I’m after a grey suit consisting of dress or skirt plus jacket…

…as I’ve been accused of sometimes looking too scruffy 🤣.

So a grey skirt or dress (or both?) plus jacket.

I’ve looked online but can only see trouser suits. And they’re too ‘fashionable’, I just want something plain that I can wear with funky blouses or plain blouses.

Below the knee preferred.

Black is a very harsh colour on me, plus I LOVE grey.

Either plain or a very slight pattern I think?

And I would rather it was from an actual shop so I can try it on.

Really, I want the equivalent of a plain men’s suit. Unobtrusive, able to be accessorised up or down.

No specific budget. If it meets all my requirements and is really comfy I’ll get a lot of wear out of it, and it’s all about cost per wear.

Thanks.

There's not much grey around this year but try Hobbs, they do some nice skirt suits and coordinates.

There's some in John Lewis, such as this, which has a matching blazer

You’ll have to forgive me for not understanding your point of view, at all. Someone has indicated that you look scruffy - which suggests that, however brilliant you may be in other areas of life, choosing smart clothes isn’t your forte.

But you’ve already conceived and designed the only outfit you’re prepared to wear? If you’re assailed with toothache would you arrive at the dentist’s and tell them what needed to be done? If you had a pain in your middle would you instruct the surgeon on procedures? Why have you decided that you’re the best person to create a suitable outfit?

Designers are usually trained. To manipulate fabric, to tap into the zeitgeist and to do their best (if they’re decent sorts) to tread the line between raw capitalist consumerism (constant newness) and enabling people to look their best in clothes. Most untrained consumers are not capable of putting together deliberately unfashionable garments in a way that makes them look well turned out and contemporary. The fact that someone has commented unfavourably on your outfits for a particular purpose suggests (assuming the comment maker isn’t an idiot) that this is not your skill set.

Go into a well established fashionable shop (online or in person) - with an open mind - and see what they have. Choose from what qualified professional designers are offering - not what unqualified you has invented.

I didn’t add a Grin to my post above, so …

Don’t know your preferred budgetary range so consider these merely wild card musing:

https://giulivaheritage.com/shop/fall-winter/cornelia-blazer-2/

https://moukimou.com/products/apuntob-heavy-plain-cotton-jacket-in-chocolate (You won’t like this but it’s cute with the culottes, and the shop has a very particular aesthetic.)

Both the MaxMara jackets below have matching trousers …

Places I assumed would carry a decent selection of suits, like Arket, or Studio Nicholson, actually don’t at the moment. Raey@ Matches almost certainly has something, but I link them so often people must think I have shares.

You could of course have a grey skirt suit tailored for you - but there’s a fine line between businesslike and dowdy …

@SurpriseSparDay I think op just wants a new grey suit. Your post is kind of weird.

Grey skirt, matching waist coat and jacket available

Oh that's nice. I couldn't find any grey suiting that was better than passable and most was terrible.

I think SurpriseSparDay is just saying it's a slightly odd leap to go from I look a bit scruffy to "and the only thing which will save me is a grey suit"

Particularly since with the exception of Itisyourturntowashthebath's suggestion so far all we've come up with is at best "do'able but a bit dull but at least the material is good" to those frankly hideous, fire hazard Next and Ted Baker suggestions.

Next has a business suit in grey;

It looks like the skirt only comes in black, but that would still be ok with a grey blazer.

That is exactly the kind of jacket I was thinking of.

I have that suit in Navy, with both the wide leg and straight leg trousers. For the price it's fine, I don't wear a suit to work every day but do sometimes need to wear one for visits. It's pretty unobtrusive, which is what I wanted.
