I want to look nice this autumn but end up in jumpers and jeans. Any recommendations? I am late forties, size 12/14 and 5 foot 6. I have light brown hair and pale (deathly) skin.

I'm similar age and size and am mostly wearing wide leg cords or jeans with cropped/short cardigans and fitted tops underneath. I like the per una wide leg cords (have navy from last year and green from this year) as well as some brown cords from Lands End. I have short cardigans and jumpers from Uniqlo that I'm teaming with these and a leather jacket.

I'm 5'8" and size 10.

I've bought some small-check wide leg trousers in grey with plum/blue lines.
Two very fine wool, loose fit short sleeve sweaters (dove grey & cream)
A pair of black suede loafers.

I haven't bought office clothes since before covid, so have just started rebuilding a tidier wardrobe. Nice things seem to have shot up in price. 😕

I am a similar size to you. Have bought, all in sales or discounted:
Wide leg trousers and cord trousers from Uniqlo and Cos
A green bomber jacket from Superdry
Chestnut brogues from Clarkes ( not super stylish but comfy)
Khaki trench coat from M and S
Bargain Russell and Bromley bag from charity shop plus Uniqlo merino wool jumper, ditto
Have enough knits from last year so not buying any more, though may buy a cotton jumper or two from Rapanui
Considering a cord dress from White Stuff

BUT it's boiling hot in London, so I have not been able to wear any of it yet. It's October. Why is it still so hot? ( Rhetorical question).

Good quality brown leather ankle boots

Corduroy trousers (mine are from M&S, two pairs of their flared shape and one pair wide legged) and/or corduroy midi skirt

Pure wool knitwear (I have been building a collection over the past couple of years ranging from M&S merino to smaller brands chunkier knits - I don’t buy polyester or acrylic knits now at all, you can get wool second hand too for less than some of the high st acrylic knits)

I'm early 40s, size 12/14 and 5ft3. Bob haircut and glasses.

One truly extravagant piece of knitwear. (Usually a carefully considered Shetland jumper or ridiculous beanie. This year a huge Marni jumper bought on impulse in a sale.)

New boots. I don’t tend to do this every year, partly because there’s too much choice and I can never make up my mind, partly because I care more about clothes and slightly resent money spent on anything else. This year, knee high with a heel wonderfully reminiscent of my 70s childhood.

A tweed coat or jacket. My finger is hovering over ‘Buy’ …

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 09/10/2023 23:04

I’ve bought a couple of nice knits, both from Arket - one grey wool, and one pale pink alpaca - and a slightly bonkers 80s style cardigan from Oliver Bonas. Black leather Adidas Samba trainers. My big buy (on my credit card) was a gorgeous leather jacket from Whistles which I desperately wanted last year and sold out super-fast.

What footwear are you wearing with your wide leg cords? Am struggling with this! Also with wide leg jeans?

Britpopbaby · 10/10/2023 06:21

I have bought an All Saints coat from a charity shop ( pockets still sewn so basically new) that is last years version of one of their icon pieces. It instantly makes me feel smarter, more put together and on trend.

I’m enjoying my wide leg jeans that I bought last year from Boden. I am wearing them with flat Mary Jane ballet style shoes, a Bretton too and Mango short cardigans. I am surprised the show/ trouser combo works but it does and makes me feel like I’ve actually ‘put ‘together an outfit more purposefully.

BansheeofInisherin · 10/10/2023 08:20

Clearly I am a complete idiot, because I posted more than 3 buys.

@chalkyc2 I wear them with trainers or flat boots.

For me definitely my dark green cropped cords from Seasalt. Really warm slipper boots from Passenger and a mustard coloured knitted top from Sainsburys.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/10/2023 19:22

I've just bought a grey knitted midi skirt from Phase 8, new with tags from the charity shop. I'm going to wear it with suede over the knee boots, a black merino jumper and biker jacket.

I've also bought a huge black Zara scarf (also new with tags from the charity shop).
