Black boots or brown boots

I need some winter boots that will go with jeans / trousers or long dresses or skirts. Must be warm and comfy, flat, maybe a bit chunky but not overly so.

Black would normally be my go to, but I don’t like black with jeans, and as a lot of my clothes are autumn colours (greens, navy) would I be better getting brown boots?

Calf length or knee high?
Black or brown?
Chunky casual or a bit smarter?
Ideas please!! I’ve lost track of what’s trendy. Ta!

I prefer black but I do have a brown pair of slightly chunky somewhere between calf and and ankle boots.

Solvair seems to be recommended on here but they're How Much!

BarbieKew · 25/09/2023 12:33

I’m looking at my long dresses - khaki, navy, mainly muted greens and blues. Long denim skirt. Was defaulting to black (as always) but now wondering.

I’m not even gonna look at Solvair if they’re How Much!!

Budget is about £100.

The thing is all styles of boots are "in". I would say brown and you could start by looking at M and S for that budget. They do some great boots.

I think knee high suit me better (quite chunky calves but slimmer from knee up, and also have got some nice ankle boots in both black and tan brown). I’m looking at the Chelsea Doc Martens though, love the look of those, could just do with them being taller.

What about these?

With what you’ve listed, brown.

BarbieKew · 25/09/2023 13:16

Just done a boots audit:

Brown leather knee high, not comfy or chunky - these need replacing
Brown leather ankle, good boots
Tan suede ankle Chelsea
Black suede ankle Chelsea
Black suede lace up ankle
Black suede cowboy with chunky heel
Black very old knee high, high heel

So.. defo don’t need more ankle boots…

Mid calf or knee high? I think I’m going to need a pair in each colour. Ffs.

Oh and my trust grey ones from the middle of Lidl which are possibly the comfiest boots I own but are scruffy.

@BarbieKew , Solovair has an outlet site, and if you're lucky you can get slight seconds or discontinued ones for up to 50% off. You can also buy them 2nd hand on Vinted or Ebay. They're hardwearing, the styles are not trendy and the shoes and boots can be resoled. They're basically what DMs used to be

I have the burgundy rub-off ones because I don't like black shoes with jeans, but I have black dealer boots too.

I do love a good brown boot!

I have a red dress that i once wore black boots with and i felt like santa

LadyBird1973 · 27/09/2023 11:48

I'd probably just get brown knee high to wear under dresses, as I think brown fits more with the colours of your existing clothing.

I agree, I think brown is the way to go, now just need to find some I love!

If I was wearing, say, knee high brown boots and a navy dress or long denim skirt, would I just go bare legs? I feel like I’d need tights on!

The need for tights is the problem with skirts and dresses in winter generally. I hate them - they usually stick to my clothes and make skirts ride up. I'd probably try just little socks under the boots but it depends on how comfortable the inside material of the boots are.

I have a long wool tube skirt which I plan to wear with suede slouchy mid calf boots or my knee high boots, but I know the latter will need tights because the zip is set into elastic and isn't comfortable without them.
I think I probably need more expensive, anti static tights tbh.

How about these from Zalando?
