WFH outfits help

I LOVED working in the office and being able to wear snazzy outfits, think blouses and pencil skirts.

3 years later I'm 2 stone heavier, permanently WFH always on camera, but from the shoulders up.

My style, and my mojo is slowly dying as I sit in jogging bottoms and rotate through my warm jumpers or cooling t shirts.

I need help. What on earth can I wear to put a spring in my step, particularly as we move to autumn and my north facing office gets even colder.....

My style sounds completely different to yours so this is possibly no help at all - but at the start of the pandemic I vowed not to do joggers/Pj type bottoms for working from home. I knew I would definitely end up seriously depressed, and possibly very fat. I’m now back in work three days, but have kept to that on my WFH days. I’m also on camera a lot, and tend to dress as if I was eg meeting a friend for lunch, or going shopping. Right now it’s jeans and knits as we move into autumn, but nice jeans and knits!

Yesterday I wore a green Arket alpaca jumper with Levi’s baggy jeans, chunky wool socks, and Birkenstock clogs. I had a white tee under the jumper and gold hoops/chain. I always do hair/makeup. When it gets colder I have thermal base layers, and also a big fleecy blanket I put over my knees.

I guess my suggestion - in a very long winded way - is to buy nice versions of the things you currently wear. I know people say they find jeans uncomfy to sit in, but I think it depends on where the waistband sits. I have some really high waisted pairs I couldn’t do a whole day at a desk in, but most of my others are fine.

Following as I’m also stuck in the same rut and HATE it! (I hate wfh in general anyway tho!).

I was thinking maybe some brighter coloured sweatshirts/jumpers? And maybe like wide leg trousers instead of joggers/leggings 😬

Would it help to think beyond clothes? Is there space on a wall for some pictures or something else to be hung, a desk plant perhaps. Perhaps there are some other ideas that might be helpful? Something creative to do during lunch or quiet work-time if you have it. Just something to help you own the space you're working in, if you place it within view of people you're talking to then it might create some social chatter

I cannot force myself to wear jeans while WFH, it's just so uncomfy! I go for trousers that aren't joggers but are jersey and smart-looking (John lewis do a great wide legged version) with really 'nice' jumpers or tshirt/cardigans. I make sure every day I add a bit of zhuzh with a nice necklace or earrings, do my hair, wear a bit of makeup - if I add accessories and take care with the rest of my appearance I feel as nice as if I was wearing a 'proper' outfit

Ooh, I'll be following this thread! I recently bought some very wide length Max Mara trousers, with a hidden elasticated waste band. As the weather gets colder, I wear them with wooly socks and leg warmers. Looks smart but feels comfy.

I'm not much help in the trouser department (arf) because I always wear workout leggings while WFH so I can work out. But obvious solution: could you actually go back in the office once or twice a week? I do 2-3 days in and enjoy dressing up proper for it.

Other than that, as PP say there are a lot of wide-legged trousers with soft waistbands around at the moment that are reasonably "smart" and fall nicely. A shirt or blouse also always makes me feel crisp. I have Uniqlo heattech camisoles for wearing under shirts and also a flesh-coloured merino wool body that makes wearing lightweight shirts and blouses work for longer. If you must wear a jumper, have a shirt under it; the visible collar crispens things up a lot.

I second uniglo thermals to wear under tops. I have a collection of wide leg trousers and when it gets colder i wear jumper dresses, i have a couple and a lovely sleeveless one from Cos so i can wear a smart shirt underneath.

Do you have the option to go to th office? I go in 2 days and enjoy finding something nice to wear! I love bright or slogan sweatshirts, i will never own a pair of jogging bottoms. I wear jeans or wide leg trousers at home.

Lana12345 · 27/09/2023 08:28

I got lots of comfy dresses while WFH. It was actuially then I realised how much I love them. I was not confident enough to wear dresses to office so did at home and it felt great. And mostly just cheap comfy ones - easy to maintain and the outfit is complete. Some jumper ones too for the warmer weather. Light and flowy in summer is very cooling.

APurpleSquirrel · 27/09/2023 12:16

I wfh permanently now - I mostly wear leggings or tights with a dress (I love FatFace or TU); or jeans (skinny, bootcut or flared) with a top.
In winter snuggly boot slippers are great; jumper dresses over long sleeve tops; & a blanket on my legs if needed. If I'm off camera I'll wear fleece jumpers too.

Thanks all, unfortunately we moved away from hybrid once the office was closed (hybrid was the perfect option).

Interesting to note so many of you have avoided the jogging bottoms trap. I have nice jeans and wide legged trousers too.

I'll get those thermals suggested too, as agree that would allow shirts to be worn longer.

I like the idea of dressing how I meet friends for lunch. I'm known for dressing well, but you'd not think so looking at my wfh outfits.

I already have a pair of Bostons and Tamsins on order too, so will pair them with jeans.

I have got fat, so moving away from elastic waistbands should help me get some focus back.

Thanks All!
