What self care/beauty treatments are non negotiable for you?

I’m a year post partum, finally back to work, need to start exercising again and not eating crap.
I have never been someone to really look after myself much in terms of beauty or self care - I am lazy with my curly hair (scrunch with serum and air dry, get a basic trim every 4 months but am letting my grey grow out to see what it looks like…), I wear make up occasionally. I don’t feel like I’m a pretty person so I don’t tend to feel like I’m worth making a fuss of. I bite my nails/skin around them (grim i know). I wear quite loose/relaxed clothing because I hate my body (lots of wide leg trousers, Lucy & Yak, big jumpers, midi skirts with baggy shirts) and I feel like clingy clothes make me feel worse about myself. My skin is ok, so I’m lucky I don’t need to wear much make up even if I do wear it.

I need to get myself into shape, I know that, but I need inspiration as to what self care beauty/health wise I should be doing daily/weekly/monthly. I don’t spend much money on myself and I’m worried it’s all going to be hugely expensive but I’m interested to see what you all do regularly for yourselves that you couldn’t do without?

Cut and colour every seven weeks
Light make-up daily: foundation, concealer, blusher, translucent powder, Mascara, lippy - takes all of 3/4 minutes.
Take it off with Clinique cleansing balm before bed.
Bit of Estee Lauder night cream
Floss

Good underwear.

That's it.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 23/09/2023 21:25

Decent hair products, paint own nails and colour own hair to save time and money, decent hairdresser for a cut.

Like you, I am not "pretty", but that doesn't mean I don't need or deserve to look good. I like my face and I like my body. They serve me well. Whether fat, or less fat, I buy and wear clothes that make me look good. I don't wear much makeup, but spend as much as I feel like on it. I will buy and liberally use any perfume that makes me feel good, regardless of price

If you have to start exercising, then whatever you start you will find difficult to keep up and fit in your life of work and parenthood. Even walking your 10K steps a day is enough.

Botox

toomanyleggings · 23/09/2023 22:06

Botox every 3/4 months, colour my hair every 8 weeks, I also have sewn in hair extensions, makeup ( not lots don’t have time), I have nails done regularly and I have a spray tan every week. Quite a lot really. I don’t think I look particularly glamorous just about make myself look passable really with all that. I’m not bad looking but slightly overweight so I overcompensate

Professional services - Botox, nails every 3 weeks, tinted eyebrows, hair colour.

Things I do myself - double cleanse + full skin routine every night, LED light therapy mask a few times a week, at home IPL, face masks, exfoliate (dry and wet), daily moisturise of body post shower, paint toes, gua sha massage, mascara daily (even with no other makeup it makes me feel put together!), nice perfume every day even if not going anywhere fancy.

Things I do that are more self care related - drink lots of water daily, try and leave the house for a walk or fresh air every day (doesn't happen sometimes if I'm unwell or having a particularly horrific workday!), ice my face when I'm feeling dull, scent my home (neom is a favourite), keep my sleep routine in check (pillow spray, silk eye masks and pillows etc), make sure my home is a place of relaxation and stress free, try to read more than I'm on my phone (so hard sometimes!). I try to eat well, by well I don't mean mega clean or healthy particularly but I mean good whole foods and treats if I want them. Try and get some dedicated self care time each weekend, if it's a bath and book or a pop out and coffee etc.

I don't think your self care needs to be linked to being "pretty" - even if you don't think of yourself as pretty, surely you think you deserve some self care! My list looks horribly long reading it over now and that's not even everything 😬

Botox twice a year
Highlights every two months
Hygienist four times a year
Wash my face morning and evening

Damonalbarnsbigtoe · 23/09/2023 23:24

Botox every three months
Nails every month.
Supplements- multivitamin, zinc, magnesium and cod liver oil.
Good cleanse of face twice daily.
Vitamin C serum, SPF 50 every day
Hylauronic acid and a good night moisturiser.
Decent foundation, I use a Chanel Lumiere one and a Nars concealer. Chanel bronzer, bit of blush. Decent black mascara.
Try to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables and nuts.
Allow treats but not excessive.
Very little alcohol. I drink green tea and water mainly.
Sleep a minimum of seven hours.
All this is self care for me and non negotiable.

Damonalbarnsbigtoe · 23/09/2023 23:25

Oh and I floss and use dental floss sticks. It makes a massive difference.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 23/09/2023 23:32

My only professional treatments are hair cut (no colour), and eyebrow waxing.

At home I paint my nails, usually twice a week, pedicure every Sunday. Tint my own brows and lashes. I like a long bath with a book/podcast a couple of times a week, and will usually shave then - but am less fussed about that in winter. Dermaplaning once a week. Good skincare, and wear makeup pretty much every day.

Which vitamin c serum do you use out of interest please?

ThreeBearsPorridge · 23/09/2023 23:37

Moisturiser and face cream and a serum in the morning. Night cream and hand cream at night. Foot cream when I can be bothered. File own nails and paint occasionally. Use a cleanser when I wear make up otherwise face wash . Wear make up about once a week ! I get my hair cut every six week or so but gave up colour in lockdown. Sometimes use a face mask. Take magnesium and evening primrose oil each night and a multi vit when I remember! I use sunscreen if I am outside most of the time. Hair mask when I notice hair is dry and use good quality shampoo and conditioner. That’s it.

FunnysInLaJardin · 23/09/2023 23:38

hair cut every 2 month, henna my hair every 2 months. Moroccan oil and straighten my curly hair every day.

Full make up every day, basic creams and face wash etc.

No surgical anything

I'm 52 and I pass I think.

And perfume every day

It costs a few pence a day probably. Very low maintenance

fiddleswiddle · 24/09/2023 03:41

I only get my hair done every 4 months now due to cost, but do my roots at home pretty much every 4 weeks. Good haircare products are pretty much my biggest splurge. I don't get nails done. I'm hoping to have eyebrows laminated next week because mine have always been pretty sparse

NailsHairNipsHeels · 24/09/2023 05:47
