I’ve just bought this. Give me your hacks please! Has anyone used this long term without going to the colourist in between?

I’m medium/dark blonde and can’t afford/ don’t have time to go to the hairdresser since having babies. I feel so drab and need a bit of lift and brightness. I used to have balayage/ dip dye before Covid.

I used to get my whole hair bleached quite harshly even when it was really long and it actually improved the texture of my hair - it wouldn’t be as greasy, had more volume and would finally hold a curl. So maybe I’m naive but I’m not worried about the condition of my hair - peroxide is peroxide, no? I can go really slowly rather than do it over and over again.

ha this is going to be one of those posts where everyone says don’t do it and the OP has obviously already made their mind up and does it anyway 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
I’ll post before and after photos so you can all say I told you so 😂

@Megamopyeah and @kateclarke can you tell me your strategy - do you spray it all over, or just roots, or in sections?

I just did a test bit on the underside of my hair but the lighting is bad and I can’t even see if it is noticeable. Let’s see in the morning….

kateclarke · 27/09/2023 21:21

I did the whole head until it got to the desired shade, then just the roots to minimise the damage.

Doughnut100 · 27/09/2023 21:25

@BumbleNova what happened on the strand test?

Thanks for all the suggestions of a mobile hairdresser but I literally have zero budget. Two babies one income. Also no childcare so don’t have time to sit with a head of foils!

Next I’m going to do a DIY lash lift so maybe I’m just a reckless person as I know most wouldn’t attempt that 😂 honestly though I feel so frumpy these days the only way is up. (I’ve actually tried the lash lift before but it didn’t take, that was 8 weeks ago so I’m going for round two.)

I used Sun In in the 1980s and my hair didn't go red, but I think that was because of my natural hair colour. There were a few who had the orange 'Sun In' hair.

Me too. I had hair the colour of a Duracell battery. DH likes to bring out my 1987 school photo every now and again for a giggle. Seriously OP, if it's like Sun-In, step away!

herbygarden · 27/09/2023 21:28

I often use the Go Blonder shampoo and conditioner on my naturally blonde-ish hair and never had any issues but I've not tried the spray! I will avoid that after reading this thread!

sproutsandparsnips · 27/09/2023 22:14

I use the spray - dark blonde now naturally. It has definitely lightened it, it's a bit dry and slightly brassy but I like it.

I've only ever had highlights before so I don't know how it compares to bleaching, but my hair wasn't just dry it was damaged and breaking off pretty badly to the point that it looked patchy in places. Maybe because it works better with heat so I would use it before blow drying, the damage was compounded? If you look online loads of people say the same thing happened them. Take it gradually though and you can always just stop if you notice it getting damaged.

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 28/09/2023 03:27

Whatever you do, don't use it. My fantastic colorist says it's the worst and after I used it in lockdown we had to wait for it to grow out before she could highlight my hair again. I'm naturally medium/dark blonde.

SueDonnym · 28/09/2023 05:41

I use it but it would be maybe 2squirts every 3weeks. I have very thick hair though , cut shortish . Natural hair is dull blonde grey mix so this brightens to a goldier colour instead of mouse.

piscofrisco · 28/09/2023 06:50

Try glaze-the blonde one...

Goldencup · 28/09/2023 06:53

Lookforthejoy · 27/09/2023 20:03

I didn't go orange with this. It lightened my hair a bit bringing out some natural highlights, helped along with the summer sun. I'm a blondeish-brown.

This, I applied it to the ends mainly and just streaks. Helps if you can sit in the sun afterwards.

Wtfnowseptember · 28/09/2023 06:56

Following.

openallday · 28/09/2023 07:43

Oh no. It makes your hair go yellow

Horrible stuff

Doughnut100 · 28/09/2023 07:58

Haha there is definitely no consensus

The patch test on the underside of my hair is barely noticeable so I’m going to go for it tonight when I am free from this crying baby and shouting toddler. I’ll take before and after photos.

Not sure yet whether I’ll do like @Goldencup and go for the ends/streaks or just all over.

I found that straying it on my hands and running them through my hair, starting at the roots, gave a more natural sun streaked look.

Go gently and build up over time to avoid orange tones. Correct with purple shampoo if it's getting a bit brassy

If you want to intensify a few highlights just do those bits and blow dry.

Use a good conditioner as it does strip oils and can make hair dry and brittle

Doughnut100 · 28/09/2023 08:15

@SueDonnym how do you distribute 2 squirts through your hair?

@piscofrisco thanks I’m looking at glaze

OP posts:
SueDonnym · 28/09/2023 08:47

I don’t do all my hair -hold the bottle a foot away and squirt - it’s really just lightening the outer layer (as the sun would). Must wait to see the effect ie for a couple of weeks, before adding another light spray to avoid doing the same area too often causing roots. But I was yellowy blonde when young so it’s not a complete change.

zinfi · 28/09/2023 11:24

I've already warned but will attempt once more. If it's the spray activated by hairdryer I would steer clear. I've seen where the heat on the stuff has broken off the strands or partially melted so they're like straw.

You'd be better off with a box bleach than this spray. It's like sun in but worse.

zinfi · 28/09/2023 11:26

I've looked it up and it is the heat activated one. On your head be it OP! Grin

StoneColdAlibi · 28/09/2023 11:31

Meh I've used it between highlights and it worked fine to brighten it up, I do have naturally blonde hair though.
I'd probably use a toner as well to get rid of the yellowy tones.

Yup. If its the heat activated then stay away

Doughnut100 · 28/09/2023 13:23

I’ve done my before photos. I’ll make sure to take afters in the same light. I hate it when before and after photos aren’t properly comparable! Sorry they do look quite weird and spooky with my face covered 😂
