Skims - Worth the hype?

Please help! I've been incredibly disorganised, and I'm a bridesmaid in two weeks. I have the dress but that's it... I'm desperate for some shape wear to hide my c section and generally smooth me out. I've been looking at Skims. Are they actually worth the hype, or are they just another celeb endorsed fad?

If the answers, yes how has everyone found the sizing? I'm anywhere between a 10-14 but generally a size 12 and am very pear shaped, so often find shape wear either up my bum or making my chunky hips stand out.

Finally, where is the best place to buy them? I can only find them in Net a Porter, Selfridges, and their own website, all of which have high postage and terrible customer service reviews.

If you've found them crap and have better suggestions, I'm all ears as I'm in a bit of a muddle!

Go for Spanx

BeverlyBrook · 17/09/2023 03:53

What style is the dress? Another vote for spanx

User1706 · 17/09/2023 09:35

Thank you both for your replies. The dress is like a fitted prom dress, so any leg chub will already be hidden and is not an issue. It's the top I'm worried about the material has zero give and is fitted, a body suit would be perfect as I get hideously bloated during the month however due the dress having cut outs this won't be an option so I was looking at high waist contouring briefs.

I wore thinsticts at my wedding though and they were brilliant (and much easier to find) so I'll have a look!

I haven’t had shapewear from them - just regular underwear - which was great but word of warning if you do go for Skims don’t order direct from them as my order took ages to turn up, so you might not get it before the wedding.

Skims are far superior to SPANX who’s quality isn’t what it used to be.

I buy from Harrods. Skims is available on the Harrods website too and they have a sizing chart to help you with sizing.

Apparently Primark do a dupe so maybe try that first.

Absolutely not worth the hype, Amazon so great shapewear!

User1706 · 18/09/2023 08:27

Oooh I'm all mixed now! I've looked on spanx and they don't seem to do what I want (which seems odd) as I think it's fairly simple. Just a high waisted brief not thong no thighs in the thinstincts material.

Separate to this why on earth is good shareware so bloody hard to find 😬

I bought emergency shapewear from Primark and it's actually really decent.

It's not the kind of clothes that gets a lot of wear really is it so I think the cheap stuff can be just as effective as the premium brands.

Girlintheframe · 18/09/2023 08:44

I've never tried skims and I don't rate spanx. Have much support do you need? They all range from full to light. I used to wear maidenform which I felt really sucked everything in. Debenhams/John Lewis sell a large range.

User1706 · 18/09/2023 20:29

I don't have a primark close by, so I won't be able to grab anything from there in time. That is helpful to know though. I'm only looking at light/medium firmness really I'd ideally like something to make my section scar a little less prominent and hopefully pull in any additional bloating. (Side note as I know this sounds ridiculous and unrealistic, but in my hormonal cycle I have a few days where overnight I get ridiculously bloated. I'm talking up to 10lb, and then I pee it all out a few days later. I'm worried this will happen on the wedding day as it's really noticeable and it makes me miserable.)

I've have a look at maidenhead, thank you!

M&S shapewear is the bomb, honestly. Have you got one near you? If so then you could take your dress and try it on with one of their slips. Far better than Spanx although I have no experience of Skims.
