It's for a work event-evening meal at a nice restaurant. I was hoping it would double up for xmas day too. It's black with red polka dots (in case it's not obvious from the pic)

I'm a bit lost with clothes at the moment. Mid 40s and lost all sense of how to dress. I dont know if its a bit frumpy. Would really appreciate honest opinions please.

I don’t love either. They’re fine for every day wear but neither screams “night out at a nice restaurant”. And I’m a similar age to you.

So what does "scream night out in a nice restaurant" to you? I eat out quite a lot in "nice restaurants" - a few people get all dressed up but OP's dress wouldn't look remotely wrong.

LlynTegid · 22/09/2023 08:17

I think the dress is better.

DresdenDoll · 22/09/2023 08:18

I like both, especially the dress, and I think it's fine with the boots.

The dress - add a high split (get this done professionally), and wear with high heels and add a belt and a great pair of earrings. If you can, I would wear hair up with a strong red lip.

Is that not an 80's vibe going on? I definitely wouldn't put a slit in that dress. A slit wouldn't suit the style of dress.

Everyone saying OP has a great figure and the dress doesn't show it off. Surely that's exactly what the dress is doing if everyone is saying what a good figure she has.

The dress is fine with the boots, agree with the poster who said thinner denier black tights.

Theblacksheepandme · 22/09/2023 08:26

I wouldn't wear a belt with that dress either, it takes away from the simplicity of the design.

Teddleshon · 22/09/2023 08:37

I prefer the dress and don’t think it’s frumpy at all, dress it up with hair, jewellery and heels. You look lovely.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/09/2023 08:59

I think the dress looks too big around the shoulders.

LeftTheWashingOut · 22/09/2023 10:04

I think that port dress is getting a bit of a hard time! Personally I don't think it looks frumpy, looks lovely on you and would suit the occasion. Perhaps the boots/tights combo could be better to be more "up to date" but I'm not sure what that is. Perhaps just ditch the tights? The jumpsuit also looks nice, but i think I prefer the dress. And what a bargain for £2.50. I never buy clothes for me on vinted as I never know what will fit, but perhaps I'll look again

Everyonesliverlovesparvo · 22/09/2023 11:01

What even does frumpy mean ?
And the BS about it hiding her ‘gorgeous figure and showing it off’. So people who aren’t as slim should hide away in a tent ? Surely the whole squeezing everything into a tight short dress is equally dated…

Lentilweaver · 22/09/2023 11:10

I quite like it. Definitely not frumpy. Maybe a bit conservative. But perfectly fine for a work dinner with boots.
Thr jumpsuit is a bit loose on you.

wannabesilverfox · 22/09/2023 11:15

The dress is lovely. Much cooler than the jumpsuit. You could just
ditch the tights then the shoes would look fine. Or chunky brogues would be great.

I thought the jumpsuit looked a bit loose too.

Thanks everyone.

I do struggle with sizing as I've put weight on around my mid area but I'm very petite on top, I've got very narrow shoulders so dresses are tricky.

I really don't like wearing tight/short stuff anymore. I'd rather be comfortable and this is a group of very sensible (boring) professionals.

Your dress is fine. It's not too big. Your boots are ok too. I agree with whoever said thinner black tights with those boots. I'd wear it wth flat boots and thicker tights.

(As for no tights, just my opinion but I think bare legs and boots look odd. If it's cold enough for boots, bare legs look odd)

I was thinking of putting a slit in the skirt to de frump it a bit.

Nooo the skirt is perfect

Aline, empire like works well for this. Although having seen the photo your waist looks fine, you’re probably used to being skinny.

EasternStandard · 22/09/2023 16:10

I prefer the dress

The jumpsuit doesn’t work well, might be the cut

Ididivfama · 22/09/2023 16:11

Dress is definitely nicer but not sure about tights ans shoes

etonmess89 · 22/09/2023 16:23

It's just a dress. Not a very exciting or interesting one and I agree it looks like office wear. It's pretty bland, sorry OP. The main question is how you feel in it though - are you wanting to go out feeling like you've dressed up a bit and feel a bit special? If so then personally I think there is a nicer dress out there for you.

Springforward1 · 06/11/2023 00:17

You could wear anything and look good and although you suit this dress,I just don't like anything about it. It could be the photo but I think it looks old, faded and worn out 🤷‍♀️

Of course this is just my opinion. The dress possibly looks far better in reality. The majority of PPs like it and its all about taste & what makes you feel good. You did ask for honesty so I went with my first thoughts. We can't all have the same opinions 👍

sandyhappypeople · 06/11/2023 00:41

I think a dress would be more flattering for your figure as the jumpsuit does show your (tiny) tummy a bit more, which you don't even notice in the dress, the navy looks nice on you though.

A wrap dress would look nice on you, apricot have a really nice range, I'm early 40's and apricot is often my go to, as the materials are really nice compares to some other shops and they styles are very flattering, something like this maybe?

Great suggestion. I had a look at Apricot & there are some really lovely dresses at very reasonable prices 😁

IAmtheVampiresWife · 06/11/2023 04:09

I agree with whoever said that both of them look too big on you - the dress across the shoulders and the jumpsuit around the middle . It looks like the body is too long for you. I have to strongly disagree with the person saying the jumpsuit shows your tummy off🙄
