Toenail detached on one side

I'm not if style & beauty is the best board for this question but probably busier than general health.

My toenail has completely detached from my toe, apart from down one side, so it's a flap. I can't pull it off as scared it'll be painful and bleed alot, can't really cut it either.
Can't get an appointment with the podiatrist until Nov.
Is there a chance it will come loose on the attached bit so it'll naturally fall off? I've currently got a plaster on it as it's like to get caught.

Grit your teeth and see if it will come loose. It probably won’t hurt. Mine was similar & it eventually did but it came loose over months and months (long distance running…)

if not, keep the plaster on and wait for the podiatrist

You might have to snip away at it. It’s probably fungal. Otherwise you risk it tearing when you aren’t aware of it happening. I’d gently lift and snip. When it’s wet it will flap more and eventually lift up.

I get nail separation on my fingers sometimes. Is it that? If so, it kind of grows back and then reappears at random times.

I've worked in a GP surgery before and they were always treating fungal nail infections and removing fungal toenails in minor surgery. I'd give them a call as it might need treating.

I know you say you can't cut it, but have you tried nail clippers to remove as much 'flapiness' as you can? Then quick bathe in warm salted water. Dry and put a plaster on.

Mine was like this and gradually came looser until it was just attached at one side only at the edge. I did pull it off then and it briefly hurt! It took about a month to come off- I had a lot of re-growth by this stage so I ended up with half a toe nail.

Thanks all.
I think I will have to cut it at some point but will need to build up to it! 😄

Will soak first and then clip as close as possible I think, maybe at the weekend.

I had this . I had a bath, then clipped it . It didn't hurt at all. The skin underneath had healed so just felt a bit tender. It's now growing back

DobbyTheHouseElk · 21/09/2023 17:26

Your body will deal with it if not. Toenails are so interesting the way they regenerate.

Whataretheodds · 21/09/2023 17:36

Do not tear it! Do snip to remove any flappy bits.
Are there no other podiatrists?

notagain2020 · 21/09/2023 17:51

Try a different podiatrist. They are private so someone must be able to see you before November somewhere within a reasonable distance.

notagain2020 · 21/09/2023 17:52

Or maybe offer to pay slightly extra for an 'after hours' emergency appointment. Did the receptionist know how bad it was?

MonikerBing · 22/09/2023 05:44

I had to put a plaster over mine as it got so loose it was catching on things. It loosened on its own and after about 4 weeks was only attached by a little bit (I assume the new nail growing was pushing it out) so I pulled it off. It hurt for a few seconds and bled but within a couple of days was fine and is now growing. It's fine though - i didn't think about a podiatrist. Before all of this there was a massive bruise under it so I assume I just banged it somewhere (am very clumsy) - didn't spot any of it because it was painted though.

Thanks all.

I managed to clip it off yesterday, a tiny bit of bleeding but now seems fine and doesn't hurt at all
