It's for a work event-evening meal at a nice restaurant. I was hoping it would double up for xmas day too. It's black with red polka dots (in case it's not obvious from the pic)

I'm a bit lost with clothes at the moment. Mid 40s and lost all sense of how to dress. I dont know if its a bit frumpy. Would really appreciate honest opinions please.

You can style the jumpsuit with a chain belt etc… more easily than the dress. So it’s more versatile

CharlotteBog · 21/09/2023 19:04

They are both ok. Not frumpy as such, more not very dressy or special.
I think you can do better OP

BHRK · 21/09/2023 20:39

I really like the dress but agree bare legs and heels would be nicer. It looks good on you, keep it

NatashaDancing · 21/09/2023 20:47

The dress is a day dress. It's an ok but not the most exciting day dress but it's perfectly fine for a work event evening meal in a nice restaurant. I wouldn't wear heels with a dress like that. I think your boots are ok but getting into winter I'd wear flat lace up ankle boots.

I don't like the jumpsuit at all.

Oh goodness no.

I try to avoid saying "dated" as it's overused and generally meaningless but no, it's a work event in a smart restaurant. Bare legs and heels will look desperately trying to gussy up an ok day dress into something it isn't. Boots are a much better look.

breadwidow · 21/09/2023 21:39

I like both but think the dress looks slightly better on you but that maybe because you are wearing shoes in the picture. And thinking of the shoes I'm gonna disagree with the other posters too - the boots look fab. I love boots and dresses - more more edgy and modern. I never wear heals myself anymore - life's too short to make your feet that uncomfortable- and ankle boots have become a go to look. If it's warm enough I'd ditch the tights though, bit of bear ankle would add to edginess

Mirabai · 21/09/2023 21:43

You’ve got a really good figure and both are frumpsville. The dress is dowdy and the jumpsuit swamps you.

The “rules” haven’t changed - good fit, nice colours.

Sidebeforeself · 21/09/2023 21:48

The dress is very dull . I cant open the picture on the jumpsuit for some reason. I just think you should feel great in something for a night out..do you feel great in either?

Stepbystepfan · 21/09/2023 22:03

StoneTheCrone · 21/09/2023 18:58

You have a great figure and I think neither outfit does you justice.

It would be worth spending a bit more for good cut, colour and finish.

I completely agree. Sorry but the dress is frumpy. I am 47 and wouldn’t wear either. You have a great body! You can pull off more fashionable outfits.

MistyBay · 21/09/2023 22:03

I really like it. I think it may be a size too large though. I like clothes like this, although you have to have the right hair!!

if you have long hair that you can pile up and put some nice earrings with it it’ll look great. Let that do the talking. However, I don’t think its snappy enough to go with short hair.

so it’s all down to your hair IMO

MistyBay · 21/09/2023 22:04

I do not like the jumpsuit though.

Blingstar · 21/09/2023 22:08

Really like the dress, think you look fab in it.

SpareHeirOverThere · 21/09/2023 22:21

The dress is way too Little House on the Prairie for someone with your brilliant figure. The jumpsuit is better.

That said, I'm seeing a lot of women wearing Amishcore, and you'd look great in anything. If you like it, go for it.

clowniform · 21/09/2023 22:25

Dress great for work meal and much more current than the fitted tailored numbers people usually seem to mean by 'a dress to show off your figure'. I'd go with bare legs and chunky heeled brogues or loafers, something contrasty for edge. Ditch the kitten heels for sure.

The jumpsuit neckline would be too low for work for me but with EXTRA accessories and bold makeup would be nice for Christmas.

FallGall · 21/09/2023 22:30

Personally I think the dress is really frumpy, but def a mumnset dress :) great for the office but not a night out.

I like the jumpsuit but does look slightly big on you.

You have an amazing figure, think anything would look good on you!!

MrsNK28 · 21/09/2023 22:56

The jumpsuit better. The dress is awful. Giving you a nun vibe

AbsoluteYawns · 21/09/2023 22:59

Both outfits look lovely on you OP!

I've had another look at it. I like it too. It's for a works dinner in a restaurant. It's's fine for that. The way some of the posts are going on it's as if OP was going to wear it to a black tie ball.

I'd love to see alternative suggestions from the "ew, frumpy" lot.

YellowMonday · 21/09/2023 23:08

The dress - add a high split (get this done professionally), and wear with high heels and add a belt and a great pair of earrings. If you can, I would wear hair up with a strong red lip.

Shoemadlady · 21/09/2023 23:09

The dress is lovely but the boots aren't right. X

Miniminiminimalist · 21/09/2023 17:52

I like it, but if I had your lovely figure I'd wear something that showed it off more tbh!

But it is nice and you look nice in it

This.

Elvisrockstar · 22/09/2023 04:23

I don’t love either. They’re fine for every day wear but neither screams “night out at a nice restaurant”. And I’m a similar age to you.

Theblacksheepandme · 22/09/2023 08:01

I don't actually think the boots you are wearing is the problem. I do think that the tights look very dark in the photo. Maybe go for a lower denier black tights, maybe 30.

No absolutely not. Ok lipstick, earrings and hair up fine but the other suggestions, no.

So agree with all of this.

I really like the classic, vintage vibe of the dress.
