Can we stop commenting on peoples figures please ( unless they ask)

I see so many threads on here when people post a picture of an outfit and then other posters respond with comments like “You have a fab figure”. I know people are just being nice, but thats not what people are asking . It’s so reductive - we should be able to say “ooh I prefer the green dress” and leave it at that . It’s different if someone is asking for comments about their figure, but if its a general question about the clothes that are wearing , it’s so unnecessary.

Sorry I should have worded the title better ..Im not trying to police the thread..it was meant to be a suggestion rather than a demand!

I agree with you, it is really rude to pass uninvited comment on people's bodies.

NatashaDancing · 21/09/2023 22:01

I agree but you'd probably best get your flak jacket on.

Also it's possible for a dress to show off "your fab figure" and still be an awful dress.

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 21/09/2023 22:37

I want to put my name down for all the complements. Should you wish to say that someone has a fab figure, you can tell me. I'll be delighted.

clowniform · 21/09/2023 22:39

Yep and wtf is 'a fab figure' exactly? The dresses people post as suggestions for 'showing off your fab figure!' I find reliably unappealing, at best they're dull as ditchwater.

🤣🤣🤣

Zipps · 21/09/2023 23:41

Isn't that why they post? Fishing 🎣

MariePaperRoses · 22/09/2023 00:19

If the person who's figure is mentioned doesn't like any comment, they can tell the poster, can't they?

All this telling people what they can and cannot say to others is tedious.

singl · 22/09/2023 00:29

I don’t mean this in a horrible way, but I see most posters on here get a “great figure” comment regardless of what they look like. It’s just people uplifting people I suppose, it’s not really a bad thing. I think if someone’s sensitive about their figure, it’s not the best idea to post a photo of it here

shoeawsome · 22/09/2023 00:30

I think sometimes it does distract!
Lots of what is fashionable at the moment is oversized or high necked or loose fitting & when people say ' oh you have a great figure, that dress doesn't flatter your shape' or that's 'quite Amish' it sort of distracts from the question,
If people wanted to be wearing a body con dress I'm sure that's what they would have tried on & asked about.

FeigningConcern · 22/09/2023 00:37

Stop trying to police people's speech. "You can't say anything these days" has been trotted out for decades often unfairly, but it actually seems to have grown into itself these days! Nothing wrong with paying someone a compliment. That is not, and never has been rude. Commenting negatively (or sometimes even neutrally) on someone's appearance is rude and a horrible thing to do. Compliments can make someone's day

WandaWonder · 22/09/2023 00:41

Can we stop assuming everyone thinks the same? some people want compliments some people hate them, 'Can we stop...' comes across as patronising

Saverage · 22/09/2023 07:08

I was on a thread recently where I was told I had a great figure. I liked it. God knows no-one in real life has said it for a few years!

Oh this exactly.

I don't have a problem with posters saying "you have a fab figure" but it's the assumption that the only criteria for choosing what to wear is something to "show off your fab figure".

You're not being horrible because it's true. I think it's part of the assumption by some posters that "showing off your (fab or otherwise) figure" is the essential criteria for picking something to wear.

Sundaygirl01 · 22/09/2023 08:38

I agree with pp that all posters get, ‘You’ve got a fab figure/great legs/small waist’ whatever they look like.

I'd love to test that out

'You dont look like a bag of potatoes at all....'

MorrisZapp · 22/09/2023 08:42

I've fired out compliments in every direction all my life. I love it, others love receiving it, and I'll carry on ta.

Greengrassohla · 22/09/2023 08:42

Isn't that why they post? Fishing

yep, that’s what I always assume.

MintJulia · 22/09/2023 08:45

That seems a bit joyless. I'm 60 and am happy to receive complements too. For a single mum of my age, wfh, a simple complement brightens my day.

Spinet · 22/09/2023 08:45

As a fat person I fucking hate seeing this all over the place but if someone is unsure about, say, a close-fitting, low cut, or otherwise 'daring' style of outfit isn't it just a way of saying 'yes you have the figure for that dress to look good don't worry'?

Sometimes I see posts from people saying 'I'm size 10, 5'8" and my legs are too long can you find me a dress with a £300 budget' and I just think 'go to the shops love' but it's possible people really don't know they look great in anything because as women we are trained to hate ourselves aren't we.

No, we cannot stop commenting on other people's figures thanks. YOU can do what you like. I'll carry on offering compliments whenever I want to.
