John Frieda go blonder - help

I’ve just bought this. Give me your hacks please! Has anyone used this long term without going to the colourist in between?

I’m medium/dark blonde and can’t afford/ don’t have time to go to the hairdresser since having babies. I feel so drab and need a bit of lift and brightness. I used to have balayage/ dip dye before Covid.

Don't!!!! My kids did on holiday and they look like Garfield now. It's the same as sun-in.

Doughnut100 · 27/09/2023 16:51

Oh no! What colour is their hair naturally?

You will go orange, no matter the natural colour of your hair.

As an 80s teenager it was quite a look. As a grown woman, not so much 😂.

Doughnut100 · 27/09/2023 17:17

I’m confused… it has really good reviews!

I used this several years ago and it worked really well to lighten my dark blonde hair and didn't make it orange. However, it completely destroyed my hair to the point where it was severely damaged and breaking and I had to stop using it. You have been warned!

Doughnut100 · 27/09/2023 17:20

Damn. I was excited that this could be the answer. Would it be better to use a box dye or is that just as bad?

The John Frieda spray is just diluted hydrogen peroxide (bleach), so just as damaging to your hair as hair dye really.

smallshinybutton · 27/09/2023 17:35

STEP AWAY! TURNED MY HAIR INTO A FRIED ORANGE MESS

Doughnut100 · 27/09/2023 17:37

I’m not actually worried about damage. In the past I much preferred my hair when bleached as it is too limp naturally. My concern is more just finding a way to brighten my hair without it being a block colour or just a terrible colour.

OP posts:
Doughnut100 · 27/09/2023 17:38

@smallshinybutton can you tell me more about your hair and how you applied it?

I don’t want to dismiss all the advice I’m being given but I’m just so confused because the Amazon reviews are overwhelmingly positive!

I use the Go Blonder shampoo and Conditioner which I think does have the same effect as a holiday in the sun, without causing damage, for my naturally fair hair, but have avoided the spray becuase of responses like the ones you're getting

Its5656 · 27/09/2023 17:42

I used this a couple of years ago and omg it was awful. I'm dark blonde naturally, it went orange and yellow and cost me £200 for a colour correction at the hairdressers.
Every time I've ever used a box dye I've regretted it. They ruin my hair and the split ends take months to sort out.

DuchessOfSausage · 27/09/2023 17:45

I used Sun In in the 1980s and my hair didn't go red, but I think that was because of my natural hair colour. There were a few who had the orange 'Sun In' hair.

Its5656 · 27/09/2023 19:08

See if you can find a mobile hairdresser as they tend to be much cheaper than a salon. Mine charges £45 for a half head and £80 for a full head of highlights. The hairdressing salon charge double that.
If you have to stick with a box dye then my friend used the Holly Willoughby dye to go blonde and it looked really good. I did the exact same thing and looked like the real slim shady. They tend to be very hit and miss.

I used to use those - I don't know if they're the same but they used to have camomile but no peroxide. I used other camomile shampoos in the past if I hadn't had enough sun.

coxesorangepippin · 27/09/2023 19:47

Garfield 😂

Lookforthejoy · 27/09/2023 20:03

I didn't go orange with this. It lightened my hair a bit bringing out some natural highlights, helped along with the summer sun. I'm a blondeish-brown.

wankyseahorse33 · 27/09/2023 20:04

I also went orange from using this 😂😂😂

Olika · 27/09/2023 20:41

My friend who is a hairdresser said my hair had never been so damaged as it was after using the spray. Had to let it grow out.

smallshinybutton · 27/09/2023 20:42

Dark blonde- sprayed it on as directed

amispeakingintongues · 27/09/2023 20:46

Find a mobile hairdresser. Mine does half head for £50. Buy a purple toner treatment to apply all over and you'll have a lovely shade of blonde for a good price

Megamopyeah · 27/09/2023 20:55

I used ‘sun in’ for 20 years then it was discontinued I started using the John Frieda one around 5 years ago. I love the colour it makes my hair, I’m dark blonde naturally. But I do think it can be damaging. I have fine, limp, oily hair so happy for it to be dried out a bit on top. I do think it causes a bit of breakage though. For now I’m happy to stick with it as I’ve never had my hair dyed before and not grey yet.
One tip would be so it gradually. So put it on then leave for a few weeks and then do it again.

kateclarke · 27/09/2023 20:58

I have used it for years and my hair is not orange.
It is quite drying so I use deep conditioner in the sauna at the gym, then spray it and use a hairdryer to increase the effect.

zinfi · 27/09/2023 21:06

The spray? Don't do it. I've seen too many posts about broken and damaged hair afterwards.

BumbleNova · 27/09/2023 21:16

The other thing is that once you have used it, you cannot have highlights over the top - your hair will melt! I had a strand test after using it and it was terrifying.

That said - it worked well for me for years, I am naturally dark blonde. I got too lazy/ busy for the maintenance.
