Sequins for a wedding?

Hi my son is getting married in a couple of months, so a winter wedding. I don't want a traditional mother of groom dress/jacket combo and was wondering about this. Are sequins ok? I want something interesting but equally don't want to be too over the top

Unless it's a very glam evening wear wedding, I don't think that's appropriate. In fact I think it's dangerously close to something a winter bride might wear. Looks like you're competing for attention rather than wanting to be 'interesting'.

Ok thanks, that was my fear too, so probably a no.

Well it's an absolutely stunning dress I would say its inappropriate for the mother of the groom (or anyone at a wedding).

VeridicalVagabond · 29/09/2023 12:49

It's a lovely dress but I don't think it's wedding attire unless it's a particularly sparkly wedding (a friend of mine got married in December and said she wanted everyone in sparkles, glitter and sequins, it was the most twinkly wedding ever!)

If it were available in a darker colour maybe, but I think silver is pushing it too much into winter bridal.

Whataretheodds · 29/09/2023 12:53

It's lovely but not appropriate unless evening/black tie dress code. If that is the dress code I would check what colour the bride is wearing/show this to her to get an opinion.

@cashmerecardigans there’s plenty of room between Phase Eight circa 1980 and blatantly upstaging the bride!

What is it about that dress you might like to keep? Is it specifically the sequins, or the shape, or something else? (Don’t choose that colour.)

What’s the context of the wedding?

NeunundneunzigHorseBallonz · 29/09/2023 13:17

I think you need to speak to the bride about the event first and get more details about what she envisions for her wedding. I live in Aus and weddings are a bit different here. Is it appropriate to wear something a bit conservative for the ceremony and get glammed up for the evening do?

Sequins totally fine. That particular dress is giving Aunt Sarah off Derry Girls.

Or this one

What size are you, @cashmerecardigans?

(And what’s your maximum budget?)

cashmerecardigans · 29/09/2023 18:13

Hi sorry I've been out all day so just got back. @Saxendi I've ordered a similar one in deep teal with long sleeves, so that may do it.
The bridesmaids are wearing burgundy, so I want to avoid anything to close to that.
It's quite a big formal do. I want interesting but absolutely not look at me. I'm normally a Vivienne Westwood type of girl, so love asymmetric dresses. Definitely not phase eight. I wear a lot of fitted dresses for work and don't want that for this.
Budget is flexible, I'd happily pay a fair bit more than the self portrait price. I'm a size 10

@MetaDaughter it's the shape of it, particularly the off the shoulder. I'm a bit weird about necklines, hate them to close to my neck and also have irrational hatred of v necks. So boat neck/slash neck or off the shoulder

I tried a gorgeous acne studios satin dress but the neck was awful and the top half didn't look great at all, although the bottom half was lovely

I'd definitely buy it in a different colour but unfortunately they don't seem to have similar. I've ordered a long sleeved one but I fear the slightly puffed shoulders may not be great
