand cold for my stylistic faux pas 😞

Some amazing shoe suggestions here btw... lovely thread!

The website rings cheaply manufactured Chinese tat alarm bells…

Six or seven years ago my favourite flats died - a pair of Russell and Bromley black velvet flats, smoking slipper shape, with a golden bee embroidered on the toes. They were magnificent. Vivaia’s embroidered shoes look like they could be a good replacement…

AngryBirdsNoMore · 05/10/2023 12:16

I must say, my current go to flats are Skechers. They are not particularly fashionable or stylish, to be honest, but I love the comfort - I have a hyperactive toddler and a newborn, so this is key. I regularly do 15k steps a day.

These are brilliantly comfortable once the stiff ankle has been worn in (they did rip my heels up the first few times): Skechers goldie collegiate trainers . They’re going for the Nike Air Force / Veja look but with Skechers comfort. I wear them with jeans and also with maxi and above knee dresses. I think I’m too short to pull off midi and trainers without looking like I’m commuting!

I also like these black flats - again, they ripped my ankles up the first few times, but I can now happily walk 15k steps without feeling it. Skechers cleos

I hear the Go Walk shoes are incredibly comfortable but I’m sorry, they’re so ugly in
my opinion. Comfort is important but I want them to look good too!

These are close to my magnificent shoes of a few years ago, but without the crown.

I’ve got the Fitflop Allegro flats, on offer from Amazon for £45.

@girljulian those boys' brogues look really practical, what a great idea. Sorry to speak of trainers, but I sometimes buy kids Stan Smiths and love the extra padding.

@Justkoko I've tried on Prada loafers and they felt like walking on clouds! So incredibly soft yet sturdy. Could not imagine spending that much on a single pair of shoes though.

Thank you so much for posting those Gannis @Auntpodder I saw someone wearing these loafers recently and was struggling to place them (she got off the train before I could ask where they were from). The proportions look a bit weird on screen but so good IRL.

@AngryBirdsNoMore I remember those R&B smoking slippers! There are also these from C&J though pricier than the French Sole ones

@Auntpodder if it helps at all those CWK loafers ran really small, like a full size smaller than standard IMO. Unlike the clothes and hat which were hilariously oversized. Possibly some esoteric Alice in Wonderland reference going on there.

Some socks styling ideas for @TooTiredToType77 and others. All pictures taken from Japanese magazines (Japan has a proper appreciation for socks probably to with the frequency of shoe removal). Necessary MN disclaimer: other less geeky androgynous trad styles are available, this is just what I like.

I’ve just bought the Toast Sturlini derby shoes and they are divine. Very like the Prada Derby shoes from last year but a third of the price. Very supportive and comfortable too.

Love Love Love the Ganni shoes 💕
