Tights and trainers?

I’ve just moved back recently from a hot country and this is my first autumn/ winter back home. Since I left our work dress code has become much more casual, and with lots more time on my feet I’m enjoying being to be able wear trainers at work. Now that it’s getting colder, I’m wondering can I wear them with tights with the same knee length/ midi skirts and dresses they were okay with in summer or do I need to wear in some less comfortable brogues or boots? (I still intend to wear them with trousers when I can)

I think I would go for a thermal later on your torso before tights with trainers, but then again I am not the most fashionable

BaruFisher · 17/09/2023 14:57

Thanks @byronicheroine I’m not either which is why I’ve had to ask on here. My inclination says no, but then skirts with trainers were a no-no not so long ago so I wondered if I could get away with taking it a step further with tights!

Never wear tights with trainers. Makes you look like an old lady.
Stayed bare legged for as long as possible by adding a vest to stay warm.

Thick soled ankle boots/ or knee boots will be just as comfy and warm with skirts or dresses and look a million times better when it's actually winter

megletthesecond · 17/09/2023 14:59

A chunky wool tight would work with the right trainers.
But office-y flesh toned tights and trainers would look very wrong.

HighFiveOoooooIFeelSoAlive · 17/09/2023 14:59

Obviously you can and should wear exactly what you want and feel comfortable in etc etc, but I don't like trainers and tights together. White trainers and black tights just look off to me. Maybe black trainers would be OK.

Or I'd keep the trainers and wear jeans.

Clicheinaqashqai · 17/09/2023 15:02

I wear cropped leggings under midi dresses in winter, so they can't be seen but I'm relatively toasty

clowniform · 17/09/2023 15:07

It's absolutely fine and moderately fashionable in fact (peaked a few seasons ago but still v. common).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/09/2023 15:07

Makes you look like an old lady
And what's wrong with old ladies?

I quite like black fishnets with black trainers and a midi skirt.

BaruFisher · 17/09/2023 15:14

Some great alternatives here- thanks everyone- I was hoping to get away another month before going into boots but it looks like I may have to bite the bullet. I like the idea of fishnets and trainers too but don’t think they’ll help with the heat factor- I go to work by public transport so keeping warm and dry is always a priority!

The you and cool waitresses in my local wine bar wear black opaques with Vans and I think they look fine. OTOH they'd look good in most things!

WeightoftheWorld · 17/09/2023 15:21

Hahaha laughing at old lady comment. I've always worn tights with trainers in winter, from been a teen onwards and so have many of my friends. I'm late 20s now and still do, definitely not an old lady, I still sometimes get given a child ticket on the bus.

Not at all saying this is fashionable but frankly I wouldnt care about that, I wear what I like and what is comfortable.

caramond · 17/09/2023 15:23

I've worn tights and trainers for years and continue to do so. I don't really wear white trainers though so there's less contrast anyway - darker or colourful trainers with black or dark colour (like bottle green or burgundy) opaque tights.

MonikerBing · 17/09/2023 15:30

I think black trainers and black tights would look ok with a long or a very short skirt/dress. not with a knee length skirt or dress though.

(I'm an old lady though, so what do I know?)

I think ankle boots and tights only look ok with very long or very short skirts too.

the other alternative OP is loafers?

It's hard to know what to wear on your legs in the Autumn though - bare legs seem too summery and it seems too early to be wearing tights in September. I play it safe with trousers most of the time.

BaruFisher · 17/09/2023 16:38

Yes autumn is tough! Warm on top or trousers I think will be the way to go. Thanks all.

Opaque tights and coloured trainers look fine. Either nude tights or white trainers wouldn’t.

purpleme12 · 17/09/2023 17:31

Well I wear trainers with tights 🤣
And yes they're short dresses.
I don't really care if other people don't approve lol

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/09/2023 17:54

Nude tights would be fine imo, so long as they're properly nude on you.

BaruFisher · 17/09/2023 18:22

Unfortunately I can’t get nude tights that match my skin tone so I had been thinking black opaques with darker trainers. I do have a pair of black patent brogues which might to the trick with the shorter lengths if the trainers don’t cut it.
